I really couldn’t get into this story. The first half of the book is all told from Mia’s point of view, and honestly it got a little tiring to read her thoughts. There was a lot more “story” in her head, than actual conversations with Max. When it finally gets around to Max’s point of view, I already had my opinion of him. It took pretty much the rest of the book before I could even fathom them as a couple. There were a lot of misunderstandings between them, but I still didn’t like their behavior. Max was a jerk, and Mia came off weak. The ending was sweet though, and I liked that they were able to get their HEA.
I voluntarily reviewed an advanced readers copy of this book.
How to Write a Successful Rom-Com a lá Annika Martin
Create a heroine who is sassy, witty, hilarious, and a knock out
Incorporate a hero who is worth billions, make him look like a jerk, but then give him a heart of gold
Build the most delicious chemistry between the main H and h, set it up as hate and make them fall in love
Give the h supportive friends who help set up the funny of the story and walk with her when she struggles
Put a bunch of funny dialogue in the h’s mouth and sit back, listening for the LOLs of the readers
Yes. All of these components are found in Breaking the Billionaire’s Rules. I highly recommend this read if you’re feeling sad, you’re feeling happy, or you just need a good laugh and a bit of a cry.
First and foremost, it’s been awhile since I’ve fallen in love with the male hero before the heroine in a book. Typically, I read rom-coms with women who impress me, even those who might be a bit “ditzy.” But in this book, I was a fan of Max Hilton. Not the image Max Hilton, the real Max. Why? He illustrates the reality of living in our 21st multi-media world. From the outset, after reading his book, we’re supposed to hate him. He’s a misogynist. He sees women as objects. His rules are demeaning. However, that image is one that is manufactured as a mask, much like the masks we create on our social media. The real Max is sensitive, really sensitive. His past is fraught with trauma and pain, yet he hides it behind a cool, confident exterior. It isn’t until Mia re-enters Max’s life that we finally meet the “real” Max. When that happens, there are fireworks and chemistry and all of the perfect “happily-ever-afters.” When Mia finally recognizes the true Max, this book becomes gold; Max becomes gold as a hero.
Mia is all of us: confident until someone makes her feel less. She is a theater actress. In that world, she struggles with finding success; however, she works a job that provides for her, even though it might be demeaning. In her day-to-day life, we can trust that Mia knows herself, and she’s happy with her life. When Max enters the picture, Mia sees her self as “not enough.” This insecurity fuels many of the funny moments in this story, but it also reminds us of the stress of relationships, about our simple want for love and acceptance. While her character exists to bring Max to his knees, we commiserate with her lack of confidence in taking on this task. And I empathized with her through the first part of this book.
Overall, this story has a little bit of everything: humor, heartbreak (the part where Max finds the chart broke my heart), and love. There were moments when I was laughing out loud (the cheese puff scene when Mia eats Max’s cheese puffs and shows the evidence on her body), tearing up, and feeling happiness for the beauty of their eventual HEA. Annika Martin’s Breaking the Billionaire’s Rules is the rom-com you need to read. It clearly checks all the boxes.
Overall:
This book took me out of a reading rut it was filled with witty humor and charm i wish there was a sequel so I didn’t have to say goodbye to Mia and Max I did have issues with connecting Max’ s character with his POV it’s like reading about 2 different characters and the begging was a bit rough there’s no ease into the story it just drops you in the middle of a conversation and gives you issues you’re left trying to figure out and catch up but towards the end things start piecing together but they really should have been better explained early on since they really don’t have a huge impact on the plot still a really sweet story and over all pleasant read With the most horrendous food delivery idea ever
No one makes me laugh quite like Annika Martin, and I devour her romantic comedies with a zeal. Breaking the Billionaire’s Rules had me simultaneously smiling, blushing and giggling from the very beginning until the end, and I loved every minute of it. Mia and Max were bitter enemies throughout high school, and although it’s been ten years, they’ve never let go of their anger or grudges. Mia is a struggling actress, while Max has already achieved fame and fortune by building a lifestyle brand based on his persona. When she’s compelled to deliver his lunch to him in a cat suit, she’s determined to fight through her self-doubt and embarrassment and not let Max “win.” Their reunion and subsequent encounters are electrifying and hilarious as they fight and taunt each other while also trying to ignore the unrelenting sexual pull between them. They bicker their way towards a climactic and steamy unraveling, and they come together in a fiery union. As they begin to open up and reevaluate their past and their resentments, they fall into love. Breaking the Billionaire’s Rules is romantic comedy at its most entertaining, sexiest and all-around best.
ARC provided, but this review was voluntarily and honestly written.
I loved this book! it was laugh out loud funny, heartbreaking, quirky, angsty, and sexy all wrapped into one delicious book. It is a standalone with an HEA.
