It’s true. I’m not what most people would call “pretty” and, well, high school was rough. Fast forward ten years and life is good… league.
But then he kisses me. And we totally forget the room, the crowd, everything.
Then he tells everyone we’ve been dating for months.
Soon everything starts to feel too real, from adorable fights over “necessary” tools to fix my broken porch to surviving a free-for-all dinner with his six siblings to picking up where our last kiss left off.
But there’s something he’s not telling me about why he’s really hanging around, and I’m pretty sure it has to do with my mob-connected brothers.
Because this is not a make-over story, and Cinderella is only a fairy tale…

This is my first book by Avery Flynn and I absolutely enjoyed it. I’ll definitely be reading more of her books. That’s for sure.
Not everybody can be a beauty queen,a runway model. That’s just life. Gina isn’t one of them either. In her eyes she is less than average, undateable to be precise.
Throw in the right guy, who really sees you, adores you and you have a more than average love story, a special love story. Every love story is unique and made just for you.
If you ever felt undateable, too ugly for love this is the story for you. In the eyes of the right person you’re more than beautiful, inside and out.
Sexy, sweet, sometimes heartbreaking story of a handsome cop falling for the ugly duckling daughter of a renowned crime family he’s assigned to get info on. Enjoyed the story, loved the audiobook narrators take on the characters & look forward to reading more from this first time for me author.
Not one of her best
I just didn’t find it funny. Girl with a nice body but ugly face. Sexy insecure police officer. I just wasn’t feeling it there was too much focus on looks and h big nose.
She has a great body…But Her Face. Butterface. Such a great premise. A man falling for a girl that might not be runway beautiful, but has personality for days.
I get she had self-confidence issues because of this, but the ridicule she received was a bit over the top, especially from Ford’s co-workers. These co-workers were policemen, shouldn’t they protect and serve instead of setting up pranks to mess with Gina? It just felt a bit over the top to me.
Ford did make up for because he was smitten from the start, but I felt pulled away from the story every time I was reminded of her face and not her awesome personality. It had a Howard Stern feel to it and I couldn’t get past it to truly enjoy the story.
Audible. There’s nothing amazing or incredibly original about this story, but it was a fun listen. Savannah Peachwood and Brian Pallino were terrific.
Ford is a detective with the local PD and Gina is a wedding planner with family ties to the mob. After an initial interaction implodes ~ Ford is ordered to get close to Gina in order to ascertain whether her brothers are up to no good. Ford falls for Gina. There’s the *big misunderstanding*/revealing of Ford’s omission of facts. A quick reconciliation. They get their HEA. Cute epilogue.
I agree with other reviewers that Gina’s looks, or lack thereof, are belabored to the level of annoyance. I get that it’s sort of the point of the story ~ but I wish it wouldn’t have been hammered in during every single chapter by every character.
This is a cute Audible Escape listen and I plan to continue with the series.
Loved that the heroine wasn’t a “Miss America” and she still gets her man!!!
I think Gina might be one of my favorite romantic leads! Butterface has an underlying message that I truly think everyone needs to hear and Gina delivers! To paraphrase “I deserve to be loved because of who I am, not is spite of it.”
Ford is the perfect foil for this story- mainly because of his in ability to express his feelings.
I really did think Ms Flynn handled this story very well. Not only are Gina and Ford characters that are easy to like, the sense of their true attraction to each other comes off the page and feels genuine.
If you have followed Ms Flynn’s previous works, you’ve meet the Hartigan family before, especially Ford’s sister Felicia. You will be glad to see her and the rest of the siblings make appearances here as key secondary cast.
As this is the first “Hartigan” boom – I am hoping we see glimpses of Gina and Ford going forward.
The premise of this romance is disturbing. The heroine has been a victim of hellacious bullying about her looks … It’s just not done well.
It was refreshing to read a book about someone who is not a great beauty and finds love anyway.
This is a great story for those of us on the lower half of the popular / external beauty spectrum. Really enjoyed their struggles and the ending.
What could possibly go wrong when a straight laced cop falls for a wedding planner from a questionable family? A whole lot, that’s for sure. Can Gina get past her mistrust of men to let Ford in her heart? Can Ford break some rules to protect the woman he loves? This was a really great story! I have loved all of the books that I have read by Avery Flynn so far.
