Burden of Proof is an interesting exploration of the devastating human carnage lurking behind the fog of local pride and athletic boosterism that blinds communities to the evil and darkness that often thrive within those social constructs. Former high-flying attorney Cassie Leary returns to her hometown and is forced to tackle the powers that be in in a story with a well-constructed plot that generally keeps the story moving forward. There is a rather large cast to balance, and I hope to see depth and complexity added to them as the series progresses. The author explores what it really means to come from the “wrong side of the tracks” in a community that sometimes consciously and often unconsciously enforces the social strata between the so-called “winners” and “losers” in town. Cassie certainly has room to grow into a layered, interesting protagonist as the series progresses, and I hope the author is able to tease out a little more ambiguity within this character and her motivations in future books. This is an enjoyable read that should appeal to readers of legal thrillers who appreciate a deep dive into courtroom drama.
This story follows “Crown of Thorne” where Cassie winds up leaving Chicago. After being back in her hometown of Delphi, she has just finished a court trial where she came out on top. No sooner then it is done, all of the people around her a sad. The coach of the high school basketball team has been murder and a suspect has been arrested. Cassie is notified that her turn has come up on assigned cases and she is to be the lawyer for the accused killer. After meeting with the accused killer, Cassie on leaving is accosted by members of the community. They all seem out for blood and since she is the lawyer that is representing the suspect, she is in their crosshairs.
This type of attitude is what made Cassie leave in the first place. The story introduces the remaining members of her family and highlight the difficulties that her family ran into while she was gone. As Cassie started looking into the evidence on the case, things went from bad to worse. Her client was not cooperative and all and did many things that Cassie did not approve on. It is finally time for the trial and things look bleak. The prosecution rests its’ case and Cassie starts with her client testifying. Her testimony brought to the forefront happenings people were not aware of.
To discover all that Cassie had to overcome, what happenings were revealed, what verdict the jury released you must read this book. The ending will surprise you.

Burden of Truth!
Cass has moved back home after a decade of being in Chicago working for a legal company there. But after a brief case is resolved, she gets handed a case that literally no one wants to touch, defending the person who killed their town’s beloved Coach.
But as Cass investigates, she has more questions than answers and when she finally uncovers the truth…it’s worse than she thought. So much intrigue, suspense and danger follows Cass as she investigates the murder to get the truth of what happened and to find justice!
I loved this story and as a past legal student, I found it riveting to see terms that I learnt at Law school put into theory but also how the case evolves and takes on a life of its own:) Thank you to Robin for my advanced copy for which I leave my honest review and I willingly will sign up for more books by Robin as this book was just sensational and I want to find out more about Killian and see what case Cass works next