Ahhh Max!!! Max Hilton is a sexy, swoon-worthy billionaire. He was child prodigy He came from money but made himself into a billionaire by writing a book titled, “The Max Hilton Playbook: Ten Golden Rules for Picking up the Hottest Girl in the Room.” He is known as a player and overachiever. His life wasn’t as perfect as it seemed though.
Mia is a multi-talented, struggling aspiring actress, singer, dancer. She doesn’t have a lot of money but what she lacks in money, she makes up for in personality, passion, and talent. I love Mia’s fierce loyalty to the people she cares about and her quirky, sassy personality. She brings so much to this story.
They both attended a performing arts school. They soon became enemies hell bent on making each other’s lives hell. Fast forward ten years and Max has made it and Mia is still struggling, trying to make it in the entertainment world. Instead, she finds herself working as a sandwich delivery girl for Meow Squad. One of her regular deliveries ends up being to Max. Imagine the humiliation! From here hilarity ensues. Their witty and hilarious banter kept me entertained the entire book.
I loved the chemistry between Max and Mia. They are wonderful characters with a ton of personality. Annika Martin did a great job of writing a hilarious, swoon-worthy rom com that had my heart beating fast at times, breaking at others, and laughing out loud. I gobbled up every last word! It was highly entertaining with a twist at the end. I thoroughly enjoyed it and highly recommend reading it! I love Annika Martin’s books and this one is no different.

I received an ARC in return for an honest review. This was a cute enemy to lover romance. I loved the back and forth between Mia and Max when she brought his lunch. I’m not gonna lie it sort of fell for me once they got together but that is mostly because of personal preference. He was so into her and I guess it was a lot for me. Again, it was a cute story and worth the read.
3.75 stars. This was a pretty cute book! Breaking the Billionaire’s Rules is Mia and Max’s story. Mia and Max were high school enemies, after a break fling that ended spectacularly. Now years later, Mia is an aspiring actress in NYC, auditioning for Broadway and moonlighting as a lunch delivery girl in office buildings. Max is a CEO of a lifestyle company based on his look and persona. He has become a big celebrity, and he even wrote a book right out of high school on how to pickup women. When Mia gets an assignment asking for her by name to deliver lunch to Max, she is shocked and horrified. She thinks he has hired her to deliver to lunch to lord their status differences over her. Mia decides to use Max’s playbook of pickup rules on him to give him a taste of his own medicine. But everything is not as it seems. The two both have misunderstandings about what happened between them in their past and in the present. As Mia delivers Max lunch daily, they find they also still have chemistry and the two are able to work everything out between them.
I enjoyed this book! It is funny, without being silly or over the top, cute and an easy read. I liked Mia a lot. She was spunky and sweet. The situations she found herself in were crazy and fun. Max was okay. I didn’t dislike his character but didn’t especially love him. He was a bit mysterious. I did think they made a good couple. It was obvious they were each other’s perfect partner and “one that got away”. I definitely felt the connection between them. The story was fun and original. I liked the combo of enemies to lovers and second chance romance. The “enemies” part was not too hardcore enemies, more of a misunderstanding, which I’m glad because that is not my favorite trope. I do think the last half of the book felt a little rushed after a slower burn first half. I didn’t totally believe the buildup from like to love because it came on a bit too quickly. Still, I enjoyed this book in general.
Overall, this was just a fun, easy read. I enjoyed it and definitely think it’s worth reading. I look forward to more from this romcom series and from Ms. Martin!
It has been awhile since I have laughed out loud from a book. I believe the last time was when reading Annika Martin’s, The Billionaire’s Wake-up-call Girl. So, maybe it is no surprise that her latest, Breaking the Billionaire’s Rules makes me chuckle. Told from two perspectives, this story is about Mia, a struggling actress in NYC, who delivers lunches for the Meow Squad, a service for those who want food truck meals delivered to their work or home. She has just been assigned a deliver to the offices owned by Max Hilton, a former classmate from her performing arts high school. They were mortal enemies and have not seen each other since.
The first part of the book is told from Mia’s point of view. Max has become a lifestyle phenomenon. After his dating book, The Max Hilton Playbook: Ten Golden Rules for Picking up the Hottest Girl in the Room becomes a runaway best seller, he establishes a brand in line with the Most Interesting Man in the World. It promotes the ultimate playboy lifestyle. The Max Hilton Playbook teaches men how to manipulate women into dating them. A couple of Mia’s friends have been hurt by men who have ascribed to the philosophy. So, these lovely women devise a plan to get back at Mr. Max Hilton by employing his own rules against him. At stake is a pair of pink Louboutins.
For a better part of the book, we see Max as this out of touch, vain, villain who teaches others to be manipulative and arrogant. By this time, we are frothing at the mouth to see Max get his due. Then we get the other perspective and the shoe drops. This switch is such a touch of genius. Misunderstandings are the bread and butter of contemporary romance, but Ms. Martin gives us a little Wicked move that changes the whole game. She reaffirms what we know to be true: The more we give people space to tell their own stories instead of filling in the blanks, the more complete the picture.
