An extraordinary thriller—gripping, haunting, and marvelously told—about two friends growing up in a rapidly changing Boston, who must face the sins of their past in the midst of a series of brutal murders.“You came back here to bury your past. . . . Thing is, you gotta kill it first.”Kevin Pearce—baseball star, honor student, the pride of Brighton—was fifteen when he left town in the back of his … left town in the back of his uncle’s cab. He and his buddy Bobby Scales had just committed heinous violence for what they thought were the best of reasons. Kevin didn’t want a pass, but he was getting it anyway. Bobby would stay and face the music; Kevin’s future would remain bright as ever. At least that was the way things were supposed to work, except in Brighton things never work the way they’re supposed to.
Twenty-six years later, Kevin is a Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist for the Boston Globe. He’s never been back to his old block, having avoided his family and, especially, Bobby Scales. Then he learns his old friend is the prime suspect in a string of local murders. Suddenly, Kevin’s headed home—to protect a friend and the secret they share. To report this story to the end and protect those he loves, he must face not only an elusive, slippery killer, but his own corrupted conscience.
A powerhouse of a thriller, Brighton is a riveting and elegiac exploration of promises broken, debts owed, and old wrongs made right . . . no matter what the cost.

BRIGHTON is the f***king bomb! I loved it.
I have enjoyed all of Michael Harvey’s books, but his latest, BRIGHTON, is his best. I couldn’t stop reading.
This was my first book by Michael Harvey. I couldn’t have picked a better introduction to his insightful, gritty and gut-wrenching prose. I know it’s an over-used description but I really couldn’t put it down. A new favorite author.
I bought this on a whim and was rewarded with a whole new world of very realistic characters that won’t be soon forgotten. I plan to check out the other novels by this author. I hope many others take a chance on this novel, it’s worth your time. Be patient and be rewarded.
I bought this book because I saw Stephen King had recommended it on twitter, it was definitely worth the buy. This book was twisted and suspenseful, it was super good, i sped through the pages, eager to know who the killer was.
Could not get interested in it. Read about half.
REALLY dark novel of two friends who grow up in the rough and tumble Boston neighborhood of Brighton. The friends go through a tragic incident during their teens which unites them forever although they wind up in vastly different adulthoods. Their “reunion” is through a complicated connection to their teen incident. Great characters and a good read.
Good crime tale. Interesting characters.
Not as gripping as promised. My experience as a reporter probably made is less believable.
Michael Harvey is a rising novelist. This book held me from start to finish, especially the ending. It’s sad, with a sense of inevitability, but the powerful writing and tight plot held me. I’ve since read other work by Harvey, and he’s a quality crime writer. Michael Connelly should look to his laurels.
I’ve found a new favorite author. Buying his other books.
It was a good Boston based story reaching back into the past. Very interesting; believable mafia-like storyline and absorbing reading.
Great depiction of a difficult childhood, a lower class neighborhood during the 1970s and those who leave and those who stay.
BRIGHTON is a masterpiece of crime fiction, filled with fascinating characters and sparkling dialogue and visceral atmosphere and riveting tension, plus no shortage of terrific twists.
Living in Massachusetts, many of the locations were familiar to me. Though I had no idea how bad growing up in Brighton/Dorchester/Boston was during the 70’s/80’s. Really opened my eyes! Good read! I kept thinking I was reading Dennis Lehane, though.
Great story of friendship and relationships with a mystery in the mix.
Whitey Bulger would have liked it!
This story has so many twists and turns, I did not see the end coming. Totally unpredictable. An awesome read!
Slow read had to put it down
First I have read by Harvey, but I will be following him closely. Brighton was a great read!
