Justin Blackwood can’t remember a time when he believed in the magic of anything, least of all love. A cynical businessman, who grew up in a broken home, he guards his heart with every breath he takes. His job has taken him all over the world and roots are the last thing he wants…until he meets a beautiful innkeeper in Whisper Lake.
Warm-hearted, free-spirited Lizzie Cole wants it all—the … wants it all—the dream job of running her own inn and a man who wants to settle down. Despite a previous romantic setback, she still believes in happily ever after and her perfect soulmate. She just has to find him. While the dark-haired man with the shockingly blue eyes makes her heart beat faster, Justin Blackwood is the last man who should leave her breathless. He’s her complete opposite and they don’t want the same things.
But when a lunar eclipse throws Whisper Lake into darkness, Lizzie and Justin find themselves struggling to fight the moonlight and a love that could change their lives—if they’re willing to take the risk.

Heading back to Whisper Lake is like going to a favorite place and feeling the tension leave your body as you cross the city limit sign. I love this place. It’s magical and fun. The people are hopeful and welcoming even when things don’t always go their way.
During our third visit to this fabulous area, we find Lizzie, the proprietor of the Firefly Inn. Although she has issues of her own, she is always upbeat and draws people in with her nurturing attitude. We also meet Justin, driven, lonely, needy. As cold as Lizzie is warm. Add in a haunted room at the Inn, an unrequited love, a vow renewal, and a grandparental ‘fix up’, and you have a wonderful story of healing, believing, and letting go.
Everyone deserves a happily ever after and Lizzie and Justin get theirs.
Although Can’t Fight the Moonlight is book three in the Whisper Lake series, it can easily be read as a standalone. I enjoy Ms. Freethy’s writing style and will continue reading the books in this series, and pretty much anything she writes.
I enjoyed the love story between Lizzie and Justin after a challenging set of circumstances. Justin takes a short trip to Whisper Lake for the vow renewal ceremony of his grandparents, and Lizzie owns an inn in the small country town. Lizzie and Justin live in two different cities, but they decide to share several days together before he returns to his hometown of San Francisco. Lizzie has her own issues and so does Justin who grows to like staying in Whisper Lake. But he has his own business in San Francisco and harbours a sad secret, which prevents him from committing completely to Liz. Will they get their happily ever after? You’ll have to read to find out.
Always an enjoyable experience reading her stories.
I absolutely loved Can’t Fight the Moonlight by Barbara Freethy. It is the third book in the Whisper Lake series. Barbara Freethy has once again shown that she is an amazing storyteller. I could not put it down and I loved every page. I think Can’t the Moonlight is my favorite story in the series. I really enjoy how the book is told from the perspective of the main characters. I love getting the insight and feelings from the different characters. Can’t Fight the Moonlight is a love at first sight story and is filled with heartbreaking and heartwarming moments. I love the lighter moments where I find myself smiling and laughing out loud. It is also filled with bittersweet moments that cause me to sigh, say aww to myself with tears filling my eyes. Can’t Fight the Moonlight is filled with such moments, and with so much emotion. It is filled with all those things that we have come to love and expect in a love story, especially the poignant and bittersweet moments that filled this page turner. Can’t Fight the Moonlight is the story of Justin Blackwood, owner of a San Francisco robotics company and Lizzie Cole, owner of the Firefly Inn. Both Lizzie and Justin are owners of their own dream companies. Lizzie and Justin meet when Justin is driving too close behind Lizzie’s truck and Lizzie hits her brakes to avoid a deer and Justin crashes into a fence to avoid hitting her truck. As it turns out, Justin is the grandson of one of Lizzie repeat guests, Marie and Ben Blackwood, who are having a wedding vow renewal ceremony the next week end. Lizzie gives Justin a ride to the Firefly Inn, since Justin’s grandparents have reserved a room for him there for the week. Marie and Ben’s flight is cancelled, so Lizzie and Justin spend some time together. I love how Lizzie tries to fight her feelings for Justin, she does not want to be a fling and he doesn’t do relationships. Lizzie knows that Justin’s home and work are in San Francisco, he will return there on Sunday and he travels all over the globe for work. Things change when they share a kiss on the lake shore. His grandparents also were meddling in their relationship and back out of scheduled sail boat excursion on the lake, leading Lizzie to join Justin. Lizzie is having some financial difficulties with the inn and since her family invested in the inn, she is stressed out about the future of the inn. Justin offered Lizzie some suggestions on how to improve the bottom-line. Lizzie and Justin take their relationship to the next level and share secrets with one another. Justin told Lizzie about his brother, Sean and his estrangement from his parents. Justin’s estranged parents show up at the lake following the eclipse