Love, courage, and commitment take center stage as the Carsons, a family of time travelers, continue their saga in the great American West. For the Carson children, ages 19 to 29, an unplanned stop in 1962 is a chance to grow. Adam, Greg, and Natalie begin lives with new spouses in Boulder, Colorado, while twins Cody and Caitlin get their first taste of college. All plan to resume the search for … search for their missing parents as soon as they can.
For Tim and Caroline Carson, a planned stop in the rendezvous year of 1972 is a nightmare. While reading about their children’s lives in 1962, they learn that one has crossed paths with a killer. Faced with limited options, they race back to the past to reroute history and prevent a series of murders.
In CAITLIN’S SONG, the fourth novel in the Carson Chronicles series, members of a modern family find romance, adventure, and terror as they seek answers and each other in four memorable eras of American history.

Liked it so much, I read all the books in the series.
Great book
I haven’t finished it yet and right now I am at a very disturbing part. These time travel books involving the Carson family are excellent. I have no idea how this is going to turn out and I am pretty good at guessing, but boy not this time.
Can the Carson family lay low long enough to get to 1983?
Caitlin’s Song by John A. Heldt is an intriguing book as we find ourselves gaining knowledge that we know hasn’t happened yet for these characters. The Carson clan is in two different years throughout the entire storyline and has to figure out a ton of things that could help or not help them in the long run.
What I liked:
• Caitlin is the main focus on the Carson siblings in this one. She is a great character that has grown since the first book. Caitlin is also my favorite character.
• The siblings all being in Colorado. It was nice to see Colorado in the sixties through their eyes.
• The parents being on two missions. I can’t precisely say what one of them is but the other is still to reunite with their ever-growing family.
• Some scenes, when we follow Cody, are hilarious.
What I didn’t like
The first thing that I didn’t like was that a sibling got murdered. That was just so terrifying. Another dislike is the way that Natalie reacted to the news that the twins gave her. I dislike the way that a fraternity member was trying to get Cody to join their fraternity. Then there is the way that Molly acted at times to the twins and telling on Caitlin to Vince.
Five Stars
Caitlin’s Song by John A. Heldt is a marvelous book about finding love, having an adventure, and learning about new opportunities, along with many more things. The Carson family had their ups and downs in here, but they made it to another year. They are now one step closer to finding their parents and heading home. To which year, we have no clue.
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy from the author. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

Caitlin’s Song focuses on Caitlin in the 4th book of the series, but as with the other books, John breaks the story up from multiple Carson family points of view to give the readers a complete picture. Caitlin is still trying to find her place after the loss of Casey. Her family is still trying to reconnect with their parents after almost 2 years of chasing them through time. They were able to connect with Nick’s uncle Jack and he’s worked to get the twins into college, which will be a great distraction for Caitlin, and perhaps she might meet someone new.
Who knew time travel was so tricky? After two years, they’ve definitely realized what a mess this has all become, but the Carson’s don’t let those complications stop them from trying to connect their family. They’ve also got some extras they’ve picked up along the way that they want their parents to meet. I’ve always liked Caitlin, she’s strong and incredibly smart.
I think all the children have grown incredibly through this journey. The storyline is ever-growing and completely engaging, which keeps it fresh and exciting. The characters are well-developed and they all play important roles in each other’s books. There’s just the right amount of suspense to keep you on edge. A truly fun read.
good series
The Carson Family time travel saga continues. The 5 siblings with the people they have picked up on their travels are still looking for their parents–and their parents are still looking for them! They just keep missing each other and it has been almost 2 years now. Each new time period brings new, exciting and sometimes dangerous experiences.
It’s Caitlin’s turn. They are in 1962 and staying with the relatives of one of the others. These are darling people and you will grow to love them even as the Carson’s did and I did. Caitlin and her twin Cody get the chance to go to college for a semester. It is an experience neither of them will forget!
Meanwhile their parents are still searching and come upon information that Caitlin is dead and buried. They decide to try and stop what happened by interfering with the time line. They are both devastated that they might have lost their baby! What they end up doing will astonish you–they don’t think it worked–
This is a clean and sometimes heart rending series with plenty of laughs as well. Will these kids ever find their parents. Will the parents ever get to see their kids again along with their spouses and of course the grandchildren–It sounds like they might be getting closer. It will take at least 1 more novel in this series to find out for sure.
I have read the other 3 in this series and do recommend that they are read in sequence although they could be read as stand alone as well. You know that I will be waiting with bated breathe for Book 5 in this series!!
I received this book from the author for my enjoyment and the possibility of a review-All opinions are my own!
I received the book for a fair review. I have been following the family since River Rising, now I am jumping for joy for book 4. I am in love with Cailtin’s Song, because it is different from the last 3. That is so Caitlin though, ever one who breaks the mould of things. This book is first to have two distinctly different story lines, apart from the normal. Clearly in the book, the whole theme is about actions and consequences. The two separate stories tell us that much, and the ending reinforces. I think, while this might not be full of historical tidbits (not as much) or as fun. The romance is sweet, what held on to me most is the parent’s adventure. Hence, this book resonates to me more, perhaps I have kids myself? Overall, Caitlin’s Song is now my favourite story of them all. Mainly the shine of their parent’s love, highlighting the reason why the children are willing to go such lengths to reunite the family.
CAITLIN’S SONG is the fourth instalment in John A Heldt’s adult, historical, time-travel series focusing on the Carson siblings-Adam, Natalie, Greg, Cody and Caitlin. CAITLIN’S SONG can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty although I recommend reading the series in order for backstory and cohesion.
SOME BACKGROUND: The Carson Chronicles focuses on the Carson siblings, a family of time travellers, as they search for their missing parents Tim and Caroline Carson. Months earlier, the siblings discovered their parents had disappeared but an itinerary of places and timelines found the family on a journey of their own. Starting in 2017, the siblings travelled back in time to 1889, 1918, the tumultuous era of 1943-44, and presently in 1962 where the Cuban Missile Crisis is about to unfold.
Told from several third person perspectives CAITLIN’S SONG follows the Carson siblings to 1962, an unplanned time jump from 1942 that follows in the wake of potential disaster and a near death experience, but a time jump that brings the siblings up close and personal with family members they met in the past. Struggling to settle into life in 1962, Cody and Caitlin would enrol in college, where Caitlin will fall in love with a young man who is willing to give up everything he knows to experience life in the future; while Greg and his wife Patricia anticipate a new addition to the Carson brood.
Meanwhile Tim and Caroline Carson jump to 1972 where life as they know is about to unravel. Hoping to change history, our couple jumps back to 1941 in an effort to prevent disaster from destroying their family, and the people they love.
CAITLIN’S SONG is a complex, clever and engaging story of fictionalized history wherein the Carson family re-examines and experiences life they could have never imagined. John A Heldt journeys into the past as the close-knit Carson family battles between the present and a time not so long ago; the future and the unknown. Whispered secrets threaten the outcome of the Cuban Missile Crisis, as one family must consider whether to go back to the future, or travel in time to the past. CAITLIN’S SONG begins slowly as the sibling settle into 1962 but picks up steam as their lives begin to merge with a time period that threatened the peace and harmony of a struggling world.
