Bubbles of cold sweat trickled down Faye’s spine. The hole wasn’t empty. Before she could turn and run, she caught the two sightless eyes staring up at her. Only then did she scream.
When Faye Baker discovers a fragile child’s skull behind the walls of her new home, Detective Lottie Parker is called to investigate. The house has been owned for years by the family of Faye’s boyfriend Jeff, so when … of Faye’s boyfriend Jeff, so when Jeff starts acting suspiciously, Lottie wonders what he might be hiding…
Lottie doesn’t have long to dig deeper before a child’s bones are found by eleven-year-old Gavin on nearby railway tracks. The bones don’t match the small skull behind the walls, but Lottie can’t ignore the coincidence. Someone out there must be missing their loved ones and it’s up to her to put right a terrible wrong.
Unable to shake a feeling of foreboding, Lottie goes to speak to Faye, and discovers that she hasn’t turned up for work. When Faye’s body is found stuffed in the back of her car, Lottie needs to find out who wanted her to keep quiet.
As Lottie hunts for Faye’s killer, the case takes a darker turn when Gavin goes missing. Faye and Gavin are connected only by the grisly body parts they discovered. But who are these little victims and why has their killer come back? Can Lottie find the answers before another precious life is taken?

This is the 8th book in Patricia Gibney’s Detective Lottie Parker series and this series is just so darn good! Yes, it’s dark and not for everyone, but I do love my crime fiction and this detective series is one of my favorites!
One of my favorite parts of this series is that we are pulled right into things. Between the cases that the team gets called into and what is going on in Lottie’s life, nothing is ever easy. But somehow Lottie manages to juggle it all, though someone on the team isn’t too happy with how she is juggling it and is watching her. Will there be trouble down the road for her? Oh and let’s not forget that Lottie has a new boss and that is never an easy transition.
As is always the case, we have some sections where we hear from the killer and some of this is done in the past, which just makes it so hard to put the pieces together. I love these sections, as chilling as they tend to be, because I always try to find little clues to see if I can figure out who this person might be, but I’ve yet to figure it out.
This book is addicting, fast-paced and completely binge-worthy. Things happen with our characters, development-wise, that has me so anxious for the next book. This is why I love this series – you connect with the characters and need to know what is going on with them and having to wait until the next book comes out is agony!!!
Have you started reading this series? If you like police procedurals with good character development, I highly recommend this series.
I love a crime thriller that reads like a television show (especially after reading some heavy historical fiction). As with other books in the Lottie Parker series, the author introduces characters in a seemingly disjointed way, and it takes a while to see how they all fit together. But this is something that Ms. Gibney is talented at achieving: tying everything together into a coherent and intriguing investigation. We also get more insight into Lottie’s personal life, which seems to get more complicated even as it should be getting easier. Another winning entry in the series. Buried Angles by Patricia Gibney is the 8th in the Detective Lottie Parker series which is a police procedural revolving around Lottie, as the main character, but with a full ensemble cast rounding out the mi. It takes place in Ireland, but could take place anywhere; murder is murder. Twenty years ago two young girls and their mother will killed, stabbed, in a bloody mess. The son and the father were missing, never found, guilty? All of a sudden people start dying. At first there is no connection, but then odd bits start fitting together. Soon Lottie and her team would discover the truth but would it be enough to save her from her own roguish ways as a too-independent investigator.
The addition of Lottie’s personal life makes for compelling reading. As any middle-aged woman can attest…lots has gone on before. She has kids, she has a dead husband, she has a new fiancé, and she works far too much for any of them. She follows her nose and has her own rules. She solves this crime, as she always does, but she broke rules along the way, and possibly got people killed. Her new boss doesn’t like the way she works. She did, however, solve a complicated crime, an excellent mystery. She is not sure she can survive her own life, let alone her job. This is a compelling read, an excellent mystery, and terrific characters. I recommend it. In fact, go back and read the others.

Kept me wondering and rapt right to the end
4.5stars
This is my second reading adventure with Irish garda DI Lottie Parker and her crew. It was thrilling and tragic, right from the initial discovery of a body (or part of one!) by two innocent schoolboys exploring with a drone. The good to great points:
– Well-written;
– Inclusion of some children and teens as key characters. These children are not just cute props, they have a serious role to play;
– Inclusion of an old unsolved mystery that impacts directly on the current case;
– Plenty of potential suspects and twists. I really had no clue of the real villains behind the scenes until just before the high octane action climax;
– A good balance of criminal casework versus Lottie’s domestic life. The murder and mayhem are central and occupy the bulk of the action, but glimpses of her complex home life are peppered in to give her character more depth;
– I love an adversarial relationship at work and both Lynch and Lottie’s new superintendent provide that.
There were a large number of characters to follow and that made it quite confusing to follow initially. But I suppose that also made for an investigation that kept me guessing longer. I do love when a writer provides twists and red herrings that keep the tension and the chase going right through to the end.
Thanks to publisher Bookouture and NetGalley for providing an advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest review and the opinions expressed are my own.
If only there were more than 5 stars !!!
I love this series with Lottie Parker who is a detective I would want on my side, she gives the case everything she has.
From the moment Faye discovers a child’s skull behind the wall in her home to the last page I was hooked.
Can’t wait for book 9, first in line !!! No pressure !! Well maybe some.
Thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for allowing me to follow Lottie on another convoluted case!!!!