and everything changes between Lizzie and Justin. In his anger at his parent’s surprise arrival, Justin says some mean and hurtful things to Lizzie adding to her own insecurities because of the secrets they shared the night before. I love how the plot twist gets resolved and how Lizzie and Justin are willing to take a chance at love. My favorite part of the story is the relationship advice that Marie, Ben, and Noah give to Lizzie and Justin. I also like how some of Justin’s advice has new meaning is his life. I love how there were several storylines happening in the story. I loved that Can’t Fight the Moonlight is a more than just a romance, there are dilemmas that both Lizzie and Justin are facing that need to be resolved. I love that there was the Noah-Alice storyline, the storyline about the inn’s finances, Marie and Ben’s wedding vow renewal storyline, but most importantly Lizzie and Justin’s story. I love all the descriptions of the Whisper Lake setting that Barbara Freethy details. Can’t Fight the Moonlight is filled with the poignant and bittersweet moments in the story as well as the plot twists, that I have come to love and expect in Barbara Freethy’s stories. I love the cast of characters in Can’t Fight the Moonlight and I am looking forward to reading the other books in the series. Who doesn’t love family and friends that always have each other’s backs? Reading Can’t Fight the Moonlight felt like a family reunion, because the reader was able to catch up with Gianna and Zach, Chelsea and Brodie, and the other characters from the other books in the series. I also enjoyed catching up with Chloe and Kevin, but still not sure how any of it impacts Adam’s feeling for Chloe. I was happy that Lizzie overcame her fears and was willing to sing again. I thoroughly enjoyed Can’t Fight the Moonlight, who doesn’t love a love at first sight story.
Can’t Fight the Moonlight is book three in the Whisper Lake series. This book sucked me right in, and I couldn’t put it down. The story was very enjoyable. I highly recommend it.
I like all of this authors books. Easy reading.

Can’t Fight the Moonlight is book 3 in the Whisper Lake series by Barbara Freethy. Welcome back to Whisper Lake..
Justin Blackwood and Lizzie Cole complete opposites, who meet when he comes to Whisper Lake to attend his grandparents vow renewal celebration.
What happens next…sparks fly, secrets, lunar eclipse and finding a happily ever after or not? Only time will tell….
Easy to read, characters you relate to and love, a great setting. Great book
The small little town of Whisper Lake finds ways to heal people and lead them to find love, even when they weren’t looking for it. This is what happened to Justin and Lizzie. City guy, Justin is only in this town to attend his loving grandparents wedding renewal. He would do anything for his grandparents since they were there for him when his parents never were and when a family tragedy happened years ago. Justin is career minded and his company is his true love. He has no time of desire to fall in love and he never intended to find love during this mini vacation or have to face past family heartache.
Lizzie Cole owns and operates an Inn in the beautiful town of Whisper Lake. She is living her dream, but this dream comes with lots of hard work and an Inn that is barely making ends meet. She has a run in, literally, with Justin and that is the start of their new found friendship.
These two grow to friends and more over the week that Justin is staying at Lizzie’s inn. Beside’s getting to know each other better, they are actually growing and evolving as individuals too. They both need to face family issues, business struggles and figuring out their feelings towards each other. This is a heartfelt story that is well written. I love hearing how the other couples are doing from the previous books in the series. This could be read as a standalone, but I recommend reading this series in order to get the most out of understanding all the characters in the story. I hope you enjoy your time reading about Whisper Lake and the healing that always happens in this town. Another great love story by Barbara Freethy!
Can’t Fight the Moonlight is a wonderfully written romance in the small town of Whisper Lake. A visit to Whisper Lake is always an enjoyable trip. The town is known to have some magical healing powers and is now helping Lizzie and Justin deal with some of their past issues. Barbara Freethy makes you care for all of the residents and visitors to Whisper Lake. I enjoy catching up with the characters from previous books as well as meeting new ones. This is a great addition to the Whisper Lake series. It’s a wonderful vacation from the current-day craziness. My only complaint is it ended too soon! I’m looking forward to the next book in the series.
I can’t remember reading a book by Barbara Freethy before, because I know if I had, she would be on my list of favorite authors – and when that happens, I want to devour everything they have ever written. From the very first page, I was intrigued by this book and found myself making excuses to pick it up when I should have been doing something else.
What I loved about this romance is that it was so real. Lizzie and Justin were people with good sides as well as problems. They each were able to help each other recognize those traits in themselves. Whisper Lake and the Firefly Inn are places that I want to visit and be welcomed.
