I was enjoying it, but had to stop. Too many silly plot points adding up to too much. Why assume there’s only one possible collector of the Heart pieces? Why not state the simple, provable truth to accusations — if it’s genetic, she has to belong to the dragon riders, right? And why, oh why, does she let her honey-boo give her an incredibly valuable blade with his vague “someday I’ll tell my parent’s I took it” ? It’s so obvious that someone else is the baddie, that she’s a long-lost extra special dragon rider, and that she’ll be accused of stealing the blade at some critical point.
I was the more frustrated as until the weight of these heavy-handed plot-dumps added up, I was really enjoying the book.
Sure, there’s the standard nasty beautiful bitch, who’s boyfriend the heroine gets off with, and the friendly, spunky good friend, etc etc, but it was well done.
Oh well …. I’m disappointed.
Light romance and all action. Dragonriders of Pern this is not. It’s better!
I chose this book because I love the Pern stories by Anne McCaffrey and this had the same close relationship between dragon and rider. I’m a real penny-pincher, so it was a big deal for me to spend 3.99 on Kindle book, but it was great. I’ve ordered book 2, Flight of the Dragon, and pre-ordered book 3, Might of the Dragon.
This book hooked me from the very beginning. An adventure and a heroine that remind me of Sunaya, with all the independence and morals, sass and bravery you could want in a heroine. An adaptable and loyal woman that takes the punches given with stoicism and bravery, trusts even when it should not be given so freely and a wanderlust that presents itself with an innate need to find things once lost. Dragons. Magic. Flying islands. Treasure. A sexy, brooding hero reminiscent of a few earlier favourites of mine and a cast of friends we could only wish for in our own lives rounds this story of perfectly. Sublime is the word that comes to mind. The adventure is just getting started and I am anxiously awaiting the next one. Go Jessica!
Great story. Can’t wait for the next books in the series.
I really liked this book. It was very easy to read. The story line was great and it kept my attention throughout. I was sort of sad when the book ended as I didn’t want it to end and wanted it to be longer. The main character is a nice mix of personalities and skills and I like how she evolved. Parts of this book reminded me a bit of other dragon stories like Eragon series, which is good, and its been years since I read something like this. I recommend this book. I’m so looking forward to the next book in the series.
Just like old times with this story. Reminds be so much of her Baine novels with the kickass female, the underdog tone, and overcoming obstacles. Pick it up fast! This book didn’t last me a day.
Love this new series, it’s full of danger, lust and bonding. There’s a real sense of purpose as the story unfolds. The author conveys the gap between those born to fly and those forced to cater to the upper class. It has all the makings of another rags to riches best seller. I really don’t want to wait for the next one.
I received an ARC of this story and have voluntarily chosen to review it here.
Fabulous read that has me dying for book 2! Must read for fans of fantasy, dragons and steampunk!
This is Jasmine Walt’s finest work to date. She returns to her style of writing found in the Baine Chronicles. If you enjoyed that series, with the Fenris spin offs, you are going to love the wonderful characters in Call of the Dragon. This is a beautiful seduction. Walt’s writing draws you into her world and won’t let you go. If you are a fan of Patricia Briggs, you owe it to yourself to read this first book in Walt’s new series.
I received an ARC for an honest review.
I was hooked from the first page. The next book can’t come soon enough!
This is an epic start to a new series! It starts off reminding me strongly of the Nia Rivers series, then quickly morphs into Harry Potter meets Dragon Riders of Pern. It’s supposed to be steampunk, but other than a couple small items, it didn’t really have much of that aspect. Other than that, this is a beautifully crafted read that takes you away into its universe for an epic adventure that leaves you wanting more every time you read it! After I finished it, I immediately read it again, and it’s amazing how it comes to life. It’s one of those books that you pick up something new every time you read it which slightly skews what you thought you understood about it! Thank you for the opportunity to review this, I loved it!
This is a book for dragon lovers and good luck putting it down- I read it straight through. This is a series where it’s going to be difficult waiting for the next book because you want to read it now. I don’t think you will be disappointed with this book at all.

Zara Kenrook is a treasure hunter who co-owns an antique shop on the ground. Her lineage is unknown as she was raised in an orphanage. Events occur that result in her becoming bonded with a dragonling, Lessie. This catapults her into an unknown way of living and new adventures in the cities in the sky/dragon academy. Other things you can expect:
Dragon wars/history, magic, dragon god, bad guys, floating islands that people live on, the dragon academy (some snotty people/some nice, classes, dragon riding, etc.), upper class vs. lower class (upper city vs. ground-dwellers), gangs who run the street/crime on the ground, romance, friendships (old and new), twists and turn that you may or may not see coming, and more!
I would highly recommend this book if you are into dragons, fantasy, magic, or fast-paced books.
Parental advisory: some swearing, stealing, war talk, talk of mating between dragons, mention of casual sex (once) and more adult relationship themes although minimal (kissing, mention of breasts once), flirting, killing, weapons. Would say this is a PG-13 rated book.
I received an ARC in exchange for my review, however I ALSO purchased the book.
Usually, when I start a new series it takes a bit for me to get pulled in but not with this one. In fact, the very first chapter had me pulled in with its action and I quite enjoyed that. Without divulging too much, I loved reading the various bonds that developed between the different characters. And, I love Lessie! Can’t wait to read their next adventure!
I received an ARC in return for an honest review.
I love Jasmine’s writing and have read a number of her series already. However, this may very well be my favorite book out of them all!! I cannot wait for more. Zara is a lovable heroine who has had her world turned upside down. The characters are so thought out and no one is perfectly good or perfectly evil. They all have grey like real life. If you love fantasy, dragons, and steampunk you must check this book out!!
ARC – I voluntarily offered to review this book with no obligations and my opinions are honest
Zara was abandoned at a very early age.
She knows what to do in order to survive.
This was supposed to be just like any of the other heist.
However, the stakes just got higher, but Zara is a fighter.
You will need to read the book to find out what happens to Zara + the dragon egg.
The storytelling + the character’s build were awesome!
It has all the ingredients that you need for a great book!
I can’t wait for the next book in the series!
