After a year of working as a tour guide in the swamps of Louisiana–and the day after a man’s body is found in a canal–former Police Chief Clint Wolf realizes he can’t stay away from law enforcement work forever. Ditching his paddle for a pistol, he rejoins the Mechant Loup Police Department, but this time as their chief investigator, and he works beside Police Chief Susan Wilson as they seek to … to solve the mystery in the canal.
While it isn’t odd to find drowned bodies floating in the vast waterways of Louisiana from time to time, it is unusual to find a body with six bullet holes in its back. This first case back for Clint won’t be a walk in the park, but a blue truck and a single piece of paper might be the key to everything. The only problem? The truck has seemingly vanished into thin air and no one can find the piece of paper.

This sounded like an ok mystery series to spend time with – I like the South for settings, with crocodiles, obnoxious characters and all. The writing is fine, even the editing ((although I would have caught this (to follow) and thrown it out immediately)), but the author just ruins it in the first couple of chapters of the book! OK, here goes: Body part found in swamp, cops, media on the scene. And among the latter is this female reporter, who one can tell is going to figure in the book as perhaps a love interest for the protagonist. Whatever her qualities, after the first couple of sentences out of her mouth, she comes across as a moron, and the obvious question is does the author really think one could get a job in reporting with a vocabulary the size of an ant? “Are you OK?” “Is he OK?” “Is he going to be OK?” “Are you doing OK?” (Hey, she knows “doing”!). I’m not kidding. That’s ALL she asks, obviously not worried about not being fired for failing to ask about the reason she’s on the scene in the first place (dead body in swamp). The protagonist has, like many of his colleagues, it in for media types, and I suspect the author was trying to introduce this particular reporter as a nice version of the species, but only managed to make her come across as an idiot. Anyway, I won’t find out, because I couldn’t read any farther.
Good crime fiction that keeps you guessing until the end and then what a surprise! A little hard to follow but enjoyed the read.
I love the characters in these books!
I’ve read the first four books in this series and liked all four. I look forward to the next two.
I have read two of his series. Enjoyed them both.

I like this series. Characters are believable, as is plot. Moves along quickly
Excellent writing, very enjoyable to read, great story that kept me guessing. I plan to read every book this author has written. They are so good.
Didnt like or finish.
One of the better ones I have read lately
I like this series a lot. Just bought the next one! Would recommend.
Excellent – I’ve found a new author to follow!
Good read
I enjoyed this book because its characters and plot were engaging enough to keep my interest from beginning to end. My only only problem with it concerns the ending. It was one of those books that elicits images of the author thinking, “OMG, I gotta wrap this baby up!” because some literary source told them books should be no longer than X number of pages or the world would end or some such thing. As written, too much happens too fast at the end of the book because of a lack of sufficient plot and character development during the text. As a result, although the ending made sense, I found it unfulfilling.
Great read!!
This is part of the Clint Wolf series, and just as well writtten as the prior books. The characters are realistic, the story flows well, and the plot has a few twists. While I’m not a fan of flashbacks, the ones in this story were minimal and filled out the plot. If you like detective stories that twist their way to a solution, you’ll enjoy this book.
I have never been able to wrap my mind around sociopathic minds. This book helped me to realize how twisted the truth can be to people with such a mind. May none of us ever experience someone such as the villain in this book in our real lives.
Love Bourg’s books
Good read. Not predictable
Great book
