Bubba and his sister Squirt are a charming pair of adventurers. From the time they’re swept down through the earth and into Xian, China, to the end, they’re challenged. They’ve landed in a strange land among a sea of terracotta warriors. Then they must help an ancient emperor’s ghost find something he’s lost. Great geography and history bits are included in the tale that kids are sure to enjoy. This was a fun read even for someone who left children many years ago.
Have you ever wanted to dig a hole to China? If so, what did you expect to find? Gold? Jewels? A treasure chest? Bones? Did you follow your dream and discover what you expected or something even better? In BUBBA AND SQUIRT’S BIG DIG TO CHINA, an adventure story by Author Sherry Ellis, Squirt tells her brother Bubba that he can’t dig a hole to China. He says he can, so they take the magic shovel that Grandpa bought at a garage sale and decide to see if he’s right.
The digging doesn’t go quite the way they had expected and they soon find themselves in a new world. Where are they? Could it be China? Maybe. But they haven’t a clue how to get home.
Sherry Ellis has written a story that will have you turning pages to see what happens next. Bubba and Squirt have a mystery to solve and on the way they meet some very interesting characters. The big question is will they find their way home or will they never see their parents again?
BUBBA AND SQUIRT’S BIG DIG TO CHINA is a fascinating story of bravery, discovery, and fun that should appeal to middle-grade and even older readers that enjoy an adventure while learning some history along the way. The author has added a Glossary with Chinese words which is very helpful in reading the story. She also shows the correct way to pronounce the words and character names. A recipe for Chinese Dumplings sounds delicious.
I recommend this story for school libraries and classes, public libraries and your own library. And if you plan to dig a hole to China, be very careful. You never know who might be waiting for you. Happy reading.
All kids have head the myth that if you dig a hole in the USA, you will wind up in China. Well award-winning author Sherry Ellis brings you there. I saw Ms. Ellis at a book signing and I decided to buy this book for my granddaughter who is a little young, at 6 years old, so I read it to her when I spent the weekend babysitting. We both loved the story… and the time spent together too. If you have a child or grandchild that you want to read a book to or have them read a wonderful adventure story on their own, I highly recommend this book.
My daughters and I enjoyed this book. It actually fit in very well with our homeschooling lessons since we had just completed a lesson on China and the Terracotta Army. Bubba and Squirt’s Big Dig to China was much more fun to read than our school text book!
Bubba and Squirt take turns speaking in first person in the chapters of the book, which made the book unique to me. I haven’t seen this done in other books, so it was an interesting way to present the story. There were parts where my daughters and I were laughing out loud with some of the silly stuff Bubba would say.
While this is definitely a fictional story, there are pieces of education about China sprinkled into the story. There is a glossary in the back to help you pronounce the Chinese words throughout the book. There is also a recipe for Chinese Dumplings at the end. I liked the excerpt about the Terracotta Army at the end of the book.
My daughters and I would definitely recommend this book to supplement your learning about China. We homeschool, so it was a nice book to use to take a little break from the traditional text books, while keeping in mind it is fiction, with a little history as well. We would say this book would be best suited for grades 6-8.
We received a PDF version of this book and we wanted to voluntarily share our review to let others know how much we enjoyed Bubba and Squirt’s Big Dig to China.
Bubba and Squirt do what we all wished we could do as kids – dig a hole to China. But there they find a ghost who sends them on a mission. Their quest turns up some interesting characters and we learn a lot about China in the process. Fun book for kids!
