A beloved series from Janette Oke! Nothing in her cultured upbringing prepared Elizabeth for life in the West. The frontier will test this teacher’s faith but also stir her heart.Includes:1 When Calls the Heart2 When Comes the Spring3 When Breaks the Dawn4 When Hope Springs New5 Beyond the Gathering Storm6 When Tomorrow Comes
Ms. Oke is a wonderful writer. I have read all her books and look forward to her authoring more.
Even though the characters in this series are fictional, they very well could have been based on real historical characters. Ms. Oke, a native of the Canadian West writes about its history with feeling, understanding and authenticity.
Really this is the first time I’ve read novels by Janette Oke. Such good, wholesome reading. The little Canadian towns I was able to study apart from the novels and find them on the map. I’m able to put myself right into the main characters and even continue the stories in my nightly dream life. I feel enriched and uplifted by Janette’s writings in this Canadian West collection.
Janette Oke has long been a favourite of mine, and this collection is one I re-read frequently. I adore this series.
This a must read series if you enjoy the stories of Amish life.
This and all of Janet’s books are very good. I have read then over and over.
One of the best I have ever read
Loved the TV series but the books aremuch better.
It has been ages since I read any books written by Janette Oke, and reading her Canadian West series was like a trip back to my teenage years. I used to peruse the library shelves regularly to see what was there that I hadn’t read yet. Somehow, this series never made it to their shelves. It wasn’t until there was a TV show made based on book 1 (When Calls the Heart) that I realized I hadn’t read anything from this series.
I read this series in one fell swoop as I wanted so much to know what happened next with Elizabeth and Wynn. Out of all 6, I must say that book 1 and book 4 (When Hope Springs New) were worthy of 5 stars. Book 1 was so endearing with its slower pace of life and the beginnings of a new relationship. Book 4 was a difficult read, but so well written. I ached for Elizabeth and the hardships she faced. She longed for a child, but if she only knew what she was about to experience, the timing of children coming into their lives was worth the wait. Being a Mountie’s wife was never painted in rose-colored glasses, and I truly wondered if she was going to survive. Their postings became more primitive, and at times, I wondered how they would live until their next meal.
Book 4 was definitely finished as an ending to the original series, but there were two additional books written that focused on their children, Henry and Christine. To be honest, I did not love those as much, although the writing is much better (more descriptive, less telling, more showing). Book 6 seemed to end rather abruptly, and I didn’t enjoy Christine’s character much at all.
All in all, this series gets a well-deserved 4 stars. For those thinking that they’ll find the tv series in these pages, prepare yourself for something different, yet entirely worth reading.
Great Series!
More good books by Janette Oke
I think it was a good read
Loved her books! Deep spiritual insights at times. Learned historical info regarding the Mounties and that time period.
I really reading the entire series, good research into the subjects. I heartily recommend them.
I LOVE this series. This is what led to the Hallmark show When Calls The Heart. This is a GREAT author!!!! Read everything you can by her.
Janette Oke never disappoints. A wonderful collection that inspires and paints a picture of years past.
The first book in this series, “When Calls the Heart”, is one of my favorite books. I have read the series several times and would recommend it to anyone from teen to elderly. It was made into a series and was popular.
I loved this inspirational historical fiction book. It makes me feel good.
The first 4 books in Oke’s Canadian West series are well-researched and inspiring. Books 2 and 3 are especially spiritual and increased my faith.
Wonderful series. Love the books and love the TV series on Hallmark channel.
Great realistic fiction motivated by Christian principles.
