Two years ago, Jason and Kate Ryker were brought together by grief and bound to one another by love. Now married, they’re confronting their fears together.
But heartbreak finds them again, and the ties that bind Kate and Ryke are tested as she struggles against fear and sadness. As a grief counselor, Kate understands all too well the pain of her clients. And while her husband’s career as an NHL … an NHL forward is at an all-time high, he’s coping with the frustration of feeling powerless as his wife’s hopes slip away.
Kate’s unexpected journey sheds light on the fear that imprisons her, and reveals that only she can set herself free.

RYKE IS MINE
If you haven’t read BOUND yet, read it first….CAPTIVE is book two of Brenda Rothert’s Fire On Ice Series and a continuation of Ryke’s and Kate’s love story….and it’s one of the hardest books I’ve ever read….The Intensity of the subject matter was almost unbearable at times….This couple is so in love, you can almost feel their inability to breathe when they are near the other…..and even more when they can’t be…
So, Kate discovers she’s pregnant, again…..And while she’s not happy about it, Ryke and Kate have been assured she can carry a healthy baby, so she lets her guard down, and they are beyond excited….But, Kate miscarries…and with his travel for games and her constant fears, their relationship after the fallout is not only rocky…it’s heartbreaking to watch…
Ryke is such a good man and an even better husband…(which makes him even hotter)…He is so in love with Kate, you can feel it…He spends most of his life just trying to make Kate happy…..adjust to her mood swings…go with the flow…It’s not that Kate doesn’t love Ryke, just as much, and she wants to be happy…but Kate has lost two babies, and she’s buried herself so deeply in grief, it’s crippled her, and she just doesn’t think it’s in the cards for her…and she’s definitely not going through this pain again….so, Kate decides she wants a tubal ligation, and Ryke agrees…..But, apparently, Ryke and Kate can’t breathe the same air without her getting pregnant… because when she goes for a consult with the doctor, she discovers she’s pregnant…again…..This book…just watching Kate locked inside her grief is heartbreaking….
If I say anymore, I’ll be spoiling it for someone else…but this book is good…intense, but good…and if you don’t fall in love with Ryke, you’re dead..

Captive by Brenda Rothert was book two in the Fire on Ice series. It was also the continuation of Jason Ryker (Ryke) and Kate Camden’s story from Bound, book one, and must be read in order. I read it as part of the boxed set, The Complete Fire and Ice series but am reviewing it separately as well.
Ryke was still a gorgeous, alpha NHL star and Kate was a grief counselor. They had been married about two years as the book began. Rothert took us through an emotional time period in Ryke and Kate’s life where they were working on starting a family. No spoilers so no elaboration, but Kate’s previous loss was an obstacle for her and a big part of this book.
It had been awhile (nine months) since I had read Bound, so I was going in fairly blind until I could remember the details of their story. Once I got into it, I quickly remembered that I loved Ryke, but wasn’t a huge fan of Kate. This second go around wasn’t much different; however, I understood that Rothert may have depicted Kate’s attitude, fears and grief realistically. I still wasn’t a fan, but it did put it into perspective.
All in all, it was well written and took us full circle. I’m looking forward to leaving Ryke and Kate and reading other stories involving some of Ryke’s team mates. Luke is up next in Edge.
This was an emotionally devastating, moving and poignant story. This was personal for me, I went through some things that Kate went though and I felt her pain, but at some point I felt like she needed to let the past go, and stop being so whiny about everything. I know that sounds mean, but you can only move forward. And Ryke he was loving, devoted, understanding, and just an all-around amazing man. They went through a lot, but they unconditional love between them was simply beautiful. It was hard to see what they went through but heartwarming at the same time. I enjoyed this story.
