What a hoot this contemporary cozy mystery was! We have all been there. A day where if something can go wrong it will no matter how hard we try! But to be taken outside of your comfort zone could only make it worse it!
Jessica is on her way to Ecuador for a month long vacation that her family planned for her. Nothing goes as planned as flights are delayed and then her backpack is purloined by another passenger! Trying to convince the customs agent it was hers wasn’t easy after the delinquent showed where her tattoo was to try to prove it belonged to her. Running to make her final flight and having to check her carry-on just added to her stress levels. It was not boding well for the rest of trip! Needless to say, things go from bad to worse but she is warmly welcomed by friends of her parents when she finally reaches her destination. What happens after that will leave you breathless trying to keep up with the 60+ grandmother and aunt who try to help Jessica solve the murder mystery. Oh yes, they were definite trouble!
The dialogue, humor, descriptions, characterizations and the food brought this book to life! I felt myself chuckling throughout and the scenes of taking a shower, or trying to, were hilarious. I must say that Jessica held it together better than I would have. There was no moment where this story lagged. It was snappy, fast-paced and you know the location is real. It was almost as if the author herself had some of these experiences. I must say, I loved the references made to Joan Wilder and Romancing the Stone along with Credance Clearwater Revival.
I highly recommend this new venture by one of my favourite authors!
I did receive an ARC of this book for an honest review.
Loved this book it was fun and Jessica is so realistically portrayed as an American out of her element. Following her adventures as she arrives in Ecuador and becomes embroiled in a murder investigation was a pure delight. Jessica is a wonderful character, however, the elderly sisters steal the show. They put Jessica into situations that interfere with the police investigation and make themselves look guilty too. How do you keep out of trouble when you don’t speak the language and have no idea of how the populace lives? A fun and entertaining book you need to add to your TBR pile.
What a fun romp through the Equadorian town of Banos! Jessica’s family insisted she go to Banos to spend a month vacationing with her mom’s old friend. Immediately upon arrival, Jessica becomes embroiled in a murder mystery. This is a wonderful comedy mystery story. If the editing had been better, I would gave given it a full 5 stars!
This was a fun book packed full of humor. It started out with a bang and just kept going. It held my interest, not just because of the humor, but also because the characters were likable and the story kept me guessing. I didn’t figure out the “bad guy”until it was revealed.
I’m giving it 2 Stars because I really like the beginning, but then it seemed to get too silly by the half-way mark. The Grandma, Aunt and Jessica were funny at first but then they just got ridiculous and too unbelievable.
I still would have probably finished the story but then the author started in extolling the virtues of Greenpeace and I had to stop. There are good environmental groups who do good work in the world, and then there are the fanatics who act more like terrorist. I don’t need to waste my time reading about them.
I could not get enough had to buy all the books in the Cozy Mystery series after this book I was hooked
