Then she’s kidnapped by Connor “Mad” Rogan—a darkly tempting billionaire with equally devastating powers. Torn between wanting to run and wanting to surrender to their overwhelming attraction, Nevada must join forces with Rogan to stay alive.
Rogan’s after the same target, so he needs Nevada. But she’s getting under his skin, making him care about someone other than himself for a change. And, as Rogan has learned, love can be as perilous as death, especially in the magic world.

Brilliant Authors. Love all of their books.
Finding a good Urban-Paranormal fantasy is hard that does not revolve around vamps, wolves and angels with good written female characters, if you are looking for a series like not this, Hidden Legacy is a great find in that genre.
Nevada Baylor is living lie-detector, she runs family owed P.I business. They are a small agency, but she is coaxed into handling a high profile and challenging case, to bring in an unpredictable suspect. He is a Prime – person with maximum level of magic, a fire mage, his fire can burn hot enough to melt metal.
She knows this case is above her pay-grade and dangerous, but she has no other option to take it otherwise she will lose her business which is the only thing that put food on their table.
While investigating, it puts her in the cross hairs with Connor “Mad” Rogan, another Prime with telekinetic powers. Rogan is looking for his nephew who is involves with the prime who Nevada is hunting.
During the investigation they are attacked, Nevada realize she needs Rogan’s resources and hence they must work together.
Working on the case they find out this goes too deep than just finding two people, that someone is working behind the scene to cause chaos and upheaval.
Truth is this was an unexpected pleasure.
Nevada surprised me, she was so unexpected, her strength determination and will is moving. The love and protectiveness she has for her family is unconditional, she would literary do anything for them.
Rogan, I thought would be the same ‘alpha-male’, in some aspects he was yet not in the way you expect. I would still like to know more about him and his backstory in the upcoming books
The world in itself was little confusing and took a little effort to figure out.
The politics and intrigue, the plot-line itself was enough for the reader to keep going to find out what happens and what more is to come
In conclusion the other books in the series get better and make this one worth reading, yet it was still good enough to want you to read other books.
Excellent writing, strong but vulnerable FMC, interesting world building. Like a sexy, magical murder mystery.
A series to get hooked on! I read book 4 first, but I recommend reading in order, the character development gives more depth to the next books. A wonderful universe, and characters that are so real & realistic.
Such amazing world-building, a fun plot, and a great romance!
WOW!!! You guys..this book blew me away! I’ve held off for quite a while on reading this because I wanted to read this series back to back. Not sure why. Just needed a bit of a change and Paranormal will always hold my heart. Although this book is listed under paranormal romance, there wasn’t much romance involved. Yes, these characters show a strong attraction and even talk about it. That aside, it didn’t dissuade me from reading this fantastic story. I cannot tell you how much I enjoyed it! Definitely quite different from what I’m used to reading. This is a well written book by an amazing couple that created a world so peculiar with lots of action and creativity. Escape into the world of the Hidden Legacy. You’ll love it.
Great start to a series, Loved Nevada and Rogan
In the late 1800’s an experiment on humans occurred, that brought magic to the masses. Fast forward more than 100 years, careful selective breeding and magical power house families rule. When their councils speak, the government listens.
Nevada Baylor, 25, is from a low magic family not associated with any of the houses. Her families Investigation business is now owned by House Montgomery. She lives in a warehouse that also houses her family business, with her former army sniper mother, former army mechanic maternal grandmother, her two teen age sisters and her two teenage, male cousins. All help with the family business.
Nevada is forced into a now win case by Augustine Montgomery, a Prime magic user, head of House Montgomery and the owner of her business. Bring in the rogue prime, Adam Pierce, alive to his family. Adam, a fire user, is wanted for a bank robbery and murder of a police officer. Failure will cost her her family business.
Connor “Mad” Rogan is head of House Rogan. A former infamous Major in the Army. He is handsome, powerful, and very dangerous. His estranged cousin has come to him begging him to save her teenage son, who was with Adam Pierce, and part of the attack.
Adam takes an interest in Nevada, as she tries to talk him into turning himself in to his house. Rogan wants to use her to get to Adam to find his young cousin.
After a rough start, Nevada and Rogan forge a tentative partnership. A strong attraction brews. Rogan makes no secret in his interest. Nevada, sees nothing but heartache and devastation, in anything beyond their business partnership.
Adam acts out putting Nevada’s family is in danger. Rogan offers protection. Nevada’s rare power to detect lies is changing. It is clear that some powerful Primes are behind Adam. The city of Houston is in danger. Rogan with help from Nevada is the only chance the city has.
