An awkward girl’s account of inexperience, sexual mishaps, and too much tequila…Needing a change, Rayne Meyers—a.k.a. Calamity Rayne—sets out to be a personal assistant for one of the wealthiest families in the world. What could possibly go wrong? Inexperienced with sophisticated settings, she does her best not to screw things up too severely, except there’s one complication she didn’t … one complication she didn’t foresee—her boss’s devastatingly charming son, Hale Davenport.
Hale is everything Rayne is not. He’s experienced, mature, and methodical about every part of his life. But when he meets his father’s new assistant, a woman nothing like the calculating females he’s used to, he is captivated and prepared to throw caution to the wind. Turns out, slightly awkward and sometimes silly sex might be exactly what his love life’s been missing and everything his heart didn’t see coming.

This is the first book in the Gets a Life Series, a Romantic Comedy. This book is a GEM! Rayne is a fantastic character, full of sass, talkative, and spontaneous. Her inner voice is hilarious. I need a friend like her in my life! Hale is handsome, enigmatic, and caring. Their chemistry is undeniably sizzling. Remington, Hale’s father, is commanding, and demanding. The storyline is beautifully written, hilarious and emotional. The story ends with a cliffhanger and I can’t wait to listen to Back Again, the next book in the Series. Ashley Trumpler is a new narrator to me. She did a fantastic job with the narration. Her performance is outstanding. I enjoyed this audiobook, and I highly recommend it.
Fantastic for fans of Penny Reid’s rom-coms!
Audiobook version: 5 stars overall, 5 stars story, 5 stars narration
Move over, quirky rom-com heroines! Rayne beats them all. She is funny, witty, silly, intelligent, socially awkward, and snarky. What a lovable, hilarious character who is strangely relatable. This is in my top 3 favorite rom-coms ever. The story is constantly amusing and sometimes surprising. I am really impressed with the writing, which rivals and surpasses that of the most famous rom-com writers today. There is a cliffhanger, but that just makes me happy that there will be another Calamity Rayne book to look forward to. This book gave me 12 full hours of awesome entertainment. I highly recommend this to all rom-com fans, especially to fans of Penny Reid. This audiobook has a similar type of adorkable heroine and a similar amount of drama among the laughs as in “The Hooker and the Hermit” and “Neanderthal Seeks Human”, but I love this one more than those books.
The heroine Rayne Meyers just turned 30 and is sort of a mess. Now, she has the bright idea of becoming a personal assistant to someone rich so that she can get a taste of luxury and jump-start her dead-end life in Oregon. Her clever best friend actually finds her such a dream job, and Rayne starts a grand adventure being a PA to a cranky old guy on a yacht trip! A regular woman on a yacht trip with the rich and famous is my idea of a fun setting for a book. The old guy’s charming son, Hale, is surprisingly attracted to Rayne. Hale is sexy, funny, thoughtful, patient, and really hot in the bedroom. I really love how he sees something special and sexy in Rayne. Their chemistry is red hot, and the book is very steamy.
The narrator, Ashley Trumpler, is superlative! I am surprised that this is only her second audiobook. She expertly switches from Rayne’s quirky inner monologues to Hale’s super sexy male voice to his dad’s cranky but cultured accent. Every character’s voice is perfect and distinctive, and she brings the book vibrantly to life. Ashley Trumpler is a narrator to watch for. I am blown away by her sense of humor and her sheer talent.

A Wonderfully Delightful RomCom! Fabulous Listen
Calamity Rayne: Gets a Life
By: Lydia Michaels
Narrated by: Ashley Trumpler
I loved this book, the story is entertaining and captivated my attention from start to end. Lydia Michaels is a gifted author, this is my fourth of hers and it was great to see another side of her creative mind. In addition to some great humor and witty banter and dialogue it contains a lot of heart. The characters are likable, easy to relate to and connect with. Rayne Meyers became one of my favorite characters, she was a train wreck at times, had no filter at other times, an honest and good person. She winds up taking a job that takes her out of her comfort zone due to her lack of experience, not only job wise but life wise too. But she wings it and tries to make it work, but her boss, Remington Davenport, is not the nicest person or the easiest to get along with but Rayne does not let that get to her. And then there is his some, Hale Davenport, a good looking charmer. Hale had the wrong impression about her at first but she turned out to be nothing like he thought. I loved these two together, they were so different from each other, worlds apart in so many ways, yet they were perfect together and for each other. While we do see parts of Hale’s human side I felt she brought more of that out of him. I even like the bond Rayne developed with Remington, though I can not say he had much of a human side, LOL. This book is an enjoyable delight, the story is beautifully plotted and there is never a dull moment. There is drama, humor, heartfelt and emotional moments and a charming romance. Lydia Michaels, thank you for this wonderful story, I loved where you took these characters with the continual growth throughout the story. I am looking forward to what comes next for them and hope the books comes to Audible soon.
I listened to the Audible edition, Ashley Trumpler was the perfect narrator to bring these characters and their story to life. She does an awesome job portraying the characters, humanizing them, giving each their own voice and personality. She sets the perfect tone for the story and handles the witty dialogue with ease. You could hear how much heart she puts into her work as she captures the characters emotions and projects them into her performance. She is an entertaining storyteller and a pleasure to listen to. Thank you for the great listen

This book had me giggling quite a few times with Rayne’s antics and the fact that she just can’t get out of her head. I think this may be one of my favorite characters I have read so far this year and after the way this book ended I really hope the next will be soon.
This book had me in fits of laughter and could not put it down! It has such a beautiful story line to it, gives you all the right feels!
Calamity Rayne is a hot mess and completely relatable to me. I love her issues and quirks and Hale is perfect. I was shocked by some of the plot twists and I loved how they were handled. I have such a book hangover and I can’t wait to read the next book.
Oh boy, how did I know that Calamity Rayne: Gets A Life would end in a cliffhanger. The good news is I have Calamity Rayne #2 on my kindle now and it will be published on November 28th so not too long of a wait now.
Rayne is a waitress and is ready to change her life. Rayne is a bit of a “Calamity” (disaster), hence the name of the book. She ends up taking a position as a Personal Assistant to a very wealthy Remington Davenport, Hale’s father. Rayne does start to come into her own by the end of the book. And, it is fun to see the changes.
I loved reading Calamity Rayne: Gets A Life – Rayne Meyer is 30 years old and finally having her sexual awakening. She has never really been interested in sex but Hale Davenport will change all that. I love the smutty poetry.
“Hello, my name is Rayne Meyers, and I really like sex. Really. Dr. Seuss could have written smutty poetry about me. I did it in a car and on a bar. I did it on the floor and by a door. I did it here and there. I did it everywhere!”
Calamity Rayne is an enjoyable book to read with some LOL moments. I look forward to reading Calamity Rayne #2.
I got this copy of Calamity Rayne on Kindle Unlimited and I give it 5 stars.
This is a laugh out loud roller coaster ride of emotions!! Rayne is very relatiable character—she’s a mess! Most of us women-folk have been in the exact station in life she’s in!!! Well, in her attempt to change her life, all sorts of shenanigans begin! This book is very funny but it also soul-searching too!?! I highly recommend reading this!!
