This is a wonderful well-written story, it’s the first book in the Bree and Tanner Thriller series, it does not have a cliffhanger ending.
Bree first meets Tanner in his small hometown when she’s stealing diapers and formula for twin babies that aren’t hers. One the run with babies with danger on her tail and unknown assailants after her, she accepts his help. But the threat is bigger than what Tanner knows.
This is a fast-paced suspense filled story that keeps you at the end of your seat. I can’t wait to see what else Bree and Tanner get up to in the next book.
I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book. Wow, it is like a Thriller as Bree and Tanner stumble upon each other. So much going on in this book, you can trust nobody because anyone might be one of “them” and out to kill Bree for what she did a decade ago… I’m a little blown away and thrilled about the next book in the series. Great Story.
Tanner is the sheriff’s deputy of a small town. Bree is new in town and hiding from a large corporation that is after her. The danger level is high and suddenly she has the responsibility of caring for twins that are left in her care. Tanner feels something is off with Bree and is determined to uncover her secrets. The two of them have to come together to take this company down and as they work together the attraction they have for one another continues to grow.
Once you start this adventure you will not want to stop. The start of this story graps you and then continues with excitement, anticipation, suspense and of course romance. This is a page turner that you can not put down. The secondary characters are both fasinating and suspicious. Could this story turn into real life-it does make you wonder. This is a great beginning to the new series and I look forward to the next one.
I received a copy and I am voluntarily leaving my own honest opinion.
Calculated Risk is the first book of the Bree and Tanner Thriller. Bree is a young woman who is very adept at being alone, hiding, and running until a person from her past finds her and requests help. Against her better judgment, she agrees and then goes on the run with newborn twins. This sends her world into a tailspin. She’s exhausted and out of money when she finds herself in the town of Risk Peak where she resorts to shoplifting formula and diapers.
Captain Tanner Dempsey, the protector of Risk Peak, who takes his job very seriously. When he sees a young woman shoplifting diapers and formula, he decides to help her. Little did he know that small act of kindness would involve him in such intrigue and danger.
I loved this book from beginning to end. It was wonderful watching them maneuver through their relationship. It was fun watching Bree go from a scared young lady to a force to contend with. Loved how sweet and considerate Tanner is with Bree. It was funny how the town reacted to a very unpopular decision Tanner made about Bree. I also loved the little twist at the end.
if you love romance, suspense, intrigue, action, then this is the book for you!! I’m so looking forward to reading the rest of the series!!
I received an ARC copy of this book from the author in return for an honest review.
Wow what a brilliant start to a series. This book had so many twists and turns that you will never guess.
Was on the edge of my seat from cover to cover.
The storyline gripped me and refuses to let me go, so I can’t wait to see what happens next.
When we were told a few months back that Janie Crouch was going to try out a new concept for Harlequin Intrigue; featuring a same couple in a 4 books series, I was honestly a bit iffy about it. I am not a huge fan of cliffhangers, thank goodness that is not the case! Calculated Risk is book one in the Bree and Tanner thriller series and it definitely suspense driven. In this book we get an introduction to both of the main characters. Bree has been successfully hiding for the past three years, until someone from her past somehow finds her and asks for help. This results in Bree on the run once again but now with added charges. Tanner Dempsey is the Deputy captain of the sheriff’s office and is very protective of his town. So he is very suspicious of Bree right from the first meeting. But something about her also draws him to her and like the rest of the community of the small town of Grand County, he is determined to help her.
My heart broke for all that Bree had endured in her young life, her past has made her wary of everyone around her. She is used to being alone, so with her new charges and then this town and the attractive sheriff’s deputy’s wish to involve themselves in her life was difficult for her. There is not a lot of heat in this book between Tanner and Bree, however, the attraction is definitely there. I am very excited about where the next three books will take them.
The storyline and suspense was fast paced and kept me on my toes. This was a great first book in the series and cannot wait for the next!