Fun, fast paced, and a little steamy. Rogan and Nevada are good for each other. Great secondary characters. A little cliffhanger ending. The Adam issue has been resolved. The betrayal in Rogan’s house, who is behind Adam’s rampage and what they hope to gain is still unknown. Great urban fantasy.
A reread for me, a new book due out is August.
I was engrossed with this book from day one. I think the best review I can give is to say that I immediately went from this book to the next, and I actually purchased these titles, which for a librarian is really saying something!
Blown Away
I felt quite a bit apprehensive going into the Hidden Legacy series. Don’t misunderstand me, I love Ilona Andrews’ writing, the Kate Daniels series is one of my favorites of the UF genre. But because I love Kate Daniels so much I was anxious how the first book in the Hidden Legacy series would measure up. I am glad to say that I was completely blown away and that I might like it even better.
Ilona Andrews creates a world where magic has come to the fore about at 150 years ago as a result of a serum developed for military purposes. Those with the highest magic abilities are called Primes and they are organzied in “Houses”, powerful, prominent families that are the shakers and movers in this world.
Because of a family debt, the Baylor Investigative Agency has become a subsidiary to one of the houses, so when her “boss” makes her take on a case bringing in Adam Pierce, a dangerous Prime with pyrokinetic ability. Nevada Baylor cannot refuse the job if she doesn’t want to loose the family business, even though as a “lie-detector” she is ill-equipped magic-wise to go up against a Prime of Adam Pierce’s calibre.
Enter Connor “Mad” Rogan, an off the chart Prime telekinetic, who is after Adam Pierce for reasons of his own. Though their first meeting takes place under less than auspicious circumstances (to say the least), Nevada sees the necessity of working together to apprehend their quarry. During their investigations Nevada and Rogan and Nevada’s family get targeted by strong magic users, in some instances barely escaping with their lives and they soon come to realize that there is much more to the case than a simple skip trace.
Some reviewers have remarked that there is very little romance going on which leaves me wondering if we have read the same book. Certainly the “romantic” relationship between Nevada and Rogan is not the main focus. Nevada is smitten with Rogan at first sight but because of the way he treats her in the beginning, Nevada tries to keep their relationship on a stricly professional level, while Rogan becomes more and more determined to seduce her to his bed. I loved the chemistry between Nevada and Rogan, they really set sparks off each other and almost burn down the pages.
The book is fast paced, contains a lot of great action, fantastic world building and likable secondary characters, especially Nevada’s family. Although the story line is resolved, the ending contains a very unexpected twist. I can hardly wait for the next installment in this series.
What a great story! I did my usual reading a book in a series out of order. *sigh. I read Book #2 White Hot and was so intrigued by the mention of this first book that I just had to read it too. It did NOT disappoint. And now that I know more of the BEFORE it makes me want to go back and re-read White Hot again. I now have more insight into Nevada and Mad Rogan’s history. It’s hard to believe that I would enjoy it more because even without this book, it was a big hit for me.
Now… back to THIS book. The world-building, the different Houses (of Power) the building of the cultures and the different magical skills and powers was out of this world great!
The main characters were engaging and Nevada has such spunk and take-no-prisoners attitude. She doesn’t take any flak off of Mad Rogan even when she is in a less than a powerful position, I liked that gal a lot. Some of the conversations between Nevade and Mad were pretty funny. So add the fact that the humor is pretty good and there is plenty of danger and action. Speaking of danger, that “fire-starter” they are pursuing is one scary, dangerous guy with a lot of other powerful people protecting and aiding him.
Nevada has her own code of honor that she lives by. It’s a pretty high one when you look at some of the other people around her. But that doesn’t mean her family though. They add so much to the story. Her mom, grandmother, sisters and cousin all have their own strengths and distinct often funny personalities. They also live by a code of honor that is usually at least 3 rules. Something that Nevada shares in the story.
All in all, I enjoyed every last bit of this story and it left me wanting more of the adventures.
I love the Hidden Legacy series–can’t wait for the latest book to come out.
Best book boyfriend of all time! Best world building paranormal read! Strong smart and beautiful young woman with strong funny loving family dynamics. Loved this book and series, that have stand alone storylines.
One of my favorites
Ilona Andrew has the ability to make the fantastic seem real. This series is very good. She has again created a world where magic stands side by side with the normal. It’s a little heavy on the sex scenes, but the story doesn’t suffer from it. I enjoy ed the entire series very much.
I love the Kate Daniels series so much, it’s a frequent reread for me so I’m not sure why I never picked up Ilona Andrews’ Hidden Legacy series until now. Once I started, I practically inhaled Burn For Me. In fact, I’m all bleary-eyed this morning since it was two A.M. before I finished. I just couldn’t put it down. (Note to self: Quit starting books late in the evening. It never goes well for you the next day.)
