This is every womans worst nightmare. The worst kind of betrayal. A subject that none of us like to acknowledge and Penelope doesn’t mince words when it comes to the shock of experiencing the depravity that is all around us. This is one womans tale of survival and awakening. I couldn’t put it down.
She owed a debt and every good action would earn her a button, and she only owed 365 buttons to earn her freedom.
I have been wanting to start this series for a while now. I have all of the books sitting on my Kindle. So, I decided to dive in. I haven’t read a good dark romance in a while, so I thought I would finally give this one a go.
As I am sitting here thinking about my words for this review, I am a little conflicted. This story is definitely dark. There are parts of it that are very unique to the plot I haven’t come across before. However, the main gist of it is very similar to other books written around the same time it was written. Over all, on the plot itself, I felt a little jilted. I was hoping for something completely different.
Sticking with the plot. I can only read so many books with a dominating male who is into BDSM so many times. These books can get repetitive and unoriginal. I hate to say that that is how I felt about this one. Although the coming together of these characters is unique in its own, the characters themselves are a dime a dozen in my opinion.
I can admit that I breezed through this book. I will most likely pick up the next book soon to see where the progression of this story ends up going. I am curious to see what ends up playing out with these characters.
This book is definitely a dark book. It’s not for everyone. If you are looking for sweet, this is not a book for you. While the sex scenes are dark, they are hot. But be prepared if you are the type that likes cookie cutter stories. This will not come close to that. Those that like the darker themes, will more than likely enjoy the opener to this series. For me, it was okay. Hoping for a little more with the next one.
I like this series but this is a darker edgier love story.

~~ 4.5 Scintillating Stars! ~~
Really enjoyed this dark, torrid and tantalizingly twisty first installment in the Buttons series by Penelope Skye!
Wowza! Pearl was a true warrior with a backbone of STEEL and her ferocity and bravery in the face of her harrowing ordeal was awe-inspiring!
And sighhhh….Crow, her sexy as sin captor, imprisoned my heart! His rough dominance coupled with his aching tenderness and innate chivalry was a heady combination! And together he and Pearl were electrifying!!!!
These two were fire and ice and brought out the best and worst in each other!!!! Their chemistry was off the charts, their erotic interludes deliciously wanton, and I loved the currency exchange that set the stage for the origins of their PRICELESS love story.
Cannot wait for the second installment, Buttons and Hate!
Impossible to put down. Dark and twisted! Couldn’t stop reading. Full of action and sexy scenes. Yum!
I’ve read all of her books love them all highly recommend all of her work
This was an enjoyable read from start to finish. I appreciate the author’s mixing of action, romance, and some pretty dark themes. There are some very dark scenes and it is not for the faint of heart. In all, it’s a good series starter and I would recommend it to anyone interested.
When I started reading I couldn’t put it Penelope Sky is magnifysent writer.I cannot wait to read more of there books.Keep up the great work. You should definitely read this books.
Beware, possible spoilers ahead!
Overall Rating:
4/5 Stars. I basically read this book in one sitting. I was captivated by this book. There’s just something about dark romances that I’m obsessed with. I couldn’t put this book down and I can’t wait to stick my nose into the next one.
TW: Abuse, sexual abuse, kidnapping, rape and murder.
I’m not going to lie, this book is very similar to Tears Of Tess, but I think that’s why I loved this book so much. I finally found a dark romance that’s close to what I already love.
Plot Rating:
Seeing as this book is similar to my all-time favorite series, I love the plot.
Pearl, aka Button, gets kidnapped and sold into sexual slavery. She’s sold to a monster called Bones. She’s made to do despicable things with him. That is, until she’s “saved” by Crow. Crow is almost like Bones, but better.
Obviously, they have more attraction to each other or there wouldn’t be a story.
Character Rating:
I love Pearl. She’s such a strong character and she won’t let anyone break her. I love that there’s such a strong main character. And I love that even though her body’s been through so much, she’s able to find such enjoyment with Crow.
Crow is the just the person that she needs. He’s definitely hiding something and I’m eager to find out what it is. I can’t wait to see his character grow to love Button.
I hate his brother though. Cane is such a douche and I really hope either Button or Crow kills him off.
Writing Style:
This is my first book I’ve read by PS and I really enjoyed her writing style. It was so easy to read and I never got lost or confused once. Her writing is captivating. She really knows how to keep you drawn to the book!
Loved it
That even though it is fictional so much of it could be true as there are alot of those types in the world today . And I hope that in the future of Pearl she gets to get even with those whom she trusted and ruined her life .Hopling that Crow will not be one of them..
While I enjoyed the book, it is very dark so it probably won’t be something that I go back and reread. If you like dark, this will be right up your alley-it was just a little too dark for me.