I could not read this book fast enough. I was instantly captivated and needed to know the rest of the story NOW. Bree’s guarded because that’s the only way she’s ever known how to live her life, and it’s made her so strong and independent. Tanner embodies all the best noble characteristics the words “cop” and “cowboy” conjure up. It feels a little like maybe this story borrowed from the script pages of Live Free or Die Hard and Eagle Eye, though without all the explosions and most of the dying. I’m even audacious enough to suggests that there’s hints of Showtime in here. I like to hope that if you’ve seen the movie, you’ll understand what I’m talking about. I can’t wait to read more of this series. Once these two learn to fully trust one another they’re going to make a formidable team.
I received a complimentary advanced copy of this book from the author.
A sweet and tender romance amidst the high drama and danger that surround Bree and Tanner is not to be missed. One minute your heart aches for Bree and all the things she has missed out on and the next you see her determination and drive to keep her little charges, Christian and Beth safe. Tanner the ultimate protector of his town, county and Bree makes you catch your breath because he just seems to perfect. This is an incredible story that has you on high alert the whole time. The small town of Risk Peak has a charm all to itself and its residents are protective and loyal to the end. I really enjoyed it and couldn’t put the book down.
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
Calculated Risk
(A Bree and Tanner Thiller)
Janie Crouch
What a horrible way to have to live…on the run with two month old twins and no support. Bree finds herself in this position until she meets Tanner. Though trusting him or anyone is hard to do, she embarks on a suspense filled journey that has you not able to put it down. Twists and turns that makes this a nonstop reading adventure until the very end.
I love all of this author’s books—some more than others. This one is right up there with my all-time favorite Janie Crouch Intrigues. Once I started it, I couldn’t put it down. Both Bree and Tanner captured my interest and I can’t wait for the rest of the Risk series to see more of these two.
While the plot was pretty straightforward and the villain and good guy were easy enough to figure out, the storytelling was compelling and the characters engaging. That’s what it’s all about for me and puts this author’s books on my keeper shelf.
3.5 stars!
Calculated Risk kicks off a new series whose focus will be on the same couple throughout. Bree (aka Bethany) is a girl on the run from a shady organization. She has hid successfully for years until a ghost from her past shows up and throws her world into a tailspin. She takes off again, this time with twin newborns in tow and ends up in Risk Peak Colorado. Here, she meets lots of great people who are willing to help her and one stubborn cop who is sure she is hiding something.
Tanner is a suspicious sort of fella. He can see that Bree is in some kind of trouble. What he doesn’t know is what that trouble is: mafia, gambling debt, abusive husband. His fear is that Bree is going to bring trouble right to their tiny town’s door and that is not okay with him. He keeps an eye on Bree and soon gets caught up in her life, even though Bree won’t tell him what is going on! I liked that Tanner was suspicious. I think that was more realistic than a guy who just sees a woman he has feelings for and assumes she is NOT trouble. Wondering if she did something illegal and that is why she is on the run is realistic to me! Don’t assume because she is a woman that she must be a victim.
Bree is brilliant but also VERY naive. I feel like there is a lot more to her story, so I am glad the rest of series continues to focus on these 2 characters. I also loved the nods to other series by Crouch since I have adored all her books. Calculated Risk has no sex at all; the only intimate times involve some kissing. Again, this felt more realistic to me-the slow build of a relationship. So, Calculated Risk is MOM APPROVED!! I do think this series is one my mom would enjoy.
Calculated Risk (A Bree and Tanner Thriller #1) by Janie Crouch Thank you so much to the publisher and #NetGalley .. I mostly enjoyed this book… so much suspense .. What is going on with Emily Stevens..Bree(young mother of twins in some kind of trouble) that is what Parker Knight (sheriff deputy and all in all good guy) wants to know. There are good and bad feels, suspense, lots of angst, a few laughs and a little romance all getting us to the happy so far ending of this book… This is a continuing story which is not one of my favorites… the next book is Security Risk in August 1019.