The woman who thinks she is an ugly duckling discovers she’s a swan in the eyes of the man who loves her. First she has to get past believing the cruel remarks aimed at her growing up and trust that the gorgeous man really does love her.
Avery Flynn is a new to me author and man oh man, did she deliver. Her characters are well developed, the story flows flawlessly, and she writes some of the best banter I’ve ever read. Her banter skills being right up there with Lauren Blakely. To say I was impressed is an understatement. I went into this book completely blind but came out a woman hellbent on reading more of this author’s work.

This is a story with a moral at its heart. As a book lover, it is one that I can definitely relate to – don’t judge a book by its cover.
I am really loving the Hartigan family! Prior to reading this, I read Muffin Top, the second book in The Hartigans series, and I loved it! I just adore the characters in this little fictional world. While I did enjoy Muffin Top more than Butterface, this is still a really wonderful book that I enjoyed very much.
What really makes this fictional world special is the incredible characters. I love the Hartigan family. I could read about their escapades all day long. I like that Flynn is able to beautifully capture the characters’ personalities, even the secondary and background characters that don’t get as much face time. She portrays the characters in a very straightforward way that really makes them feel real.
The romance in this story is very heartwarming. It isn’t without its heart-wrenching moments either, which really balances things out. I love the honesty of the romance and how it makes the story so much more palpable. The attraction between the characters was good, but at times I felt that there needed to be more spark. More in the way of romantic banter to ease into things. While their love didn’t necessarily feel forced at all, it felt very serious and direct.
As I mentioned in my review of Muffin Top, the world-building is on the smaller side of the spectrum. This is the thing about reading contemporaries that I am not used to. I primarily stick to fantasies that defy the laws of physics in their world-building. Contemporaries are just different. Since the story exists in a mirror image of the real world there is not as much to describe. All this considered, I felt that the world-building was adequate in the story. Not just in the physical locations in the story but in the perceptions of things. With regard to this book, things like police work, the physical attributes of a person, and societal norms and how they are interpreted.
This is a story that has a very emotional plot. While there is an overall plot going on that takes us through a series of events, the central plot revolves around a super hot police officer and a girl that society would consider ugly falling in love. So yeah, there was a lot of emotion inside the plot. It is geared toward emotions. The overall plot with the events that take place in the story was good but there were times that I felt things were dragging on. Though it might be that I was comparing it too closely to Muffin Top, which is a book that I couldn’t put down for a second.
Overall, this is a lovely story that was a joy to read. I am definitely addicted to the Hartigan family and this fictional world. I am eager to read the next book in this series and see what happens to Fallon and a bad boy hockey player. If adult contemporary romance if your thing then I definitely recommend this book! And even if it isn’t, you could take a chance on it like I did and fall in love with an emotionally charged story with a good moral underneath.
I forgot how much I liked romantic comedy! This was a fun read! I’m going on to muffintop next!
Gina, a wedding planner, is happy with her life plan. Happy that is until someone puts her face on a kiss cam with the best looking police sheriff in town, Ford, and he kisses her. Things further unravel when he then takes her to a crazy family dinner. Gina thinks he Ford is after her cranial . This is a funny romance.
I wasn’t sure about this book when I first started it but a little way in I was hooked. I loved the characters and wasn’t ready to let them go at the end. Avery Flynn has produced a wonderful series that I will read again and again.
Such a fun book! While it was a bit of a slow burn, the characters were a lot of fun. I’m going to have to check out more of this series because even the background characters were fun!
I absolutely have fallen in love with Ford and Gina’s story!
Butterface will make you think twice about how you see people from the outside instead of looking for the good within. We all have our doubts about ourselves but everyone has something about themselves they should be proud of.
This story allowed both Ford and Gina’s vulnerabilities to show yet they both had to learn some self acceptance and finally open up there hearts to love.
This was a cute story, I did enjoy it. The Characters came across as younger than what they were meant to be and that is why I only gave 3 stars as quite often I found myself thinking they were very immature for whom they were meant to be portraying. The audio book was done well.
