A very good compelling story that grabs you in the beginning. Little five year old Millie is a sweetheart and has suffered an unimaginable short life with her now deceased drug addicted single mother. Cole, her uncle, is successful, wealthy, loves Millie to pieces and now is in his custody. Cole and Millie’s situation shines a light on how amazing a person Cole is and at what lengths he will go to make sure Millie has the life she so deserves. It is touching, tender and so sweet that your heart soars with compassion and understanding. Lance is Cole’s best friend and Lance’s sister, Layla is a friend as well but, with her help with getting Millie acclimated to her new life, Layla becomes much more to Cole and to Millie. It’s a sweet build of an intimate relationship between Cole and Layla. There is something that bothers me though, it’s that Layla has these talks with herself about her inner feelings and they never come out to Cole. She is conflicted and confused at times about a relationship with her past and how that could have affected her relationship now with Cole but, she never expresses them to any one only to herself and then, she never fully resolves her thoughts. So, I felt a bit confused myself because I kept thinking that she would have this “come to Jesus” moment with Cole and it never happens. That could also be why I feel that the happy ending/conclusion to be bit lackluster.
GREAT!
This story was an okay for me. I liked the characters and although I enjoyed the story-line, the chemistry between the main characters was missing. I need to feel the romance between the characters if I’m reading a romance read and I didn’t get it. I felt the friendship between Layla and Cole but that’s all. I didn’t believe they were in love. There were also a few mistakes within the story. I think that what happened with Holly at the end felt as if it was thrown in there for her to make another appearance in the story because of the threat she made in the beginning but it wasn’t necessary. The ending was okay and I’m not sure if I will read other books from this author. This one didn’t leave me with that “I need more” feeling. The book wasn’t bad because there were parts that made me laugh, but the lack of chemistry between Layla and Cole is what hurt this story for me.
Not enough background to these characters or the push pull of Cole gaining custody fo his niece. One minute there’s a question of her being on the autism spectrum, the next she is fine staying with Layla’s mom. And I expected more of a slow burn between them vs longtime friend have a thunderclap and insta love. I also thought the writing itself was a little juvenile.
I loved this story! I also related to some of the story about Millie so I was touch even more. I think this is my favorite book by NB! I definitely recommend it!

This is a well written book with strong characters and an emotional story line. When Cole loses his sister he’s determined to raise his four year old niece. He turns to his best friend’s sister.Layla for help. This is their story. The author does a fantastic job building and moving the story and pulls you in with all the emotions flowing throughout. She brings it to life with her descriptive writing and vividly detailed scenes. It’s a slow burn romance and I enjoyed reading their story. Highly recommend reading.
