A chilly breeze…and another dead body. Raina Sun thought cleaning her grandma’s house in San Francisco to prepare for Chinese New Year would be a breeze. Instead, she finds her deceased grandfather’s secret journal and ends up French kissing the train tracks in a mugging incident. After putting the move on her grandma, her grandfather’s BFF took an elevator ride straight to the Heavenly Gates. … the Heavenly Gates. And the second time Raina ends up flat on her back without a man in sight, she suspects the Year of the Monkey would leave her skulking in cold damp places where family secrets are better off dying with the dead.

Great Book. A must read.
Everyone should have a Grandmother like Po Po!
Raina Sun is an unwilling investigator, in spite of her Chinese intuition, but when a family friend turns up dead she cannot deny her mother’s request to investigate and when her deceased grandfather’s journal comes to light she is compelled to see if it includes clues to his secret second family in China. She is already in trouble with her large extended family because of the three million dollars he left for her to care for his second family. Since she promised him to keep their existence secret, she cannot explain her inheritance and they all believe she schemed to get his money.
This is the first book in this series that I have read and I definitely want to read more. Po Po, Raina’s grandmother, is a hoot! She adds a delightful element of comedy to the most serious scene.
I loved learning about Chinese culture.
I liked this book very much. The characters are great, the mysteries are solid and it’s just a nice fun read.
Once again we are taken on a fun/mysterious adventure with Raina & PoPo. We learn more about the mysterious husband of PoPo and even then we are still left with a cliffhanger! Hummmm? I am hooked on this series – I don’t ever want to see it end….
Fun read. I kinda wish I had her grandma….
Raina’s adventures in this intriguing tale kept me in suspense until the end!
This is one a series of books about a black sheep daughter of a Chinese family in San Francisco’s Chinatown and her adventures with her grandmother and various and sundry relatives.
I love the characters in this series. The Grandma PoPo again doesn’t disappoint. Poor Raigna Sun has to deal with family, murder, and secrets as usual. Loved it as usual.
Fun reading. Family relationships were on the rocks, especially where Raine was concerned. She had a murder to solve. Plenty of things to laugh about mixed in with sad happenings.
I enjoyed reading this book very much. The characters and story were so real i thought i was right there with them.
Love ninja grandma lol
Although I didn’t understand the Chinese traditions and words, I found this book very interesting.
The Chinese love of honor runs through this story. Very interesting anecdotes about Chinese superstitions and customs. And, a great plot.
Enjoy learning about Chinese culture through this author. Look forward to more books by Ms Tan
Funny and a side of Chinese culture I did not know about. I’ll read more
