Really well written novel. Unlike any of her other works
Set in the 1920’s…this is the tale of Charlotte (Charlie) who falls in love with Matthew (bootlegging moonshine, restaurant owner, and 100% Alpha Man) during the prohibition era. When they first meet at the beginning of the book, Charlie is pretending to be a man so she can bring in the fugitive who is in the trunk of her unreliable car that breaks down, needing Matthews family for assistance. There is tension and distrust but a deal is worked out between the two.
Fast forward 6 months and Charlie is back in the same spot, Monroe County at Devils Hollow Roadhouse (which is Matthews restaurant) to lay low and set down roots. She spends her time adapting to the dirt poor back country in West Virginia to get away from her past – the opulent, violent gangster world of Chicago. As time goes by Matthew and Charlie fall for one another. But in the meantime it is hard for her go unnoticed, the kingpins wanting her back in Chicago and well as Emerson’s Distillery.
One of my favorite lines: “Eli, sometimes a woman don’t need a gentleman. Sometimes she needs a man”….Matthews says to his brother in regards to Charlie. Even though she can handle herself (with guns, her fists, foul mouth), she wants a man (Matthew) to take the lead. What a statement and I LOVED IT! Great story…loved the chemistry between Charlie and Matthew. Can’t wait to read book #2!
Such a surprisingly amazing story! My favorite from this author!
Charlie is such a great character – nothing like what a proper 1920s lady should be. Matthew is the perfect example of a brooding alpha male. Set during the days of prohibition and bootleggers, this slow-burn romance made me antsy for the sequel. Ready to one-click now. Great read!!
Not what I expected
Having read author Cain’s Words in the past I was unsure of this one since it steps out of what I’ve read before and since personally I don’t like Historical ANYTHING, personally I was ready to dislike it however as it is to be expected this author spun her web and I am another victim who just continues to seek her stories.
A Taste of shine brings us a story of a bounty hunter with a uncertain future along the way friendships are forged and a possible romance may be blossoming, I will assume nothing especially with the cliffhanger this story leaves us with, personally I am glad this duet is already available so my fellow reader if you consider reading this duet make sure you have enough time to jump on both as I couldn’t put down book one.
What a wild ride!
An upbeat story about prohibition and romance. We follow Charlie through shootings, bounty hunting, dances and courting. I reall enjoyed this book and could not put it down. It was adventurous and made me want to go to target practice. I will definatly recommend to my friends.
I read a copy of this for review.
Going into this one, I wasn’t exactly too sure on what to think. Usually I’m not the biggest fan of period pieces and this is a much different story than I am used to from Addison Cain.
It did not take me long at all the be completely immersed into her story and to fall in love with the not so cookie cutter Charlie and the silent and broody Matthew.
I really enjoy a story where the leading lady isn’t one who constantly needs a man to save her and this leading lady could hold her own any day.
Cain writes so well that her attention to detail really makes you feel like you are there with the characters. The picture she paints with her words puts you right into the story so easily. I have fallen for A Taste of Shine, Charlie, and the Emerson’s.
Highly recommend if you are a fan of historical romance and period pieces.
This book has a great story and great characters you love. It has great action and good twists. I didn’t want to put it down. I can’t wait for the next one. What will happen to Charlie and Matthew? This is a must read! I received an free ARC copy of this book and am giving an honest review.
I really loved this book even though it is not what I’m used to from Addison Cain. This book is not as dark as others I have read but I still found myself enthralled by the characters and the story line. This is a must read for those that like historical romance.
I am a relative newcomer to this author’s work. I started by reading Omegaverse stories, moved onto some very dark horror, and now? A story during the Prohibition era with a distinctly Western/gangster feel to it. I will read most genres if the writing is good, and this one captured my attention from the first page. Charlie is an amazing character with an unusual skill set. She meets up with the Emerson clan, led by the quietly grumpy Matthew. The characters in this book are so well-developed, I feel like I’d know them if I met them on the street. The plot is still brewing, as this is part one of a duet, but what I know so far has been sweet, scary, and riveting. Will be diving into the second part when it’s available.
I enjoyed the writing, but wasn’t willing to go on to the second book. I think I would have enjoyed the story more as one complete book.
Fab
Love the slow burn
slow and not reading the new installment …there was no real ending.
I very much enjoyed the story and can’t wait to read more.
I loved the characters. They seem so real to me and Charlie is very unique. She is a true original and really keeps you guessing as to what she will do next.
She really sees things differently from other women especially considering the time period the story is based on and what the expectations are for a woman her age. She has lived a hard life and wants something peaceful.
Matthew is equally intriguing with his tough demeanor but softer side too. I love how protective he is of her and I found his shyness in addressing his feelings for her very endearing. His brother and cousin add some fun and flavor to the story as well.
I am voluntarily reviewing a copy I received.
I didn’t read all of this book i just didn ‘t enjoy it.
The story showed the dark side of the moonshine business and the ruthlessness of the criminals involved. Yet there is a touch of romance between charactors
Okay, so I wasn’t really looking forward to this one, Addison writes such wonderful dark and nasty stories that I wasn’t sure how I could compare this, coupled with the fact this is a historical type read, which I really don’t like – you know it really surprised me, I’m dumb I should’ve give Addison more credit as it turned out to be a really interesting and captivating read, so very unlike the ones I usually read, I was totally engrossed when I got going and didn’t want it to end!!
Set in the days of Prohibition with gangsters and violence, moonshine and bootlegging, Addision and have creative writing and flair had me engrossed in the characters of Monroe County. This is very different from her usual writing and very much a slow burn and a gradual build up of getting to know the characters and their layers. I loved Charlie and her ways, having grown up surrounded by gangsters and lived on the streets by their rules, she is such a strong woman being able to do what she does. Badass doesn’t come close to describing her!! Yet in the world of romance and men she is very much unschooled and ignorant of their ways.
The Emerson family take her in and set about getting to know her. Matthew was awesome in his closed off, unemotional, grumpy yet caring ways. I certainly wasn’t ready for this book to finish and can’t wait to read the concluding book!! Definitely worth the read, even if you think its not your cup of tea, you might well be very surprised!!
Despite the fact that this book is another genre from Addison Cain’s usual books, it’s by no means inferior. Once again, Addison blows me away with her writing, she truly has a very special talent for storytelling. Loved it and highly recommend this story!
A must read
This is why I enjoy Cain’s work – her varied writing style. Shine is an exciting and engaging romance – though vastly different approach and style than her omegaverse stories – yet just as compelling and entertaining
Charlie – A woman submerged in a man’s world – determined to survive – has adapted and flourished. I really really enjoyed Charlie’s personality. She was wicked smart, intelligent confident and cocky – her solution to surviving was brilliant!
Matthew – the middle Emerson brother, the brains as well as the caretaker of the family, always in charge and on guard is fighting his attraction to Charlie – though I see this as a losing battle. I keep wanting to knock him around and yell “open your eyes! You are going to lose the best thing that has ever happened to you!”
I really enjoyed the characters – the Emerson’s are a blast with regards to quirks and traits – we just get a glimpse of some of the antagonists but just that little peek has me in defense mode
Want to know how this ends!!
This is the first of two parts
