Escape is impossible. And now I’m relying on a monster for mercy.I can see how he eyes me. He owns me. He can do whatever he wants. His will is law. This world is wrecked. Society has collapsed. The Kraaj control everything. They can do what they want. Take what they want. They command. And we are theirs to claim. If we don’t obey, we die. How do you find love in the middle of a war?Maybe you do, … obey, we die.
How do you find love in the middle of a war?
Maybe you do, somehow.
But I guarantee you, it’ll be twisted.
It’ll make you sick.
Everyone in this world is just a lamb
They’re waiting to be slaughtered by my Kraaj master.
And when he’s done, each night, he’ll come home.
And turn his hungry eye to his prize.
To the one soul that’s twisted enough to be his fated mate.
The only one in this galaxy gone mad that’s a fit for him.
Me.
Brute’s Challenge explores a grittier side of the Athenaverse. It sits in the Conquered Mates series and is a dark romance set on a human planet that has fallen to a hostile alien race. It can be read as a standalone, but it still shares the same universe that you’ve found in other books. This book features a dark romance of an alpha male alien warrior, and a human woman. No cheating, no cliffhangers, and HEA guaranteed.

Outstanding story! I have been reading this authors’ books for some time now and another great story with Melina and Mehr this time. These characters are passionate in their peruses and with each other in the midst of conflict.

Amazingly, this was a pretty great read. Kilar at first glance is brutish and weird with his interaction with Hara. But this Kraaj warrior has more depth than met the eye. It was a pretty entertaining book.

Whenever they say “dark” I go in with trepidation but this was okay. Yes it was violent and bloody but Hara definitely holds her own and there was enough humor to lighten the story perfectly. Both are outcasts but Hara is one of the “defeated” and Kilar has a plan to improve his lot in life. There are two ways to do this – one is through success in battle and the other is to have a human mate so he sets about achieving these goals. I liked that they both brought something to the relationship and loved that Hara was more than capable of taking her place. This is part of the conquered mates series but I felt it stood alone. Fast paced with characters that were well suited in spite of their situations. (I voluntarily reviewed an ARC).
Unexpectedly delightful story
At first glance, Kilar is unlikely to win over Hara, or a reader, but as the story progresses, and his Brutish ways come to be seen as a fierce protectiveness, and a willingness to fight to the last breath for Hara, her home, and her friends, Kilar reveals there is a lot more to him than a casual glance reveals.
The stories in this series have a fun sense of humor and are part of a cohesive and coherent Universe, which adds to the reading experience. Each story feels like it is immersing me deeper into the Universe, and even as serious topics like war are tackled, the characters manage to maintain hope for the future, and determination to make things better.

Every conflict has at least two sides but in the Atheverse, you get to put faces on those sides and they aren’t always what you think. Kilar wants to move up the ranks the easiest way possible. He decides he needs a human mate, so like any good Kraaj warrior, he buys one. Hara was sold at action as punishment for “crimes” she committed, and now she’s stuck with this Kraaj warrior. And so the story goes. Fast, fun, some twists and turns. This book is an overall good read.
I received an ARC from Booksprout and this is my honest review.
This is the third book in Conquered Mates.
Like the books before it I couldn’t put it down.
The plot is well developed and interesting.
The chemistry is definitely out of this word between the characters.

Book three in the Conquered Mates series a well written story that held my interest throughout. This is Brute/Kilar and Hara’s story there is suspense, drama, danger, capture of Shorcu General Murtak, and romance. I want to read the next book. This story is about Kilar a Kraaj warrior and Hara a Human criminal. This is a standalone read but also part of series. I really loved first half, with a romantic comedy feel. Second half is more action strategy with HEA at end. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
My families past makes its impossible for me to advance my career. Choices I made have landed me serious trouble but my have been the saving grace.
I had everything I thought necessary to retire to a life of luxury but a chance at getting a little revenge against me sees my world crumble.
Fighting to stay alive in a hostile situation can help build trust.

As a lowly grunt tainted and ashamed with a bad reputation, Kilar was not respected. But there was something he thought would help him and he wanted it stat. For a brute and bloodthirsty warrior as himself, conquer a human would be a hard task but he already had an as under his sleeve. He had things under control, that he believed. Fool Kraaj! With Hara Millor, a fiery, smart and sly woman anything could happen and soon she was beside not behind her owner. A survivor she was with enough skills and passion to keep her violent but also different Kraaj. Lot of violence with the Kraaj and his lust for the battle and the blood. Interesting his loyalty, sacrifice and need to protect when he had been deprived of his worth. Liked that they helped each other to be better persons and developed a true relationship. Chuckled with Kilar’s secret weapon. Even the aliens believe anything! A dark story with action, suspense, adventure, allies, romance, hot passion and lot of blood.
So often we get these stories that only give us one side to the conflict, and this series is not one of them. We have a huge war that has been going on for 350 years, and we are seeing things from multiple points of view. It really makes the universe seem real. Bravo to the author for keeping all these balls in the air.
And ZUVOC!
Hara had everything taken fro her and put in jail and is to be auctioned off. Kilar is just a grunt soldier. He buy Hara and is heading down to get her when there is a surprise attack. Kilar locates Hara and things don’t go well. Kilar will protect Hara no mater what. Kilar is a fighting machine and he gets them out of more than one situation with brute force. Hara goes to her smuggler buddies who help when least expected. Such a great dramatic ending. With all that is going around them can Kilar and Hara find love? Loved the book.
