“This is the most intense book I have ever read. From the sex to the battles and the strong emotions, this book [is] one thrilling read. I would not call this a romance at all, so not soft and fluffy here. That would have ruined the book. I cried through a lot of this book and the ending!! WOW!”“This was phenomenal! I could hardly stand to put the book down to eat or work or sleep. I have a … or sleep. I have a weakness for a male character that is not afraid to explore his sexuality. I read this too fast. Can’t wait to start the next one.”
“I could not put this book down. It was extremely well written. The characters are complex and well developed, pulling you in. Jex is able to portray the emotions and emotional growth of her characters beautifully.”
“Oh my. This book blew me away. It’s sexy, violent, passionate, and utterly captivating. I loved, loved, loved the relationship and dynamic between Tarrick and Matthew. The world-building was done perfectly, with enough details to make it understandable but not so much we drown in descriptions. The mystery of who and what Matthew is is slowly being unraveled and done really well. Cannot wait to read the next book!”
“Jex Lane is on par with the likes of Laurell K. Hamilton, Anne Rice, Charlaine Harris, and Tanya Huff. And let me say that I really enjoy Lane’s take on vampirism and the rules that govern them in her universe. I cannot wait to see what is in store for Matthew, and I kind of wouldn’t mind meeting him in a dark alley.”
Matthew Callahan has spent seven years struggling against the insatiable hunger for blood consuming him. Unable to stop the vampire inside from preying on humans, he keeps himself confined to a lonely existence.
Everything changes the night he is lured into a trap and taken prisoner by High Lord General Tarrick—a seductive incubus who feeds off sexual energy. Forced into the middle of a war between vampires and incubi, Matthew is used as a weapon against his own kind. Although he’s desperate for freedom, he is unable to deny the burning desire drawing him to the incubus general he now calls Master.

Sexy with elaborate worldbuilding, Jex’s book has all kinds of creatures including vampires and a red-hot incubus! Definitely give this one a try…
Emotional. Tough reading, dark, violent, and amazing. Top notch world-building, and a bisexual character acting like a real bisexual character. No bisexual stereotypes here! This is not an easy read, but the powerful prose and deeply charming characters and original world-building roped me in.
Hands down, Jex Lane has built a world equal to the greatest authors of the paranormal genre. This series came as a referral from a friend who pushed me to read. Thankfully, I listened because I was so clearly missing out. This entire series is full of twists and turns that Jex so artfully lays out, I just flat don’t see them coming – the Beautiful Monsters series is so great and so original and so consuming, I recommend you stop what you are reading and give this series a try whether you’re a paranormal reader or not.
Miscellaneous thoughts:
1) I’m not into horror being inside my paranormal, my friend is. Jex has created a story so complex, its absorbing. I’m satisfied, the friend is satisfied, which says a lot to Jex’s storytelling ability.
1.5) Jex has taken the time to understand all the different aspects involved in the paranormal world. I’ve read lots of old school paranormal authors, and Jex is teaching me things I’ve never learned before.
2) The story unfolds from the main character’s life experience. Jex does this so well, you live the life of discovery with Matthew. Nothing is rushed, nothing feels repetitive. I found myself hurting where I was supposed to hurt, happy when things went well and just rooting for the main character’s well being.
3) Possible spoiler: The king is not my favorite.
4) I want to turn into a vampire and go be Matthew’s friend.
5) One POV, third person.
6) The writing improves and improves and improves.
7) I’d love to live in this author’s head for a while. This is an artfully told and well-thought-out story, Jex has a fan for life. Someone needs to help me meet her so I can gush and gush.
Bold and different. Must read!
Fresh new series, full of twists, turns, and amazing characters! Absolutely love this series. I’ve read the books a few times now!
Amazing! Jex has created a vilolent and lust filled world of Vampires and Incubi and I can’t get enough!! I’m so torn between loving or hating Tarrick but like Matthew, I will keep going back for more. Can’t wait for the next book!
This is one of my favorite books. The whole series is amazing. Jex is the first author I’ve followed on social media because I DID NOT want to miss any new releases from her. Highly recommend this series!
Great story highly recommended
I don’t normally read about incubi and vampires (except Tracy Cooper-Posey) but from the first page of the first chapter I was drawn into Jex Lane’s world. There is love in this book but it is not a romance and certainly no HEA, but it’s so good that doesn’t matter – getting to the next book does!
I loved this book and immediately bought the next two books in the series and read them. I am now not so patiently waiting for the 4th book. This series is full of twists, dark pain, happiness and sadness. Great read.
There is a lot to say about this series, but if you’re into books that pull you in, leave you laughing, crying, gasping, and with one hell of a book hangover, pick it up. Keep in mind this is an M/M, M/F book so if that’s not your thing you are aware now.
Sweet paranormal romance set in the swamps of Louisiana. Easy read.
I couldn’t put this book down. The characters are amazing and the story is awesome. Can’t wait to read the next book.
I loved this book and with every page it just leaves you wanting more and more and more. Mathew is the main character who is a vampire that is caught and held captive by an Incubus General named Tarrick. There is a war between vampires and incubi that has been going on for 1,000 years or so and Mathew gets caught up in it. The world building and characters are phenomenal and when you finish this one you are gonna go buy book 2 straight away! The only thing is if you are wanting a straight forward romance this is not the book for you. While there is plenty of sexy times in the story this is the beginning of Mathews’ journey and there is no falling in love and living happily ever after. That aside I highly recommend this book for vampire lovers and/or those that love a well written fantasy novel.
Wonderfully captivating. I couldn’t stop wanting to read it and every chance I got I would read a few more pages.
One of the best novels I’ve found with bisexual characters, good sex scenes, and a glorious plot!
Could not put it down.
I had tried to start this once before (apparently? I don’t remember it at all, but it was bookmarked at page 50ish in Aldiko) but couldn’t get into it. I picked it up again this summer and it had me *crying* by page 30. I ended up finishing the entire three (current) books in the series in about a week, and can’t wait for more to be written.
There IS some very harsh content in the series, including torture, a hell of a lot of dubious consent (played for titillation; it’s a story where at least half the cast feeds on sex, you’ve got to expect it), major character death and at least one graphic rape scene (NOT played for titillation, actually, and the fallout from it is major and well-handled), so if any of those things are massive deal-breakers for you, give it a pass…
I’d still highly recommend it to anyone who doesn’t have actual, legitimate triggers related to those topics, though, because it’s an excellent story and one that will stick with you. I seriously almost turned around and just started reading again from the beginning after finishing the third book. I just ran out of alternative things to read recently, and if I don’t find something really good in a day or so, I’m thinking I’ll do just that.
Wow! Just wow! I’m speechless.
I want to know what happens next but I’m afraid about what is going to happens next. I prefer HEA. Real life sucks enough I don’t want to read unhappy endings. Someone let me know if this series ends well. Thanks
