Sometimes authors and book series come along, and you feel an almost cosmic shift of connection and belonging – and that happened to me with the first Away From Keyboard novel. This is the fifth in that series, and, while it is perfect as a standalone, the characters have become friends, so reconnecting with them is part of the pleasure of reading the book. I genuinely didn’t believe Patricia Eddy could top Second Sight and Dax’s story, but I was wrong. By Lethal Force is Ford’s story – harrowing, heartbreaking, exciting, suspenseful, and ultimately satisfying. Ford and Joey are real people that come alive on the pages; Joey’s fear of people makes the reader jump back when someone approaches her unexpectedly. The time overlaps with Dax’s story, which adds a layer of context and excitement if you’ve read Second Sight too. The “lethal force” of the title is a reminder of the evil that the characters face and that Eddy’s characters will continue to fight. I hated having this book end, and I can’t wait for the next.
I was a little nervous about this book, to be honest. I had been simultaneously waiting impatiently, yet dreading it. I knew going into it there were going to be things I didn’t like, but at the same time I was just so eager for Ford’s story. Ms. Eddy did not disappoint. She brought everything together in a way that made me love these two characters even more. I have a thing for scarred characters and this author does them beautifully. And the ending? Hang on to your knickers, cuz it’s a doozy! If you haven’t read the rest of the series – take off of work, hire a babysitter, tell your significant other to fend for themselves for dinner – and start at the beginning, you won’t regret it.
