‘Burke’ is the fourth book in Kathi S. Barton’s “Bentley Legacy” series. Are you remember the vision from the magic transfer? Yes, Burke has been feeling a bit of a failure. He loves being a doctor but hated his job at the hospital in the ER. He wants the personal touch of being a physician, not the production line kind he’s been having to perform. He’s finished his notice, left the hospital, and is not partners with Nolan. A month into the practice, after he’d finished for the day a man came into his office holding a knife to his nurse’s neck wanting to speak to Captain McClure because he had been turned away from the clinic at the homeless shelter after she had promised him they’d take care of him. That brought Piper, aka Pip, to the shelter trying to find Franklin. Of course, as things go, Piper turns out to be an Earth Fae and she’s Burke’s mate. Unfortunately, Pip has Chronic Major Depression and thinks she’s not worthy of having a mate or inflicting her lack of control onto anyone else. There’s so much going on with this one. Walter and Shane are now official brothers with Walter attending college. If you’ve read the blurb then you know Pip and Shane have shared a connection with Pip promising to always be there for Shane if he needed her. There’s a bit of a gasp moment with these brothers and I found myself sitting on the edge of my seat to see how things would turn out because, if you know anything about Ms. Barton, you know there is going to be manure hitting the fan before everything comes to rights. I have to say, I love the fact that this author has taken an oftentimes unacknowledged, overlooked, misunderstood condition and addressed it with all the fear, love, understanding, and sometimes heartbreak it deserves. This one is well worth the read (or even re-read.)
One of the greatest things about Kathi’s books is that in a lot of her books she rights about the invisible demons that people can suffer in everyday life.
Depression is a demon that Piper, aka Pip, fights against everyday. There are days that the depression has won and she’s tried to take her life, but then there are others that she can survive. But fate has always found a way to keep her alive and in tact to find her mate when necessary. When she has to go looking for her friend Franklin, she discovers the doctor that helped to save her friend is her mate. Although she tries everything she can to keep him at arms length, the Bentley’s are a tough family to resist.
Burke has left working at a hospital to work in his brother’s practice. The man coming into the office holding a gun to his secretary’s head wasn’t something Burke every expected to happen, but alas he’s a doctor first and foremost, so when someone says they are in pain he can’t do anything but help. When Franklin’s friend comes to the hospital to check up on her friend he discovers that she is his mate, but not going to come willingly. Burke will have to break Pip’s walls down and show her that no matter the demons she has, he is there to fight with her.
