Rule #1 Hands off my best friend’s kid sisterRule #2 See rule number oneRule #3 Seriously, don’t even think about touching EmmaEmma Kane is my new room mate. My very off limits room mate. My gorgeous, sassy, hot as hell room mate.I try to keep my distance. To ignore her soft laugh, her intense eyes, her sweet smile. And that groan, the one she makes over her morning coffee–Alright, the feisty … morning coffee–
Alright, the feisty college student is driving me out of my mind.
I can still keep my hands off her.
I double down on my rules. Draw that line between friends and lovers.
Then she presses her red lips to mine.
And, suddenly, it’s obvious.
There’s no way in hell I can resist her.
From the author: Breaking the Rules is a smoking hot standalone brother’s best friend romance with an alpha hero and a feisty heroine who brings him to his knees. Come see why readers say “no one writes broken bad boys like Crystal Kaswell.”

Another great, steamy and emotional “brother’s best friend” romance from the queen of broken bad boys Crystal Kaswell.
I absolutely loved, loved, loved this book. At the first chapter, the author, Crystal Kaswell, had me hooked. She does such an outstanding job using words to paint a picture of what is happening, it is almost like watching a movie, while reading it, because you can picture it in your mind. It is so much more than just your standard falls for your best friend’s little sister romance. She did such a great job developing the characters of Emma and Hunter, that I felt like I knew them personally. There is some seriousness within it, as Hunter is an alcoholic, freshly out of rehab, needing a place to live and a job, after his brothers have severed their relationship. There is also the guilt, that he suffers, after getting with Emma. Then, along side this seriousness, there are so many hilarious, funny, laugh out loud parts, that makes this book so fun to read. I did not want to go to bed, or to work, because I was enjoying this book so much, so I definitely recommend it.
Absolutely loved this book! Emma and Hunter are the perfect couple, both a little broken in their own way. Crystal’s Inked Hearts boys just keep getting better and better. Can’t wait to read the next one!
Brother’s best friend romance
I really enjoy the way Crystal Kaswell wrings every drop of emotion and pain from her readers and characters. Here, two people who are clearly attracted to one another must try to deny their feelings and desires in order to avoid some uncomfortable situations and conversations. Emma and Hunter know each other because of her older brother, Brendan, a close friend to Hunter. He’s conflicted by his friendship and promises to Brendan, while Emma knows her brother will flip is she goes for the broken man who has held her attentions for years. Can breaking all the rules give them a chance at real happiness and a future together, or will it only lead to heartbreak? Mmmmm, dilemmas, dilemmas! I voluntarily read an advanced copy of the book for an honest review.
Call me a sucker for a great off limits roommate romance because…uh, I totally am. Guilty as charged. There’s no guilt whatsoever, though, in the thrill from this smokin’ new read by Crystal Kaswell. This lady knows how to work her chemistry like a mad scientist. Feisty banter, memorable characters, awesome lovin’, and some wild surprises. Breaking the Rules wins all my stars this week!
AUDIOBOOK REVIEW
This was my first Crystal Kaswell book.
It didn’t catch my attention as well as I would have hoped. It was a great story with humor and some strong themes that honestly (IMO) didn’t get resolved very well. I wish it would have given us more in-depth to the healing instead of the way the author went.
Overall it’s an interesting story but maybe just not for me.
You want to know my immediate reaction after finishing this book?
I was shaking my head in disbelief.
I can not believe that after reading more than 15 of Crystal’s books, I am still surprised at just how much I love each and every one of them.
I want her characters to be my friends.
I want to be able to see first hand 2 people falling in love so deeply.
Im not even sure how to put into words how wonderful Emma and Hunter’s story was.
All I can say is, READ THIS BOOK!
Read all of her books!
There is not a bad one in the bunch.
Note for Crystal, the moment you introduced Wes, Griffin and even Chase, I started begging you to please write their stories and share them with us.
So pretty pretty please.
Happy reading!

This is the newest book in the Inked Heart Series and I have to say I loved it.
This is the story of of Emma and Hunter. Emma is Brendon’s “baby” sister and Hunter is his long time friend . The Rules were simple for both of them: Don’t sleep with each other.