One of my favorite aspects of this writer – and this book in particular – is her ability to describe a romantic scene. I was talking to my husband about how I don’t really care for books with detailed sex scenes that describe every body part and what they are doing with them. When I got to a romantic scene in Can’t Fight the Moonlight, I actually read him two paragraphs and said that, in my opinion, it was much more sensual that ten pages of steamy sex descriptions.
I am certainly looking forward to reading more of Barbara Freethy’s books in the future.
I really loved this story. It’s a lovely warm romance to curl up and read with a cup of tea. I highly recommend it!
This is a fantastic addition to this series! I love visiting whisper lake and it’s residents and have to say this latest story had me shedding a few tears , laughing a few laughs and will make your visit well worth it! Love, family, trust, tragedy and romance, I loved Justin and Lizzie’s story, loved seeing old friends as well as meeting new ones! Absolutely fabulous!
Lizzie Cole is living a dream, or managing her dream, she owns the Firefly Inn in Whisper Lake, a dream she has had since she was a child.
Justin Blackwood is coming to Whisper Lake for their grandparents’ wedding vows renewal party, 57 years of marriage, they wish their workaholic grandson to be present. For that, Justin had to cancel a super important trip.
When Justin and Lizzie meet they soon realize how different they are, he is cold and very serious, she is cheerful and very friendly. But they have work and love for their business as a priority, and that makes them understand each other.
Lizzie promises Justin that she will make him have fun and even like Whisper Lake, what they didn’t imagine is that their similarities and differences would unite them and help them deal with their difficulties and that together they will win the world!
I loved this fun, quirky and romantic story. Lizzie is the Innkeeper on Whisper Lake. Justin has come for his grandparents renewal ceremony. He is a control freak who loses control from the first day and the results are both warm and amusing. These two are fighting a powerful attraction to each other but they are very different and want different things. The resulting story is wonderful. Highly entertaining addition to the Whisper Lake stories.
Love this series
Justin is off to Whisper lake for his grandparents renewell of there wedding vows.He never takes a day of and is serious and deep into his bussiness.Lizzie is th owner of the Inn and a people pleaser and opposite of Justin. The two are thrown together by his grandmother as she wants Justin to have more then bussiness in his life.Lizzy isn’t the type to have just a fling but she decides to enjoy Justin until he leaves . XT HE night of the Eclipse the two find out they both want the same things .This is the 3rd book in the series and I love this small town and how close the residents are . A series that is a must read
Every time I feel that Barbara Freethy has given me my favorite couple, she publishes another book & I have a new favorite. Lizzie is sweet, warm hearted and totally in over her head. It’s so easy to identify with her because she’s so down to earth & is trying to make a go of her childhood dream. She’s always wanted to run an inn in the town of Whisper Lake. She doesn’t have time for a man in her life.
Enter Justin Blackwood. Justin has come to the inn to help his grandparents celebrate their vow renewal. He’s not in a good mood since he has a huge business deal in the works. If it were anyone else, he’d refuse to go. He doesn’t believe in magic or love. Justin has his mind on only business & no sentiment. He doesn’t have time for anything or anybody to deter him from reaching his goals. He’s single minded in his pursuit. Then he meets Lizzie & is single minded in pursuit of her.
I just love this series by the amazing author Barbara Freethy. “Can’t Fight the Moonlight” is the third book in the Whisper Lake Series. Just like every other book that I have read of Barbara’s this one drew me right in and kept me turning the pages well into the night. I did not want to put it down; I read it in one sitting. This was a quick enjoyable read. We were introduced to new friends and caught up with old ones. This book has it all romance, second chances and of course a HEA. I highly recommend this book and series you will not be disappointed. I can’t wait for the next book in this series.
The third installment of the Whisper Lake series is amazing. I wish this were a real place and that I could live there. Barbara Freethy has a gift for story telling. The words and story just flow, and I don’t want to put the book down and deal with the real world. This is Lizzie and Justin’s story. She runs the Inn, which I would LOVE to visit, and he runs his own Robotics company. Justin’s grandparents, who basically raised him, are renewing their wedding vows. His grandmother convinces him that he needs to come for the whole week. Even though it’s an inconvenience, Justin makes the trip. Their story is very believable and fun from their first meeting until the end. Lots of friends are involved in this story and I’m looking forward to seeing which one will be featured in the next installment. I highly recommend this series!
Lizzie and Justin meet as a result of an accident. Justin is a workaholic who is driven, independent, angry and hurt by an upbringing he can’t forgive. Lizzie is also fiercely independent and driven in her own way as an innkeeper in Whisper Lake. But Lizzie is also a people person, an asset in her chosen profession. Something between Justin and Lizzie clicks. But secrets and insecurities are revealed over time. Barbara Freethy has written a beautiful and heartwarming five star read.
