Dominic was staring at me like he couldn’t decide whether to chop me into pieces or pull my hair and French kiss me.
Dominic
I got her fired. Okay, so I’d had a bad day and took it out on a bystander in a pizza shop. But there’s nothing innocent about Ally Morales. She proves that her first day of her new job… in my office… after being hired by my mother.
So maybe her colorful, annoying, … colorful, annoying, inexplicably alluring personality brightens up the magazine’s offices that have felt like a prison for the past year. Maybe I like that she argues with me in front of the editorial staff. And maybe my after-hours fantasies are haunted by those brown eyes and that sharp tongue.
But that doesn’t mean that I’m going to be the next Russo man to take advantage of his position. I might be a second-generation asshole, but I am not my father.
She’s working herself to death at half a dozen dead-end jobs for some secret reason she doesn’t feel like sharing with me. And I’m going to fix it all. Don’t accuse me of caring. She’s nothing more than a puzzle to be solved. If I can get her to quit, I can finally peel away all those layers. Then I can go back to salvaging the family name and forget all about the dancing, beer-slinging brunette.
Ally
Ha. Hold my beer, Grumpy Grump Face.
Author’s Note: A steamy, swoony workplace romantic comedy with a grumpy boss hero determined to save the day and a plucky heroine who is starting to wonder if there might actually be a beating heart just beneath her boss’s sexy vests.

When I went looking for a romantic comedy author to read, Lucy Score’s name came up numerous times and was highly recommended. Her RomCom, By A Thread, did not disappoint. Lucy made the hero and heroine come alive on the pages within the glamorous world of high fashion. Dominic, the hero is a hurt rich guy who falls deeply for Ally, who is so darn cute and fun, I’d fall for her myself if I met her in real life.
The best part of the story is the humor Lucy adds. She’s funny and spot on with her comedy, which makes Ally likable due to the humor mainly coming from her character. But the supporting staff chime in with fun puns. Dominic also has his fair share of one-liners.
This is a real steamy story, so beware, but I believe readers of Lucy Score have come to expect this level of heat. The author handles the sex very well with intense passion while striking on the emotions. But oh boy, have a fan ready.
I look forward to reading more of Lucy Score’s romance books.
Lucy is always my go-to for romance when I need a laugh, and this book has become one of my favorites. Grumpy boss is my favorite trope, and she hit it out of the park with By A Thread. I luv this book so much.
Holy cow, this is a long book. Don’t get me wrong, I loved every bit of it but it felt like some fat could’ve been trimmed off. Shaving off half a star for it, so it’s a 4.5/5 for me!
Aside from that, I genuinely love how Score’s books get more and more absurd with each new release. If you’re looking for a realistic story, Rock Bottom Girl is fantastic and is as close to reality as you can get. This? Not so much. I could totally understand how the implausibility/shtick-y tone could drive readers away, but for me, it worked.
It’s basically Score’s version of The Devil Meets Prada, which is a cutthroat, unforgivable world I’m grateful to not be apart of but secretly love reading about whenever I get the chance. The heroine is so independent and kickass, albeit frustratingly stubborn at times, that it’s hard to root against her. Would love a follow up to this, even if it’s a novella!
Laugh out loud funny at times with strong women overcoming challenges.
I just loved this book!
Even though I write instalove whenever anyone asks me which book is my favorite, this is the one that immediately pops into my head! I love it! It was so funny that I had my husband staring at me while I cracked up over and over again!
BY A THREAD is another Lucy Score’s book that will make you laugh right out of the chair. I wholeheartedly agree with her author’s note: A steamy, swoony workplace romantic comedy with a grumpy boss hero determined to save the day and a plucky heroine who is starting to wonder if there might actually be a beating heart just beneath her boss’s sexy vests. Lucy Score is queen of wit, humor, and sassy comebacks! Brace yourself for the battle of the sexes. Woo!
Ally is my type of heroine! She is a badass strong woman that can save herself. She is a hard working loyal daughter that comes home to help her father who has dementia. She has to work 4-5 jobs just to pay for the home her dad is in, and on top of that she has to fix up her father’s run down house in her spare time. The moments that we see Ally with her father are touching. (I literally sobbed while reading these parts. Lucy, you sure know how to make your characters soo real!)
Dominic is a true alpha-hole! He tries hard to stay unemotional because he feels guilty and responsible for the bad things his father had done. He leaves his job to help his mother fix the mess his father did at the magazine that his mother started.
After getting her fired from her job, his mother hires her and they are thrown together. I loved the way we watched as Dominic showed his true softer caring side as he interacted with Ally. He started out being drawn to her feistiness and he couldn’t stop thinking and wanting to see her. He didn’t want to give into his feelings for her because he didn’t want to be like his father. (Which he was totally not!)
I fell in love with Dom. He thought he was just like his father, but he was sooo much better than he thought he was. I couldn’t put this masterpiece down. The characters were soo well written and lovable. I loved the way Dom grew through the story and how he showed Ally that he truly loved and cared for her. I didn’t want this story to end! I devoured it!
All I can say is my heart! Ally’s dad…I cried…every time she talked about him, went to see him, I just bawled! (my grandfather who I lived with growing up had Alzheimer’s and I thought of him.)
There is just soo much love and thought that Lucy puts into this book. It is just EVERYTHING! Dom, just WOW! It’s like Lucy gets better, but she’s awesome always, how does she get better? LOVE LOVE LOVED it!
I read all of her books. They make me laugh, bring me to tears, want to go and visit and maybe never leave these places.