Emma has a secret that is mentally crushing her, even though she is “hot” for Hunter.
Hunter has a secret of his own and he can’t stop thinking about Emma.
Fate throws the 2 of them together, can they fight the heat between them?
Will they share the burdon of the secrets they are carrying, so they can heal and move on?
This story covers issues that are current in today’s news’s stories and are quite relevent.
It shows that time, patience and love go a long way yo help the ones we love in our life.
There is great set up, in this book, for new characters and more stoeies, which is a great bonus to all Ink Heart Fans.
The sex scenes are hot and steamy, and of course there is an HEA
I Really, freaking loved this book! I’m loving this series. It has awesome characters, fantastic storylines each book is different from the other one. There is also one that has gone through some angst, trauma in their lives. They are flawed and I LOVE them. As expected in this author’s books we got really hot steamy sexy chemistry in-between Emma and Hunter This also was an emotional book due to how alcohol abuse can effect your life, and the ones you love the most. Emma also had her own trauma she was dealing with alone. These two were perfect for each other.
Recovery needs love and support once you are ready to accept the help and the change!
It also had it’s funny bantering smoldering moments! Inked Hearts is a fantastic series I highly recommended all the books in the series, they’ve all been 5 to me!
This can be read as a standalone, no cliffhangers, but it’s nice to get the background story of each of the friends/co-workers, as you read about each of them crashing into love . They all get their own special HEA. I especially love the little extra epilogue that Crystal Kaswell sends us from each book….. that’s just extra special to me as a reader I truly appreciate it!!! Thank you so much
We’ve been getting little glimpses of Emma throughout the Inked Hearts series so I was excited when her book finally came up (I was excited that she got her own story too!). Hunter is finally sober after years of being drunk all of the time. He’s broken, lost, and hurting. Not only did his older brother kick him out of the apartment they shared and his job, but he also kicked him out of his life. Emma is also broken. Months ago she went through a terrible incident that she refuses to talk about. These two become fast friends and not only help heal each other, but make life more worth living. As with all of the prior character’s in this series I fell in love with Hunter and Emma. Once they finally stopped fighting the attraction it was game on and they were all over each other (even while trying to keep it a secret). Though their love was hot and heavy it was also a slow burn, a good slow burn because of Emma’s issues. There wasn’t to much romantic drama which I didn’t mind one bit. It seemed like the perfect combination between romantic issues and family issues. The author really helped show the family dynamic when it comes to an alcoholic and their issues. I have to admit that as much as I loved Hunter, I loved Emma more. She may have had her issues but she was a fighter and she wasn’t afraid to stand up for herself and the ones she loved. I loved how she not only stood up for herself and Hunter to her brother, but how she stood up to Chase in Hunter’s defense too. She’s a surviver! Ms Kaswell has a great eye when it comes to writing broken bad boys and their equally broken heroine. We also got to meet some new members to the inked hearts family that I’m looking forward to getting to know in the future. *I voluntarily read an advanced copy of this book for my honest and unbiased review.* (less)
Wow! This is my first book in this series but am absolutely in love. The struggles these two had to overcome in this book are very realistic things in life and to see their strength to push through was nothing less but amazing. I am so happy to see that they finally get the HEA and hope to see more of them in the other books of this series.
Great Story, Great Audible Listen Heartfelt & Emotional
Breaking the Rules
By: Crystal Kaswell
Narrated by: Kai Kennicott, Wen Ross
Another great book by Crystal Kaswell. I adore Crystal Kaswell’s writing style, she has a way with words, the dialogue she writes for her characters is realistic and relatable. Same goes for the characters they are realistic and relatable too. “Breaking the Rules” is Hunter and Emma story. Each have their own baggage, Emma went thru a traumatic incident and is having a hard time dealing. Hunter has demons in his closest and family issues. Can they survive their past, can they become more than friends? I loved the chemistry between the two, also loved how Hunter was there for Emma when he found out what she went thru. What he did was amazing. I highly recommend this story, it is fast paced and captivating, filled with lots of emotion, drama (some family), angst, romance, friendship and a nice touch of humor. Thank you for another great story!
