Captivating the Earl is book five in the Lords & Ladies in Love series by Callie Hutton. This was a wonderful romantic romp with lots of action and adventure. I couldn’t put the book down. Miss Lizzie Moore is a governess that Richard, The Earl of Hawkins finds himself captivated by. Little does he know that Miss Moore has a secret that will plunge him into a deadly game of life and death. Fantastic story! I hope Hutton has more in this series.
Nothing like an amazing mystery to keep the pages of a book turning. Captivating the Earl by Callie Hutton is book 5 in the Lords & Ladies In Love series. I read this book over night as I could not put it down. I had to know what was going to happen next in this regency mystery romance and every time something happened I was surprised. Also this is a love at first sight story and who doesn’t love that particular genre. Callie writes such wonderful characters especially Elizabeth and Hawk (short for Lord Hawkins) that you just find yourself cheering for them. Her descriptions are true for that era, very easy to read and just a little bit steamy but not overly. This story has a traitor, scandal, incognito, 3 attempted murders, a protector, secrets, missing evidence, breaking into a house, a true friend, understanding, kindness and yes, love at first sight! I highly recommend you read this book, you will not be disappointed!!
***This book was gifted to me and I am voluntarily reviewing.
Very romantic with a strong lady and a hero who fights for her.
Lord Richard Hawkins, “Hawk” to his friends, bored with his rakish entertainments and a bit disgusted with his own behavior, leaves London for a visit with his cousin, the Earl of Wycliff, and his family in the country. There he encounters Lizzie, governess to Wycliff’s four children. Lizzie is hiding out in the country hoping not to be recognized for the former debutante that she is, or associated with her on-the-run father. As Lizzie and Hawk spend more time together he begins to suspect that she is more than she claims to be. After a riding accident that injures Lizzie, Hawk becomes even more suspicious, and also concerned for Lizzie’s safety, especially given the growing attraction he feels for her. After spending time working for the Home Office, Hawk is inclined to be suspicious of most everything and is convinced that accident was no accident at all and Lizzie is not whom she claims to be. Hawk must decide whether to follow his orders from the Home Office and bring Lizzie in for questioning or listen to his own heart’s determination to keep her safe no matter what.
This was a quick, enjoyable read with good romance, some steam, and a bit of intrigue and action. The ending felt a bit rushed, but I really enjoyed this one and would recommend it.
I received a complimentary ARC from the publisher via NetGalley. Thank you! All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Her father brought disgrace to his family, including Lady
Elizabeth or Lizzie. She’s safe in an unlikely spot, until she’s found out; but she may not be able to return for questioning…
Enjoyed the premise and story. Delightful and mysterious.
Good series.
Rcvd an ARC at no cost to author..(netgalley) Lizzie is working as a governess after she flees from London where her father was known for treason. Hawk comes to visit his friends and he knows there is something to this governess he feels like he knows her, which come to find out he does. Captivating the Earl
book five
by Callie Hutton
Hawk’s and Lizzie’s story.
There’s so much going on in this story, it’s so captivating and fast paced. Witty banter with humour plenty of twists and turns that will keep you guessing at who the villain is. A love that was never expected but totally encompassing.
Can they overcome their differences and allow their hearts to be free to love? Will the villain be stopped?
This was fantastic addition to the Lords series and I can’t wait to see what’s next!
This was a complimentary copy from the publisher via NetGalley. This was my honest unbiased opinion.
When your main squeeze was military he can take you in with less than a minute in time when I start a read. In this one it is Jack who was a marine but now he is doing something else in life and crosses paths with Blaine. The relationship will take you along the heights it has when the chemistry starts for the two and the story develops. When the drama escalates this one is able to pull you also along to the edge and keep you poised until something develops there also. Actually this one pulls you in from beginning to the end with not looking back but forward to the next one.
Captivating the Earl by Callie Hutton is book 5 in the Lords and Ladies in Love Series. This is the story of Richard, the Earl of Hawkins and Elizabeth aka Lizzie Moore.
