The California sunshine’s not quite so bright for three sisterswho get dumped in the same week… fine, she’s crumbling inside, desperate for him to come to his senses and for life to go back to normal.
Zennie’s breakup is no big loss. Although the world insists she pair up, she’d rather be surfing. So agreeing to be the surrogate for her best friend is a no-brainer—after all, she has an available womb and no other attachments to worry about. Except…when everyone else, including her big sister, thinks she’s making a huge mistake, being pregnant is a lot lonelier—and more complicated—than she imagined.
Never the tallest, thinnest or prettiest sister, Ali is used to being overlooked, but when her fiancé sends his disapproving brother to call off the wedding, it’s a new low. And yet Daniel continues to turn up “for support,” making Ali wonder if maybe—for once—someone sees her in a way no one ever has.
But side by side by side, these sisters will start over and rebuild their lives with all the affection, charm and laugh-out-loud humor that is classic Susan Mallery.

I fell in love with this book from the beginning. It’s a story about three sisters who get dumped on the same weekend. Finola’s marriage disintegrates, Ali’s fiancé calls it quits 6 weeks before the wedding, and Zennie’s boyfriend ends their relationship after a few dates. All three find out that life is all about change and how you handle it can turn into a better life. I hated to put the book down. I was angry at times, cried and laughed at other times, but in the end, I was sorry it had to end. Well done Susan Mallery.
Three sisters, three distinct personalities. I love, love, love everything about Susan Mallery’s writing. California Girls is the perfect beach read. Grab it up and immerse yourself in Susan’s amazing talent for unique, top-notch characterization in this wonderful page-turner as you follow the very different lives of Finola, Zennie and Ali! You won’t be sorry!
Surprised that I loved this book. Expecting an easy summer read and became enthralled in the characters.
Good read: three sisters, all different, all dealing with big changes in their lives.
Great read I really enjoyed the characters
Classic Susan Mallory — great characters of three sister relationships.
Was not my favorite Susan Mallory and I’ve read most of her books. The girls irritated me somehow. So much drama but most of it wasn’t really believable.
Love this author. Again she had me from the first chapter. Thourghly enjoyed this book.
Three sisters, all dumped in the same week.
Older sister Finola, a popular Los Angeles morning-show host, is excited about her upcoming vacation in Hawaii. Her husband has wanted a baby for some time but Finola kept putting it off. But now she ready and plans to surprise her husband with the news. However, she is the one in for a surprise. She finds out her husband is having an affair in the most humiliating way – blindsided just before she goes on air. Now she is determined to show the world she is just fine as privately she tries to pick up the pieces.
Athletic Zennie has just broken up with a guy she thought she wasn’t all that into. With no attachments, Zennie agrees to be the surrogate for her best friend. Most people in Zennie’s life thinks she has made a huge mistake. And when Zennie can no longer participate in the sports she loves and her body starts to change, she wonders if she did indeed make a mistake.
Youngest sister Ali’s fiancé doesn’t have the nerve to call off the wedding himself so the task is left to his brother Daniel. She always thought Daniel disliked her, but he keeps showing up to give her emotional support and taking charge of cancelling the wedding while Ali falls apart.
And their divorced mother Mary Jo is ready to downsize and prepares to put her house up for sale. While not a major character she was certainly not invisible.
With lots of tears and laughter, they all come together to support each other no matter what drama happens in their personal. Susan Mallery gives us four uniquely engaging, believable characters placed in situations we can all relate to. This book has it all – family drama, romance, heartbreak, female relationships. They find their happily-ever-after in different ways. A perfect vacation book.
California Girls was such a fun yet heart wrenching book. I didn’t want to put it down once I started. Considering the entire family were going through such awful times made it so believable and “normal”. The bickering and slighted feelings that are ever present in families is well represented in the book. I love the characters, they are all so different but yet the same. We all have the same insecurities…Thank you Susan Mallory.
really enjoyed this book
Read this book in 2 days, I couldn’t put it down !!!
You can relate to the people, you probably know most of them from somewhere.
Three sisters, three breakups, three interwoven stories of recovery and growth. I enjoyed getting to know Finola, Zennie, and Ali. The character development was well done. Their respective breakups and decisions were believable. I will say that the regrets of the guys and some of the aftermath were a little too predictable and the girls were more forgiving than most people would be. But I guess it gives us something to work towards. Definitely a good summer beach read!
Always love Susan Mallery’s books.
Good book. Interesting to see such different sisters and how they handle their life challenges. Some unexpected results in this book.
Just an all around good read…perfect for the beach!
Fast moving. Very realistic. We can all relate to one if the characters
A bestseller for sure!I could not put it down.
A prime example of “everything happens for a reason and its always for the best.” This is a HEA story for women who might not think they’re strong enough to endure heartache.
This is a story of 3 sisters who were all dumped on the same day. 3 different types of nightmares with which “not so strong women” needed to deal.
I loved the fact that when the men woke up to the fact they’d lost the best things in their lives, the women had already moved on.
In the end, everyone is happy and life moved on…typical Susan Mallery!