I have read Annika Martin’s other books, but I feel like when she is writing romantic comedy, there is a certain sense of freedom in her work and her true colors shine (think Meow Squad and Cheese Puffs). I can just imagine her gleefully typing away on her computer at her local eclectic coffeeshop laughing maniacally and concocting the next plot twist. All to say, I hope there is more to romcom to come, Annika Martin.
Aspiring actress Mia Corelli works part time delivering food-truck orders in a cat suit to office workers and is mortified to learn she has to deliver lunch to handsome billionaire Max Hilton, her high school nemesis. Max launched his empire on the success of a best-selling book on how to land the hottest girl in the room. Mia’s friends Kelsey and Jada dated jerks who used techniques from that book and they want justice and come up with a plan for Mia to use Max’s system to wrap him around her little finger and bring him to his knees but will it work? And what happens when Max finds out the truth?
Breaking the Billionaire’s Rules is a funny, angsty and steamy story that will have you hooked from the first page right up to the end
N AROUSING SMOKING HOT ENEMIES TO LOVERS ROMANCE THAT WAS ENTERTAINING AND IRRESISTIBLY APPEALING AND 100% ENGAGING!
Annika Martin won my heart with Breaking The Billionaire’s Rules. Fun and sexy with plenty of heart its no wonder I was instantly enamored with this story. The characters have so much feeling and are quite amazing with one heck of a past that sucker punches you right in the gut. It was sizzling hot and funny with some fabulous wit! I enjoyed it IMMENSELY!
Breaking The Billionaire’s Rules gets a SMOKING HOT FIVE SHOOTING STARS!
This is the first I have read of Annika Martin and have to say I never laughed so hard. I loved the whole cat costumes and the way they are brought back together. Mia is a woman bent on her mission to succeed for her friends but forgot to keep her heart out of the way. Now Max there were times he seemed sincere then cold yet with Mia we see a vulnerable side that is loveable. Being the first time I read of Annika it was really good and look forward for more of this author.
“I received an eBook copy from the publisher for the purpose of an honest review. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own.”
Thank God for snow days, otherwise today would have been a professional mess! I started the book late and loved the vibe of the girlfriends in the first chapter. I felt like I could have been in that group! I was still up at 2 am laughing hysterically at Antonio’s shenanigans and Milano…cookies! Mia is perfect and plucky and I loved her commitment to the cause. Max was so perfectly vulnerable and swoonworthy. My favorite Max moment was at the bar meeting with her friends the first time. And any book is not complete until we get Smuckers!
The mastermind known as Annika Martin has done it again. She has taken the billionaire trope to new levels. With her perfectly crafted story telling mixed with an intelligent and witty heroine, this book is everything you’re missing in your life right now. It’s not just another billionaire romance. It’s about second chances, it’s about first loves and learning to forgive.
Story Line: Max and Mia have a past. Like 10 years ago and they’re high school seniors. Yeah. Way back. They were in a musical together and sparks went off like sparklers on the forth of July. Their fling ended before it truly began and now we fast forward to the present. Mia has some seriously amazing bff’s who are supportive, funny and oh so sweet. They help Mia hatch one of the funniest plans I’ve ever had the pleasure of reading. You see, Max wrote a book back in the day about how to snag the hottest chick ever. The girls devise a plan to use that book against him. The result is utterly brilliant. However, how long can she keep it up? How long until she can’t tell if she’s playing the part or what is igniting between them is real? The journey to find out was so freaking good. Trust me, you won’t be able to put this book down.
Interaction: The dynamic between Max and Mia is a dream come true for me. They both have these cement walls up to keep their feelings out of their interactions, and it works so well for their characters. But even in those moments of harsh words and heated stares, there’s not a single doubt in my mind that these two are soulmates. They give as much as they get. And when everything comes to a head? Absolutely amazing. I truly could not adore these characters anymore than I do at this moment. Mia and her blinged out cat costume. Max and his tough guy exterior. It’s all so perfect.
Laundry: Believe me when I say, this slow burn is worth the wait. Max and Mia can’t hop into the sack or desk on page one. It wouldn’t make sense, nor would it allow for their undeniable chemistry to ignite and spread like wildfire. But when their defenses come down, it makes for some of the hottest laundry I’ve ever read. Just you wait. You’re going to be fanning yourself and looking around to make sure no one is reading over your shoulder because this hotness deserves some privacy.
Depth: I’ve said it once, I’ll say it a thousand times. This is not just another billionaire romance. Mia and Max have a second chance at letting their spark burn. Their past has left them both burnt and hurting. So yes, they definitely start off this novel as enemies. And it is an absolute joy to read as those cement walls come crumbling down and the truth finally arises. There were so many “aha” moments as well as swoon worthy ones too. Max may come across as an uber jerk, but in the end, he made his way into my top ten book boyfriend list. He’s that amazing.
