“Exceptional. . . . Intelligent, surprising, sexy, funny, compassionate and wise.”—Washington PostFrom #1 New York Times bestselling author Elizabeth George, a stunning mystery featuring Detective Inspector Thomas Lynley that explores the perfect crime. After the senseless murder of his pregnant wife, Detective Superintendent Thomas Lynley hands in his badge and walks out of Scotland Yard. He goes … Superintendent Thomas Lynley hands in his badge and walks out of Scotland Yard. He goes home to Cornwall. The only way he can deal with his painful memories is to hike the trails over the cliffs of the Cornish coast. There, on the forty-third day of his walk, he finds the lifeless body of a young man, dead from a fall.
Thus begins a quest to unmask a clever and ruthless murderer. But this time, Lynley’s not in charge. He’s a witness—and possibly even a suspect. The vastly understaffed local copper in charge of the investigation soon figures out that Lynley can help. So can his former associate Barbara Havers, whom Scotland Yard sends to Cornwall, ostensibly to assist in the investigation, but unofficially to keep an eye on Lynley and maybe lure him back to his job.

All this author’s books are great. Each book follows in succession so that you get to know the characters well as they appear in each book. The books are a complete story by itself. This book was tense, and caused me to read on and on well past my bedtime.
Not my favority DS Thomas Lynley book but interesting. Been following Lynley and Havers for many years and the complex plots seldom disappoint.
Everything by George is realistic, and hard to put down. Her characters are so true. And, a good mystery too.
This is a little more involved and complicated than the other books that I’ve read in this seri s. Characters are well developed. Kept me guessing to the end. I loved it.
I love all her books
Not sure I recommend it! The killer escaped.
I like the detective Linley series because with each book the characters are more developed and you feel you are getting to really know them.
Not up to Ms. George’s usual standard. I thought there was too much quirkly sex and the “mystery” was easy to determine by the middle of the book.
Maybe a standalone novel would have been a good idea – NOT with the main hero Inspector Lynley. Okay, he was having a nervous breakdown over the death of his wife. But it went on and on and on and on. I gave up half way through.
The novels by Elizabeth George keep you on the edge of your seat. Page turning, and breathless.