I listened to the Audible edition, Kai Kennicott and Wenn Ross are fabulous narrators and voice performers. They give the characters heart and emotion which brings them to life from the pages to your ears. They add the perfect dramatic flair to their storytelling which enhances the story to another level of greatness. Thanks for another entertaining listen it is always a pleasure to listen to you both.
This story has a little of everything, sweet romance, sexy overbearing and frustrating alpha make and a beautiful woman who has the right heart and spirit. Thoroughly enjoying and entertaining.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
If you think that you are about to read just a “my brothers best friend” book you would be wrong. Crystal Kaswell weaves so much more into her stories. Breaking the Rules is real life, and shows us the dark side of depression and how it can affect relationships. The story is gritty, raw and beautiful. A wonderful read from beginning to the end.
Crystal Kaswell has done it again! I absolutely love this series! Hunter and Emma did not disappoint! I’ve been looking forward to Emma’s story for a while. The story revolves around a sweet couple. Both the hero and the heroine have a hard past. Together, they heal each other in a love-story for the ages! I enjoy reading romances that involve healing, especially when the couple comes together to heal each other. The story is a slow-burn, romantic interlude with lots of sexy moments that will knock your socks off! Love! Love! Love! I received an advanced copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
Breaking the Rules is book 5 in the Inked Heart’s Series. We’ meet Emma in Breaking the Rules and see glimpses of her throughout the series, she Brandon’s little sister. Hunter is Brandon’s troubled high school friend. Hunter agonizes over his past mistakes and Emma is working through a tramatic event. They find healing in each other. Love Hunter is turns out to be loyal and always thinking about what’s best for Emma. This is an heart felt book. Must Read Series!
A great addition to the series. I loved seeing our favorite characters from earlier in the series along with some new ones. Hunter and Emma are both damaged and learning how to exist in their new reality. What starts out as an antagonistic relationship quickly turns to more. I enjoyed watching their relationship evolve. A story full of heart, passion, family, and healing.
Wow, Crystal’s books really put you into the lives of her characters. They are so intense and you can actually feel the pain of what they are going through. Hunter was trying so hard to earn forgiveness from those he hurt while drinking. I’m not surprised at his drinking if he learned it from watching his parents do it.
Emma is so strong to be so young. She knows what she wants from Hunter and she never judged him by his mistakes. His understanding of her and what she needed was so sweet and loving. They truly needed and deserved each other.
This is my first book of the series. Now I have to backtrack and read the others. I know they will be just as great cause I loved this book.
I voluntarily agreed to review this book. My review is my own honest opinion.
Just when I think a Crystal Kaswell book can’t get better than the last one, she proves me wrong. Hunter is finally getting sober after years of alcohol addiction. Hunter is out of rehab with a job at Inked Hearts and crashing at Brendon’s place. Emma, Brendon’s younger sister, is going to college and works the front desk at Inked Heaarts. Emma is struggling with a date gone wrong but doesn’t want to be viewed as a victim. Brendon warns Hunter and Emma away from each while also telling each of them to look out for the other. As Emma and Hunter spend time together, they become friends and realize they enjoy each other’s company. The attraction between Emma and Hunter grows the closer they get. As they begin to open up to each other about their demons, they help each other heal. I loved Hunter and Emma. Their relationship grows slowly as they learn to love and trust one another. Can Hunter show his brothers and his friends that he is serious about remaining sober and making up for the mistakes he made while he was drunk all the time? How will Brendon react when he learns of Hunter and Emma’s relationship? Can Hunter help Emma heal from her pain? Can Emma show Hunter he is worthy of her love? I love how love of family and friends is important to both Hunter and Emma. I love how Emma stood up to Brendon and Hunter’s brother, Chase, on behalf of Hunter. Breaking the Rules by Crystal Kaswell is a must have book! Breaking the Rules is a well written book full of love, passion, heart break, witty banter, and lots of angst. Love all the characters in the Inked Hearts series. Definitely recommend getting Breaking the Rules by Crystal Kaswell. I received an ARC of this book, and I am leaving my honest review.