Once again, the Ilona Andrews duo gives us a unique world. A person’s worth is based on how powerful they are on the magic scale. In the city of Houston the strongest families reign supreme. They arrange marriages based on a person’s genetics and what they can bring to the table power-wise and love is nowhere to be found. Not in the marriages and not between parent and child. Nevada Baylor is a nobody in this world and everyone fears Mad Rogan, even those at the top.
In the beginning, I kept wanting to compare Mad to Curran but I soon figured out it was like comparing apples and oranges. Mad was no Curran, but that doesn’t mean he didn’t fascinate me. He seems to be off-the-charts scary and super powerful but not have a conscience. He seems to have no people to lead or any causes to bleed for—he lives for himself and himself only.
What little family we’re introduced to seem to terrified of him. Or at least that’s what presented on the surface. It’s good that by the end of the book, it’s clear that his seemingly cold, chilling, still waters run deep and there is a lot more to Mad Rogan than he presents to the world.
Nevada is my favorite kind of heroine, smart, strong, loyal, but with enough flaws to keep her likable and all kinds of interesting. The complete opposite of Mad, she’s not a deep well of walking, talking, conscienceless power. Her power is small but unique.
She has a strong sense of right and wrong and a family she loves so much, she’ll sacrifice everything to keep them safe. Which is why she finds herself thrust into the impossible situation of bringing a rogue family member in alive who outmatches her on such a scale, any way you look at it, she will probably end up dead by the end.
This was straight up Urban Fantasy and not a romance per se, but the chemistry between her and Mad was smoking hot which means romance is on the horizon and it’s more than likely going to blow my socks off when it shows up.
I loved everything about Burn For Me, the unique characters, the world building, and the action-packed plot. I’ve already got the next in the series, White Hot, queued up on my iPad and can’t wait to dive in. This had me in my Urban Fantasy Happy Place and I’m not ready to leave it yet.
Rating: 5 Stars
Yes, this is a paranormal romance, but it’s also a paranormal action-adventure, so don’t write it off because of the cover.
Let’s face it – I’m going to read every single thing that Ilona Andrews writes. Because it’s simply all fantastic. I’m very careful not to have plans on the weekend after another of her books comes out, because I’ll stay up all night reading and pretend like the rest of the world doesn’t exist.
A perfect urban fantasy
This is book 1 of Hidden Legacy, an urban fantasy series set in an alternate world where a serum was used to create/awaken mage abilities in the human population, abilities that proved to be inheritable and with the potential to be extraordinarily powerful. As I’ve come to expect with this author/duo, there’s some amazingly crafted world building here as they show us how human culture and history has been affected by this change. And all that is just in the background of the main story.
I loved Nevada, the not-so-ordinary private investigator who is just trying to get by. Struggling to dig out from the debt left by her father’s illness and subsequent death, Nevada is the main support for the family she loves, consisting of her mother, grandmother, two teenage sisters, plus two teenage cousins. Forced into an extremely high risk job or lose everything, I loved her loyalty, her intelligence, her determination, and her vulnerability. The mysterious Rogan is another engaging character, and I can’t help cheering for him as he pursues Nevada.
Amazing world building, wonderful characters that pull you into their story, plus action, mystery, lol humor and a little romance, steam and heartbreak add up to my idea of a perfect urban fantasy. I can’t wait to dive into the next book, which is already waiting for me on my e-reader. This series reminds me a lot of the Mercy Thompson/Alpha & Omega stories by Patricia Briggs, both in overall writing style and that not all the questions get answered by the book’s end, which I consider a (mostly) happy for now rather than a true cliffhanger. 5+ stars
Wow, as much as I read, I’d never stumbled on to a book by the Ilona Andrews writing team. So glad that I did! This story is good fantasy, has a great hook at the start, interesting characters, a great plot and is a real page turner with a twist at the end . I’m all in for more of Nevada and her family, Mad Rogan, and definitely in for more by Ilona Andrews.
The whole series is wonderful!!
I loved Nevada Baylor and Connor “Mad” Rogan! Their witty banter and undeniable attraction was loads of fun! When you add the suspense and the freaking awesome action scenes..okay, its obvious I not only devoured everything in this book but loved every single word!
This was a great start to another kick-ass series from the Andrews. The magic conspiracy is intriguing, the action scenes are satisfyingly mind boggling, I loved Nevada’s quirky family, and I can’t wait to see more Mad Rogan and Nevada!