This book was much longer than most of the romance novels I read, but the story was well done and rarely dragged despite being nearly 600 pages. I picked this one up because I was curious about the whole “grumpy hero” trope I kept hearing about. Dominic certainly qualifies as grumpy, but I really liked him. I guess grumpy is sort of a gentler version of a bad boy or cocky alpha (both of which are romance heroes I strongly dislike). I’m also not a fan of enemies to lovers which this kind of was, but Ally gave as good as she got from Dominic so this worked for me. I really hate when the heroine turns into a blushing, stammering mess around a cocky jerk and that did NOT happen here. This was a steamy, sexy romance between two strong-willed if stubborn people and I found it highly entertaining. The characters were complex and multi-dimensional, which made this a satisfyingly emotional, funny, sexy read.
I really enjoyed this book.
It was funny, sweet, romantic and full of witty banter.
Dominic and Ally hated one another but couldn’t seem to stay away from eachother.
This is a slow burn romance as Dominic tries to deny the attraction he has towards Ally because she was forbidden fruit. She had been hired by his mother to work for their company and work place relationships was a NO GO.!!..Because of something what his father had done.
There is so much more to this story and it is a fabulous ride to take,I Loved reading the way Ally and Dominic turned hate to Love.
An amazing read that I highly recommend oh and drunk Dom is the BEST..lol..
5 incredible Stars.
My first 5 star read in… Well I can’t remember the last time I gave a book 5 stars! This book by Lucy Score has EVERYTHING you could want in a book, Emotions happy and sad, love, family, fantastic characters, a great storyline, grumpy alpha boss, amazing female lead ( who does whatever it takes to help her dad) and an adorable dog named Brownie! THE first chapter when Allie and Dominic first meet, I knew I had to read this book (pepperoni words!) If the book continued to get better than the opening, I knew it was going to brillant! And it was!! I laughed, teared up, smacked my forehead and I wanted to smack Dominic like ally and Faith did! But I also swooned, my heart broke for all the pressure and responsibilities placed on Dominick from a very young age. A parents one main job is to love, cherish and protect their child. Dom’s dad did NOT do that! He was a creepy, scumbag, predator that deserved to get everything returned to him 10 times over! B@$t@®d!! Bottom line this book was perfect! I absolutely adored Ally and her dad, my greatest fear! You’ll have to read the book to find out. Buy this book, get it free with K.U. Whichever your buying preference, but get this book!!!!!
By a Thread by Lucy Score is a slow-burn, contemporary, enemies-to-lovers, workplace romantic comedy told in first person, dual point of view.
When Dominic takes his temper out on a pizza server, getting her fired, the last thing he expects is for his mother to hire the mouthy waitress as one of his employees. He doesn’t expect to enjoy fighting with her so much, and he certainly doesn’t expect the growing attraction he feels as they work together. But Dom’s her boss, and unlike his father, he refuses to take advantage of his position.
Ally can’t believe her bad luck. She’s been working multiple jobs to make ends meet, and now some rich, entitled jerk gets her fired. When his mother offers her a position at the world’s second-largest fashion magazine, she jumps at the chance. Ally desperately needs this job, and her grumpy new boss keeps trying to make her quit, but she can handle it. If only the grouch wasn’t so sexy.
I loved Dom and Ally’s story. The snarky banter and pranks were so much fun! Ally was hardworking, strong and sassy. I loved how she refused to take any crap from Dom or let him push her around. Dom had a crusty exterior, and came across like a selfish jerk, but as the story progressed we got to see him become vulnerable, showing his softer, more caring side. A sexy, emotional, funny, heartfelt story. Highly recommended!
This story took me on a journey of these two. This has been on my TBR for a while. Not sure why I think I was scared of the 14hr listening time and wasn’t sure when to commit to it. I ran across it and read the synopsis again and remembered that’s it’s an office romance with some dirty secrets. (My fav!)So I cued it up and did not regret it. I laughed, teared up..got furious(more than once) and just was happy to watch and see what would happen with these two.
4.5 Stars
Dominic kept his grumpy heart hidden in shell. He did what he could to keep love at bay. But despite Ally’s sheer contempt, he just couldn’t stay away.
This book was so good! I loved the dynamic of the characters. They were well developed. I looked forward to their journey with each turning page.
This is the first book I’ve read by Lucy Score, but it won’t be the last. A great story with memorable characters and a swoon-worthy grumpy boss of a hero. I highly recommend for anyone who needs a little bit of romantic comedy in their lives. And isn’t that all of us right now?
By A Thread was such a fun read, I enjoyed it a lot. I laughed a lot, belly aching laughter and I was in love with the story and the characters. So worth the time I spent reading/ listening to this book. Five beautiful stars.
You can’t go wrong with one of Lucy Score’s romance books. This was one of my favorite of hers!
My first Lucy Score book and I’m hooked. The humor was good, but even more so, one of the subplots grabbed me by the heart and twisted my emotions. And the romance…hot and entertaining and delicious!
I FREAKIN LOVE EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS BOOK!!
Don’t let the page count on this one scare you away. I assure it’s worth every single word! That slow burn, the wickedly hilarious and tension-filled banter…the (ahem) climax when that burn finally erupts. WOW. I’m so blown away by this book. I’m officially obsessed with these characters and the storyline (for a million different reasons). I’ve never laughed out loud so many times while reading one book (the drunk scene…dear lord, that had me reeling!). But not only that, I even swiped a few rogue tears toward the end…didn’t see that coming!
Everything I love about reading just smacked me right in the face and I’m not even sorry that I’m up way past my bedtime and will regret it tomorrow. I can’t believe it took me this long to read a Lucy Score novel. I’m officially obsessed and about to read every last one.
