In this thrilling novel in the #1 New York Times bestselling In Death series, Lieutenant Eve Dallas finds herself in the middle of a conspiracy when she investigates the disappearance of a former U.S. Senator. Just as Dennis Mira is about to confront his cousin Edward about selling the West Village brownstone that belonged to their grandfather, he gets a shock: Edward is in front of him, … is in front of him, bruised and bloody…and then everything goes black.
When Dennis comes to, Edward is gone. Luckily Dennis’s wife is a top profiler for the NYPSD—and a close colleague of Lieutenant Eve Dallas. Now Eve is determined to uncover the secrets of Edward Mira and learn what enemies he may have made in his long career as a lawyer, judge, and senator. A badge and a billionaire husband can get you access to places others can’t go, and Eve intends to shine some light on the dirty deals and dark motives behind the disappearance of a powerful man, the family discord over a multimillion-dollar piece of real estate…and a new case that no one saw coming.

I’m a huge fan of the “In Death” series, by J. D. Robb. These are mystery/police procedurals set in the near future (2050), so the world is both recognizable and a little bit fantastic. There is also a romantic component that I find adds to the book, rather than detracts from it, as can sometimes happen. The entire series is very well written, with great characters; and the characters and their various relationships all develop over the course of the series. The mysteries are solid and well plotted, and amazingly, for having so many books in the series, they are all varied. I don’t open a new book and feel like I’ve read it before.
Each book can be read as a stand alone, and Brotherhood in Death is the most recent. But you’ll get the most enjoyment by reading them in order, starting with “Naked in Death”. The murders are not described in gory detail, and there is not an excess of violence. These books get my highest recommendation.
Another great book in the In Death series. This particular book draws you in with the corruption of a secret brotherhood that has Lt. Dallas trying to find the killer before any more deaths occur. Great read, lots of things going on to keep you involved in the story.
I always enjoy the books of J.D. Robb.
Never read a JD Robb book that I didn’t LOVE! Characters are so real, and although it’s a little futuristic, it is SO Believable. “Never a dull moment” is an understatement. On most TV shows and books, I can figure out the bad guy right away. If one isn’t pointed out in the book, I’m kept guessing – there are twists and turns. Also love the romances between the main and secondary characters. Just enough to make it a romance, but sticks to the main plot of the crime and mystery. If you haven’t read JD Robb, you are missing out.
I have read her entire series. I always pay full price to get these as soon as they go on sale. Best Author Ever!! I love the series and the heroine, Eva Dallas. If you haven’t read the series, start at the beginning. You won’t regret it!
Nora does not disappoint. Eve is drawn into a series of murders that pull at her, reminding her of personal tragic experiences in her life. Per usual, she cracks me up concerning idioms and language usage and interpretations, but here she has times with Peabody and Roarke that brought tears of compassion. The Brotherhood turns out to be an entity in itself that has spread terror and pain for decades. I won’t elaborate but, just when you think the worst has been happened for Eve, there’s more.
Awesome book
Read the series, great stories
The book is well written as always but dark. There was more violence and detail in the murders and rapes. Eve goes back to her nightmares again. Like I said a bit dark. It’s a good mystery but not one of my favorites.
I always enjoy the books in this series
Another fantastic book in this series! I absolutely love the relationship between Dennis Mira and Eve. Eve has admitted to herself multiple times how much of a crush she has on Mr. Mira and so any book that features these two I devour. Having said that Brotherhood in Death was a very emotional and difficult read. I had a really hard time with the “victims” in this one and to imagine Eve, with all she had gone through, having to stand for them was mind boggling.
Simply put, I loved it and this one is definitely in my top 5 of all the books in this series.
I am a huge fan of JD Robb. I like the characters a lot. I found this book interesting because I really sympathized with the killers. As did Eve, the heroine. The crime made Eve dig deeply into her own issues which enhanced this story about sexual assault and the ever-lasting trauma victims endure.
As always, Roark is the hero to die for. No wonder I read romance novels. Where else do men like this exist?
I realized when reading Brotherhood in Death (number 42 in J D Robb’s Dallas series) that I was reading what essentially was the same as the last 30 books in this series. Not trying to be disrespectful, but even interestingly created main and subordinate characters do get tiresome after a point in time. And when a reader can accurately plot the moment that Roarke steps in with his whiz-bang fabulously costly toys and helps Dallas catch her criminal, it has become time to say “enough!”
Fast paced, snarky, strong woman, great major and minor characters supporting Lt. Dallas — the goods are all there, but, say the first 7 books completed her cast of repeat supporting characters, simple math says I’ve spent hours of time reading one book with different nemeses 35 times. Even Nancy Drew got olf quickly when I was ten, despite the new title and cover art.
I don’t remember finishing Brotherhood of Death because I was simply past being engaged at all.
Robb has a gift in writing. And the way she produces her books at machine gun speed, she must be a writing machine or have a secret team who responds in an instant and comes up with the story for the plot she has laid out. I hope that’s not the case. That’s precisely why I stopped reading James Patterson.
I don’t care for romances usually, so I haven’t read her other line, but if she comes up with a new and compellingly different strong female repeat character, I’ll pick up J D Robb again — for time undetermined.
Love the whole series!
Eve Dallas and her crew of characters are truly entertaining throughout the books
I love all the JD Robb books!
I never get tired of this series. Another brilliant tale in the lives of Eve and Roarke. I’ve been reading them since book 10 was released and read all 10 in that year. I look forward to them coming out each time and never miss one. Great plot, awesome characters and I look forward to the next installment.
I have owned this series since book one but have switched to eBooks so I will admit I have not touched this series for over a year but I have once again thoroughly enjoyed this read.
This is one series that is still as good as book one but has matured into a world that makes you feel a part of it.
The subject matter is once again very near the knuckle and close to the hearts of quite a few people.
We quite often have cases that deal with a dark side of human nature that can hit close to home for some. Eves own personal past is daunting but how Eve deals with the emotions of this case just makes me really happy to see how far she has come herself. When she was able to talk to Mr Mira was one hell of a moment and having the cuddles just made me tear up. Eve is growing as a person and I love it.
Roarke is as always her rock and it was lovely to be back with the gang again. Lovely to see Trueheart get his badge.
Will be reading the next two books in the series.
I love the juxtaposition of Eve Dallas with Roark
As usual, JD Robb doesn’t disappoint, however it’s not her best work. This book has Eve working more willingly with Roarke as opposed to her usual protests..
