Oh man, You do not want to miss this book by Rachelle. Her characters are soo wonderfully written and you will fall in love with every single one. This is the sweetest story ever in the world, but you will need your tissues to wipe your eyes. Please read this, you won’t be dissapointed
This is my very first book by Rachelle Stevensen, and I am really glad I took the chance, this story is short, cute and steamy. The characters are really innocent and there’s not a bad bone in either one of the main characters. It is narrated in third person.
We get a really good view on their past, so we can appreciate the connection they feel for each other. They have this really intense relationship since the moment they meet and so things escalate really fast.
The story starts with Sienna and Brek. Sienna has had a hard past, losing her family and her voice on the same day was nothing but hard, so she decided to spend all her life secluded and alone since there’s no one she cares for anymore. That changes when an attempt of burglary take her by surprise bringing memories back. The first person to come to her rescue is Sheriff McGuire. The moment Brek look at her, she was his, he felt the need to protect her and love her. But things are not easy, the burglar that has been breaking into the homes of the town has a plan for Sienna, but Brek is willing to give everything to make her safe.
Brek’s Obsession by Rachelle Stevensen is a dual virgin, instalove, contemporary romance with a touch of suspense told mostly in third person, dual POV. It also includes two chapters from the villain’s perspective.
Sienna is a recluse living with traumatic mutism ever since she witnessed a horrific event at age nine. Brek is the chief of police. They meet when he responds to a call about a break in. There has been a string of burglaries in town that have been been escalating, and Sienna may be in danger.
Plenty of people enjoy instalove romances, but I’m not one of them. I struggle to find them believable. I don’t buy it, and very few authors writing instalove are skilled enough to really sell it to me. My problem with instalove is the lack of relational development between characters before they jump into something. As a reader, I’m supposed to believe they have genuine feelings for each other when there’s no basis for them, when realistically all they feel is lust. There’s nothing wrong with lust, but for it to become love, the characters need to interact and connect beyond the initial physical attraction. Otherwise, their relationship seems shallow. It’s not normal for a man to lay eyes on a woman he’s never met before and instantly think she’s the love of his life, and that he can’t wait to marry and impregnate her, as if it’s a foregone conclusion. That’s not only unrealistic, it’s creepy. And I just don’t buy it. Unfortunately, this book wasn’t an exception for me.
Aside from the instalove, which may or may not be your cup of tea, the author has good command of the English language, and shows promise. She clearly has talent and can write. The scene depicting Sienna’s traumatic childhood event was gripping. I also didn’t notice any typos or misspellings, and that’s very rare. I commend the author for her ability to produce such a clean manuscript without utilizing a professional editor. There were a few sentences with issues of verb tense agreement, some choppy dialogue from time to time, and a few plot holes. These things on top of the instalove made it difficult for me to suspend belief and become immersed in the story. It has good bones. A developmental edit would be beneficial in taking it from a story that’s decent to one that’s great.
Two unlikely companions met and found that unlikeliness as something missing in their life; two opposites attract. This book was an instalove story that heavy on the MCs emotional scar and some physical scars too. It was more into a beautiful story of a series of unfortunate events and how to keep your positivity intact. Both MCs went through motion and almost numb when they met.
