Includes “Crime 101,” “Broken,” and “The Last Ride” – all soon to be major motion pictures!
“One of America’s greatest storytellers.” – Stephen King
“Winslow, whose work includes a dozen of the finest crime novels written in the last 20 years, displays all of his strengths, including propulsive narration, compelling characters and a tight, staccato writing style, in ‘Broken,’ a collection of … tight, staccato writing style, in ‘Broken,’ a collection of six remarkable novellas.” – Bruce De Silva, Associated Press
No matter how you come into this world, you come out broken . . .
In six intense short novels connected by the themes of crime, corruption, vengeance, justice, loss, betrayal, guilt and redemption, Broken is #1 international bestseller Don Winslow at his nerve-shattering, pulse-pounding, heartbreaking best. In Broken, he creates a world of high-level thieves and low-life crooks, obsessed cops struggling with life on and off the job, private detectives, dope dealers, bounty hunters and fugitives, the lost souls driving without headlights through the dark night on the American criminal highway.
With his trademark blend of insight, humanity, humor, action, and the highest level of literary craftsmanship, Winslow delivers a collection of tales that will become classics of crime fiction.
“With the passing of Elmore Leonard a few years back, it’s now safe to proclaim Winslow America’s greatest living crime writer. His consistency is matched only by his creativity, his talent exceeded by his ability to surpass himself time and time again.” – Jon Land, Providence Journal

You say you like hard-boiled American crime fiction? So you figure you’re tough enough to take Winslow’s best shots, cabron? I doubt it. Winslow delivers a beating in this one that will make you cry like a baby. This is America without a filter, America on the down and dirty. The real America.
Toughen up before you try to read it. You’ve been warned.
A collection of 6 short stories, all different, entertaining, and hard to put down. Masterful storytelling.
Winslow is always great, every book, every time
Well written collection of intertwined short stories. If you have read Winslow before, you know he is a master story teller.
A brilliant read!
I would give this 6 stars were that possible. Six novellas about love, loss, revenge, redemption, greed, etc and some very witty dialogue. I loved all the stories but I especially liked Paradise and The Last Ride. The San Diego Zoo has one of the greatest opening lines ever: No one knows how the chimp got the revolver.
Two words: read this!
I love this guy’s writing. He knows how to sling his words! It’s the first of his books that I have read. Now I’m going through the rest of ’em.
Terrific book of short stories by this crime writer. One of the interesting things to me was the thematic and narrative similarity in his last story, The Last Ride, to Edward Abbey’s novel, The Brave Cowboy. Both dealt with modern day cowboys on the Rio Grande, out of sync with, and finally crushed by, contemporary life, and the way it violates ancient traditions and connection to the earth.
This is the third of Winslow’s trilogy about the U.S. war on drugs from south of the border. The entire trilogy is deeply compelling, mirroring as it does a great number of real-life events and corruption–the Iran-Contra scandal of the Reagan presidency, the assassination of a cardinal, the abduction, torture and murder of undercover DEA agent Enrique Camarena. The books can be read individually, but are best appreciated in order, as each of second and third are deeply rooted in the first.
I’ve been a fan Winslow’s stuff for years. Picked up a copy of Broken on day one and loved it. It’s a handful of bite-sized crime stories that you can tear off as you see fit. If you’re a fan of his, there’s one story in particular that pulls characters from his past books. Pretty fun stuff.
Winslow breaks away from his famed novel writings after the conclusion of the explosive Cartel series with The Border (2019) and delivers his talents in Broken. A short story collection of six novella, Winslow writes each of them to possess their own identity, but carries the reader through each one to the next with gratifying conclusions, creating desire to turn the page to read the next one. Full of mystery, winding turns, drama and even underlying dark humor in the entirety of the stories, Winslow continues to show his craft honed with this collection. Writing with short prose and a clipped style rivaling that of famed crime writer James Ellroy, Winslow pens with precision and deft accuracy in each of his stories. Winslow also keeps true to his masterful works by giving his avid fans cameos of character past. Whether you be a fan of Ellroy, Winslow, both or neither, one stands to be captivated by Broken and should consider adding it to their reading lists for a lasting refresher in the short story world.”
