“Exceptional. . . . Intelligent, surprising, sexy, funny, compassionate and wise.”—Washington PostFrom #1 New York Times bestselling author Elizabeth George, a stunning mystery featuring Detective Inspector Thomas Lynley that explores the perfect crime. After the senseless murder of his pregnant wife, Detective Superintendent Thomas Lynley hands in his badge and walks out of Scotland Yard. He goes … Superintendent Thomas Lynley hands in his badge and walks out of Scotland Yard. He goes home to Cornwall. The only way he can deal with his painful memories is to hike the trails over the cliffs of the Cornish coast. There, on the forty-third day of his walk, he finds the lifeless body of a young man, dead from a fall.
Thus begins a quest to unmask a clever and ruthless murderer. But this time, Lynley’s not in charge. He’s a witness—and possibly even a suspect. The vastly understaffed local copper in charge of the investigation soon figures out that Lynley can help. So can his former associate Barbara Havers, whom Scotland Yard sends to Cornwall, ostensibly to assist in the investigation, but unofficially to keep an eye on Lynley and maybe lure him back to his job.

A great mystery by George! This is the book where Inspector Lynley and his great DS Haversack get back together to solve a crime (after a personal tragedy totally almost destroys Lynley’s life). Can be read without reading the other books that came before it).
I love Elizabeth George and her characters Lynley and Havers. This book focuses more on Lynley and the turn his life has taken. There is still a good murder mystery but definitely more a step in the character development of the series. LOVE this series so a must-read if you do too.
following Insp Lynley to the end and enjoying them all except Helen dying. this book was page turning, keep you guessing to the end. lots of characters to follow and keep straight with wonderful descriptions of the northern coast.
Really not a great book. It is a book only to be read if you are an Inspector Lynley fan and simply must read everybook. It is unnecessarily long, and while very good at conveying Lynley’s deep pain, is simply not very entertaining nor is the resolution satisfactory.
This author is one of the best at development of characters.
The characters are interesting and not one dimensional, and the mystery good, but not overblown.
Perhaps too much “Woe is me” for Lindley while Havers carries the freight.
You just can’t miss with Elizabeth George…all her books are wonderful.
A little bit predictable, but that is expected in such a long running series. Otherwise, enjoyed the story with some interesting new characters.
I really enjoy Elizabeth George. I would buy more of her books, but $11.99 for an e-book is out of my budget.
Needs an ending. I know it’s probably part of a series, but still each story should have a little bit of closure. I think that is lacking.
As in all of her books, the characters are always the same. In a previous book the wife of one of the main characters has been murdered. This book covers his deveistation and actions after losing his wife and unborn child. You feel like you know the characters and it is interesting to read about their lives.
Currently reading and have not read an Inspector Lynley before. This is a complex mystery and lots of secrets. I am looking forward to the end.
This book is another in the series about Inspector Linley and Barbara Havers of New Scotland Yard. Funny in parts, full of plot twists, and a solution to the mystery near the end of the book. I really like a book that I can’t solve the mystery to.
She is always in Top form. This book of many twists is no exception.
Elizabeth George has always been one of my all time favorites but this one tops them all! Her ability to describe the process of losing a loved one and then the months of pain and emotions afterward is so realistic, authentic and to the heart of the matter! Not just believable but accurate. this is a great one!
Wonderful English police mystery. Smart and well paced with wonderful characters.
I liked this book, but, it was difficult for me to sometimes remember who was who.
I love all of the Inspector Lynley books! This one is wonderful.
I love the Inspector Lynley books and have read most of them. I really enjoyed the characters and the author’s dry humor in this particular book but found the plotting more complicated than usual and sometimes a bit challenging to follow. However, It definitely filled in some gaps in Lynley’s history and explained a lot about his character …
