Meet Captain Gabriel Lacey, a half-pay cavalry officer who returns to Regency London with little money and no purpose, but with a sense of honor and fairness. He’s pulled into a search for a missing young woman, and thus begins investigating crime, using his status as a gentleman but a poor one to cross the boundaries between the top of society and the working class of the back streets.
In The Hanover Square Affair, a missing girl and horrific corpse plunge Captain Lacey into the dark underworld of Regency London.
In A Regimental Murder Captain Lacey is on hand to save the life of a beautiful widow; he then investigates the death of her husband, a colonel who had been accused of murdering a cavalry officer during the Peninsular War.
In The Glass House, Lacey investigates the death of a barrister’s young wife, and links her to a notorious brothel where the haut ton play.
Two short stories finish off the collection. In “The Disappearance of Miss Sarah Oswald,” Lacey is asked to locate a man’s missing daughter, though he senses that the family would be just as happy for her to remain missing. In “The Gentleman’s Walking Stick,” Lacey untangles a web of deceit involving a respectable society man, his only clue being a missing walking stick.
Join Captain Lacey and his friends as he investigates intrigue, murder, and villainy from the plush ballrooms of Mayfair to the darker streets of Regency London.

All the Lacey books are worth reading.
I’m a huge fan of the Captain Lacey mystery series. The characters, dialogue and descriptions of the Regency era are extremely well done. This is an excellent, entertaining mystery series that’s well worth your time.
I enjoy historical mysteries and this series of books with Captain Lacey has everything about the genre that I love! I highly recommend these books to any reader that enjoys this time period and a good mystery. The characters become more well rounded and interesting book after book as each becomes more familiar and the links between the characters …
Interesting look at old England while enjoying a mystery. The main character was well developed. I am looking forward to the rest of the series.
Love captain Lacey!
This collection of Regency Era novels combines two of my favorite genres: mystery and romance. Be advised that the first novels in this series are skewed more toward mystery, but with each successive book the reader learns much about the character of Captain Gabriel Lacey, a most untraditional hero. He is flawed, yet supremely principled; highly …
This is the first of a series of Regency mysteries set in London starting in 1816. The investigator is a damaged British officer home from the Napoleonic Wars, whose sense of honor embroils him in the disappearance of a young woman who has no one else to worry that she has gone missing. The setting is authentic without being arch, and the notion …
Loved this entire series for its wit, authenticity and well developed characters. Capt. Lacey is flawed, but very real and appealing. Read them all many times over and hope for more in the series.
Very entertaining, enjoyable series. I have all 13 books written so far and have enjoyed each one.
Liked the variety of characters, especially Captain Lacy being his own man.
Unexpectedly good regency mystery series. Delighted I found this author.
Language was awkward, probably because of the period it was set. Didn’t care for the premise once I started
I love, love, love these books. The period of history is interesting. The characters are fun. You never know who will be able to help Captain Lacey solve the mystery. I look forward to reading all the books in the series but spread them out because I know I’ll miss them when I finish!
I just finished The Hanover Square Affair and was totally absorbed in it. Captain Lacey is a broken man suffering from what we now call depression and is trying to adjust to life after the war. He’s an honorable man as well and this gets him involved in an abduction case. For a 1st in a series, this was an engrossing, somewhat sordid and gritty …
I give it three stars because even though characters are wonderful and story line entertaining, story seems to drag in some areas of the the book.
I love historical fiction and this is a wonderful series. Can’t wait for the next one!
Actually I’m surprised I read all 3 of the series and was a bit disappointed there wasn’t a 4’th. It was an easy read and kept me interested. Insight to the Times was also interesting.
Nice light weight reading for entertainment value and a bit of a look back in history
I’m almost done with the last (I think) book in this series. I’ve found it very: 1) engaging, 2) historically accurate (mostly, I think), and 3)entertaining. I’ll save the rest for a final review when I’m done.
I thought these were very original, easy-to-read, and gave a little window into that time. Well written and descriptive. Great stories with mysteries I could not figure out (always a plus when it keeps me guessing)!