Lizzie’s father was accused of treason so she escape to the countryside to start a new life as a governess. Which has worked for her for awhile until Hawk comes to visits and he knows there is something going on with her. In addition someone is attempting to kill her. Hawk goes forward to protect her the best way he can.
Enjoyed reading their story…this has been a great series so far.
Hawk and Lizzie meet at Lord Wycliffe’s estate. She is governess to Wycliffe’s children. He is Wycliffe’s cousin. From the moment they met, they are drawn to each other. After several attempts on her life, Lizzie (who Hawk now knows is Lady Elizabeth Munroe, daughter of an infamous traitor) and Hawk set out for London where they hope to discover who wants Lizzie dead and to prove her innocence in her father’s treachery.
Captivating the Earl has action and danger, secrets, and suspense. I like that you can’t guess who the villain is until the story reveals the scoundrel’s identity. This is also a story of romance and passion. Hawk and Lizzie have a wonderful chemistry. They have common interests. I love their sometimes snarky banter, especially when Lizzie bests Hawk. Most of the characters are familiar from the other stories in this series, there to help when needed. I thoroughly enjoyed this story. It is a fine addition to the series. I recommend the book and the Lords and Ladies in Love series.
I received an ARC of this book from the publisher via NetGalley. My review is voluntary.
Captivating the Earl features a woman from society hiding out as a governess — her dad’s a traitor and she needed a new start. Complicating her secret identity is the fact that someone wants her dead. Lizzie is really Lady Elizabeth and when the Earl of Hawkins meets her as governess to his cousin’s children, he is intrigued. Then he is infuriated as he finds her secret identity; he is charged by the Home Office with bringing her in. But he won’t, until he figures out how to keep her safe. He is an absolutely swoon-worth hero, someone who sizes up a situation and does what needs to be done to keep the woman he loves safe. And unlike so many heroes, he doesn’t take too long to admit how he feels either, or act cold and aloof to protect his heart. And Lady Elizabeth, also unlike many heroines, is never foolish and meets Hawk as an equal, not a rebellious, silly young woman. This is a well-matched couple, both in intelligence and spirit. And a thrilling spy tale as well. (I received an ARC/via NetGalley. Opinions mine).
To say I was captivated by this story puts it lightly!! Hiding away as a governess for two years, Lizzi has felt safe from the authorities looking for her. Unfortunately, Hawk, Lord Hawkins shows up to spend time with his friends, her employers. What now!! An Earl with good looks and roguish ways, is not good for her libido, and keeping up her charade! But what’s a girl to do once he gets a missive to bring her in and realizes who she is? Is she a criminal hiding or an innocent lady whose father was a traitor? It seemed love at first sight between the two and Callie Hutton brings these characters alive to the point you can feel their emotions, although keeping you in suspense as to what will happen. Throw in attempts on Lizzie’s life and a search for evidence that cannot be found while time is running out. Prepare to be delighted with this fast paced story that will have you sighing at the end. Cannot wait for the next one!!
I liked the story, the style of writing with good dialog, and how the romance between Hawk and Lizzie developed.
What prevented me from giving a 5th star was Lizzie (repeatedly) thinking she’d lose her independence and freedom to make her own decisions by marrying. She’s a young woman basically hiding from the outside world and working as a governess, although in a very accommodating household. She’s in a precarious situation; how she could think she had freedom?
The ending of the story and the exposure of the culprit was a bit rushed and eye-roll worthy.
I read an advance copy and voluntarily post my review.
Callie Hutton continues to do a wonderful job with this series. Hawk and Lizzie’s story is a continuation of the intrigue that surrounds these four friends and the ladies they inevitably fall in love with. The characters are smart, funny and charming. Lizzie is feisty, which is just one of the many things that make her attractive to Hawk. They fall in love and Hawk finds he will do anything in his power to protect the woman he loves.
