Jolene Nighthawk is determined to delay the construction of the casino on Yaqui land. Her father was murdered there and she won’t stop until she finds out who killed him and why. She’s shocked to find that her plan involves her with her ex Sam Cross. He’s a Border Patrol agent searching for bodies buried in the desert. These people are victims of a drug cartel who is known for their cruelty and ruthlessness. Can they work together to find the truth and get justice for the dead? I like to see a woman who has strength and determination. Her courage impressed me. I wanted her to succeed. Sam Cross understands Jolene. He’s willing to bend the rules to give them time to investigate. I thought these two made a powerful couple. Their personal relationship was complicated but the love and caring was still alive. I was pulled into their story. Buried Secrets was a compelling read. I liked Jolene and Sam. They were meant to be together. The desert held secrets that would bring closure to them and to their friends and co-workers. This was a great ending to the Holding The Line series. Carol Ericson did an excellent job.
This was an entertaining, well-written book. Ranger Jolene Nighthawk is discovered by her ex Sam Cross, a Border Patrol agent at the site where a casino is being built. They both have secrets regarding the land and must work together to try to stay safe. The book was fast-paced and held my interest. I enjoyed the story and look forward to reading more books by this author.
Author Carol Ericson brings her terrific romantic suspense series “Holding the Line” to an exciting conclusion with Book Four, “Buried Secrets”. In the desert around the border town of Paradiso, Arizona, an ancient culture and a modern-day crime syndicate both want control of the territory to serve their own purposes. Jolene Nighthawk is a ranger for the National Park Service and a member of the Yaqui Tribe. She plans to bring to a halt the construction of a gambling casino on Yaqui land. Jolene also hopes to find out what really happened to her father, who lost his life on that land. Border Patrol agent Sam Cross, divorced and father of a young daughter, has just returned to Paradiso after a couple of years in San Diego. He and Jolene had a difficult personal history, but Sam had hopes of making things right between them. When Sam realizes that Jolene planted bones in a fake grave to bring the groundbreaking for the casino to a halt, he makes a deal with her to keep it a secret while he works on a missing persons case. If they keep each other’s confidences, and work together, they may both find what they have been looking for–in life, and maybe in love. The feelings they once had for one another are stronger than ever, but there are many issues–and dangers–for them to overcome. All the while, the notorious master criminal El Gringo Viejo is still running his drug empire–will he finally be toppled from his throne? If Jolene and Sam survive the threats all around, can they put the heartaches of the past behind them and hope for a happy future together? I have really enjoyed the “Holding the Line Series”, and I highly recommend all four books for lovers of action-packed, thrilling romantic suspense.

Full of danger and intrigue! With the fourth book in her Holding the Line series Carol Ericson brings us BURIED SECRETS. The story kicks off the excitement from page one and continues turning up surprise after surprise throughout. I felt pulled in several different directions with this plot, but I enjoyed Jolene and Sam’s relationship progression a lot.
Jolene Nighthawk had my attention from the start when she buries false evidence in the dessert to get the casino groundbreaking halted. She’s determined to find answers before real evidence is destroyed.
Sam Cross is really easy to like. Jolene holds a grudge against him for their previous break-up but she also still cares for him a great deal and is willing to work with him towards their common goal of finding out what’s been going on out there in the dessert.
I recommend this book to anyone who likes a mystery to solve as a relationship develops and real life keeps interfering.
Although I’m sad this series has to end, this was a great story to end it with! Jolene and Sam were great characters and the story was a good one! Jolene and Sam were involved before but Jolene found out Sam had a previous relationship he had to return to so she broke it off and her heart was broken so she hasn’t recovered from that. When he turns up in Arizona again as she’s investigating on tribal land, she doesn’t know what to think! Happy is not one of her feelings!!! Now that Sam is free from his previous relationship, he is happy to see Jolene again, even if she’s not happy to see him! However, his investigation as a Border Agent regarding bodies buried in the desert take precedence. As they team up to investigate a casino that is being built on Yaqui land, there is danger everywhere! I loved the chemistry between the two of them and of course, the non-stop action! I can always count on that with any Carol Ericson book!
