When their eyes meet, their hearts stop and beat as one. I’ve always been told I was the anomaly, the fluke, the only black bear they’d ever seen. Somehow, I know that’s not true. The wolves have told me the Alpha over all the bears is headed this way. But they’ve sent me away so he won’t see me. I’m a burden, a hindrance to the grizzlies, yet they keep a shock collar around my neck so I can’t … neck so I can’t escape.
On the wolf pack lands, I see someone approaching.
A male—and he smells like home.
Has someone come to save me?

I was amazed by this book, an exceptionally well written near shifter romance. Alpha bear shifters and their alpha mates make excellent central characters, as with Hawke and Echo. A sweet read! I did receive an arc from the author for an honest review.
Burden by Lila Felix is such a wonderful story that I have read. This is book number one in this wonderful start to a brand new series writen by a brand new author for me to read. I highly recommend this story to everyone who loves reading about bear shifters and paranormal romance.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Echo has been harshly treated because she was different. Hawke is striving to be a good Alpha and seeks the black bear he’s heard about. When he discovers Echo is his mate, he wants to protect her. However, Echo only feels like a burden. I enjoyed reading how these characters slowly grow closer, with patience and courage to trust.

It has all the action of a good shifter book, with the deep affection that only a mate bond can provide. Echo is just amazing! She had such a horrible time growing up, thinking she was alone and being used and abused. Now that she is given a chance, she proves to be smart, loving, and loyal to the core. Then there’s Hawk, this gorgeous Alpha who struggles to rule his people. He couldn’t even imagine how much one female could make until he found Echo.
This is my first read by this author and I devoured this book, I just couldn’t put it down. It’s book 1 of a trilogy and it was a great beginning, I just loved it. A fast paced paranormal between two bear shifters, Hawke and Echo. The story captured me from the beginning and I remained glued to my kindle. I loved that there was lots of story line, plot and character building, I’m not a prude but characters going at it like rabbits instead of story at times puts me off. I fell in love with these two and the secondary characters and can’t wait to read the rest in this set.
Hawke is in way over his head. After his father’s death, he is forced to become alpha of his black bear shifter clan. His dad wasn’t the best of alphas and, needless to say, the clan was left in financial turmoil. Also, kids are skipping school and a lone black bear has been spotted in grizzly shifter territory. Hawke just can’t seem to catch a break.
The lone black bear turns out to be his one and only true mate, Echo. She however, doesn’t really know about the whole mate thing, actually she doesn’t know about any black bear traditions or history. The Grizzly clan she has been living with since she was a baby constantly berates her and treats her as an outsider. That doesn’t stop them from making her cook, clean, keep inventory, do laundry, deal with finances, and guard the perimeter. Her life is miserable, but she can’t escape due to the large metal shock collar around her neck, that is until she meets Hawke.
Echo is so thankful that Hawke rescued her, but she starts to feel like a burden. That’s all she has ever been told that she was. A burden. Their actual relationship (I mean they are mates…) develops rather slowly. It is pretty adorable, yet awkward at the same time. You have to remember, Echo is completely unfamiliar with black bear customs and is learning about all of their mating rituals for the first time. As you can guess, there is a whole lot of blushing!
My only real problem with Burden was how things were worded. Some of the dialogue just didn’t seem all that natural. I just wanted a bit more, especially some lingo from the bayou! That would have been REALLY fun to read! But, other than that, Burden was a cute story. I really loved the plot and thought that Echo and Hawke were really great for each other. Both of them were extremely thoughtful and caring.
Also, I absolutely loved the character of Martha. She was completely relatable and super sweet!