4.5 Stars
Lady Elizabeth Munro is hiding in plain sight…and very plain dresses. To escape her traitorous father’s reputation, she’s left behind the glittering balls of London Society to act as a governess. Lord Hawkins is a rake of the highest order, but something about the beautiful governess working for his cousin makes him want to act like a gentleman. After an attempt on her life, Hawk discovers who Elizabeth really is. Now under orders from the Home Office to bring her in, Hawk vows instead to protect her. Hawk may be handsome and honourable, but no matter how much Lizzie wants to give in to her desires, falling for the tempting man will surely bring heartbreak. Especially when he proposes the only way to keep her safe is to marry her. She doesn’t want his name if he’s only doing it out of a sense of duty. But someone in the Home Office wants Lizzie dead and it’s up to Hawk to convince her of the danger when even becoming his countess may not save her life.
This is the fifth book in the series & whilst it’s easily read as a stand alone book it does feature characters from earlier books. Lizzie is the daughter of the Earl of Loverly & this book finally solves the case of the traitors which began in Denying the Duke. This is another well written page turning read. The characters are well fleshed & I love it when a rake falls in love & Hawk is no exception. Lizzie is a strong character who has survived her father’s treasonous acts & managed to forge a life for herself. The pace of the book is very good, it was entertaining, intriguing & the chemistry between Hawk & Lizzie was so apparent from the start. I hope Lord Campbell has his story as there was a definite hint about it at the end.
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
I am a sucker for any story with the Home Office or spies so this story definitely appealed to me. I was looking forward to Hawk’s story and it does not disappoint. Hawk is a guy I would describe as a guy’s guy. He knows what he wants and does not hesitate to act on it but he also has a vulnerable side. Loved Lizzie. She is her own woman and even through Hawk tries to take over her life she stands her ground. You go, girl! Their interactions are sweet and sexy and just a fun read.
So, I think Campbell is up next. Yay!
I received a complimentary copy from the publisher through NetGalley,
Richard, the Earl of Hawkins, known to friends as Hawk has grown overwhelmingly border with life amongst to “ton”. It’s time to visit his cousin and best friend in the countryside. He blames himself for the death of his sister and has been restless ever since.
Miss Lizzy Moore escaped London and has been working as a governess for the last two years. She is happy to care for someone else’s children since she is unlikely to have her own. Nobody can ever find out who she is or who her father was.
This is an exciting historical romance. The characters are fun and easy to get involved with. An independent and brave heroine and a suspicious and over protective hero. Just what I enjoy.
I loved it.
4.5 Stars!
This is the fifth book in the series and the third I’ve read so far. If you haven’t read the third book in the series, Denying the Duke, I suggest you do so before jumping into this one. The villain from book three left behind a daughter, Lady Elizabeth Munro. After his deeds were exposed, Lizzie fled with the help of a friend and became a governess under the alias of Lizzie Moore.
When her employers cousin, the dashing Lord Hawkins, visits, Lizzie is terrified he might recognize her from their one dance during her first season. Hawk is drawn to Lizzie immediately, but doesn’t remember her outside of her current position. Lizzie relaxes a little, but an attempt on her life sends both her and Hawk’s lives into an intertwined spiral that won’t stop until a traitor is found.
Hutton takes us on another journey into romance and peril. Hawk is dynamic but flawed, making him more real than your average hero. Lizzie is incredibly resilient after all that Hutton puts her through. Hutton puts Lizzie through her paces as she struggles to survive falling in love while fighting for her life.
You know how people sometimes scream at the TV? I was screaming at this book at times when Hutton threw one curve ball after another. But you know I loved it and I’m sure the historical romance lover in you will too!
I received this book for free. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
Traitors, Attempted Murder and Passion.
I thoroughly enjoyed this story. After her traitorous father fled England, Lady Elizabeth (Lizzie) Munro found herself in desperate straits but a friend helped her to find a governess post under an assumed name and for the past two years she has a comfortable and satisfying job with the Earl and Countess of Wycliff. Unfortunately that all changes with the visit of the Earl’s cousin; suddenly she finds her life is in danger and that she is attracted to a man who feels “responsible” for her! Highly recommended.
