An ancient highlander who’s never been allowed to love. A modern woman who keeps men at arm’s length. Can their passion overcome their pasts?Althea Jarden’s botanical fieldwork keeps her happily busy, but it has kept her from relationships as well—by design. Because deep passions can overwhelm her, she concluded long ago that a conventional life was not for her. She’s learned to depend on … learned to depend on herself. But all the self-reliance in the world can’t prepare her for being taken to ancient Scotland and what she finds there.
Chieftain Brennus Skaraven would like nothing better than to remain dead, his legendary clan buried and forgotten. Anything would be preferable to suffering the manipulations of the druids. But when a strange lass comes crashing into his life, he discovers more than a reason to live. He finds the one thing that had always been denied to him and his kind—love.

I rarely give up on a book but a little over halfway through and it never got interesting.
The story ends on a cliffhanger, but the story was so repetitive I can’t bring myself to read the second book and put myself through more of the same story.
Rather hard to get into because I don’t usually read fantasy like this book. Then the book ended rather abruptly…unfinished in my opinion.
Dr. Althea Jarden is a botanist. She collects and tests plants to make new medicines. While seeking specimens in northern Scotland, the ground begins to shake and the earth opens up. Suddenly, she finds herself falling downward, endlessly. When she finally lands, not only is she badly scratched and bruised from the fall, but everything looks different. It takes her a while to realize she is no longer at the same location…she can’t be…nothing looks the same.
When this shift occurs, it affects not only modern day time but also souls who occupied space on the planet almost two-thousand years ago. These time-locked individuals have moved forward twelve hundred years in time…and Althea has moved backward seven-hundred years. They meet in the fourteenth century. Talk about culture shock!
And so begins the new Immortal Highlander – Clan Skaraven series. The reader is in for another epic series of stories about prominent members of Clan Skaravin and their enemies, who also traveled back in time. In this book we are introduced to Brennus, Clan Chieftan and a select few of his closest members. You will learn who they are, and why they have been brought back. As with the previous series, we meet an enemy force that seems indomitable and intent on destroying the Clan. Imagine the surprise on learning about this strange woman who is suddenly thrust into the mix. Not only is Althea introduced into the mix, but also four other women who also traveled through the same vortex.
This epic tale is filled with mystery, devious plots and even more devious individuals, as well as powerful men who are honorable and work to establish balance in a place filled with strange challenges. To say this is a fabulously engaging story in underselling! This is one series you will not want to miss.
While burning up my reader copy of this book, I was fanning myself because, let’s face it, this one is also packing some serious heat. The kind of heat that happens when an ancient warrior meets a modern day warrior…and fortunate readers are gifted with a ring side seat of this adventure.
I am please to say Hazel Hunter has woven some serious magic once again and readers will be pleased with the outcome. As for me, I think the lady has once again earned a full five star review for this fabulous time-travel story. This can be read as a stand alone story but you will be begging for more immortals before you finish and thankfully we have been informed there are more to follow.