Bottom line? Max and Mia will give you ALL THE FEELS. You will laugh, you will shed a tear, and you will be sitting on the edge of your seat praying these two can make things works. Spoiler alert. It’s a very happily ever after here.
I loved breaking his rules!
This is a second chance rom-com, & I love this author’s rom-coms so this one is no exception! I laughed out loud reading the first page, & it didn’t stop there. The first part of the book is in Mia’s POV which I adored, but I was waiting on Max’s POV so when it happened I was so elated! This is also a slow burn, so when Max & Mia finally kiss I rejoiced. The book really took off for me when we find out the what, how & why of what happened in high school between Mia & Max, & why Max wrote the book. When they both showed their vulnerabilities, I loved both characters even more than I did. The end made me smile so much; the whole book left me smiling! If you love a quick, fun, romantic book with characters you care about that transports you for a few hours like I do, then read this book!
This read is so damn funny! What happens when ur nemesis writes a playbook on how to pick up woman? And makes millions, gains popularity, and u find out ur friends have suffered the consequences of said playbook? Well u get even! This book will having u laughing ur a$$ off! Mia is off the charts and when she realizes Max is not quite who she thought, things take a quick turn for both of them. This is my first book by this author and it defs won’t be the last.
When I first read Annika Martin it was on a darker series and I didn’t know what to expect from something lighter from her. I was not disappointed in Breaking the Billionaire’s Rules, not by a long shot. This book was a very quick read for me, only because once I was in, I was entangled in it til the end. I found myself unable to put it down and read it in 2 sittings.
The book follows Max and Mia. Mia is a delivery girl, working for a company that requires her to dress in a cat costume. Much to her horror, one day her delivery now includes her arch rival from high school’s building, Max Hilton. From the first delivery, the two have a chemistry that is mixed with curiosity and pure hatred for one another. Watching their story unfold was quite entertaining, as I really didn’t know what to expect from it. From the minute Mia decides to play his own rule book on him, I couldn’t put this book down! Slowly the two breaks down each other’s walls, and when things crumble, who will be left standing in the remains of what is their rocky past and able to survive? You must grab this one to find out. It’s full of passion, twists, and snarkieness that I just love!
4.5 Stars An enemies-to-lovers, second chance romance that will have you laughing out loud.
Mia is an aspiring actress. As she waits for her big break, she is a lunch cart girl who brings you your lunch while dressed as a sexy cat! Yes, she knows that her job is embarrassing, but it’s only temporary.
Max was the guy in high school that tormented her. Now he’s a fashion mogul with the bank account to match. Mia has been hired to deliver him lunch!
Mia thinks Max his up to his old ways…just looking for a way to humiliate her. In her social media stalking she finds a guide that Max wrote on how to seduce a woman. The book sold millions and made him famous! Mia is going to get the ultimate revenge for her and all of womankind by turning the tables on Max and using his methods against him!
This story had the slow burn seduction, the absolutely hysterical antics that Mia resorted to to get her revenge and amazingly hot chemistry with sexy times. Max had depth and was so much more than his picture on the side of a billboard. Mia was sassy, totally outrageous and you will just love her! The two were the perfect storm once they worked out all their baggage! This was a super fun read and I totally recommend it!
I really enjoyed Breaking the billionaires rules it had a great story line the flow was perfect and the characters were likable . This is the fourth story that I’ve read by Annika Martin and it wont be my last I hope to see more from the secondary characters and Max / Mia . Loved the chemistry that Max and Mia shared they have a intense connection fueled by hatred or so they think . Once those two find what’s under the facade they were perfect for one another . Even though we were told of thire past I wish we would have gotten some flashback scenes but over all this is a laugh out loud romantic comedy you don’t want to miss out on .

Breaking the Billionaire’s Rules by Annika Martin, is funny, sexy and extremely enjoyable. This is Mia and Max’s story.
This book is a Second chance romance/ Romcom. You will laugh, be in tears on laughter then become an emotional mess, just to laugh all over again.
Annika’s writing is captivating. I enjoyed this book and cant wait to see what Annika brings us next
Max Hilton, previously known as Maxfield Miller, appears to be the ultimate playboy, the Millennial Dean Martin. Maximillion Plaza decorates the Manhattan skyline. Max’s brand is all about jet setting around the world, having cocktails by the pool with the beautiful Max Hilton girls, and power. His beautiful face adorns busses, billboards, and magazines. It is hard to believe that all of this originated from a book, The Max Hilton Playbook, which he wrote not long after graduating from The Shiz (The Soho High School for the Performing Arts). The book, an international best-selling pick-up guide, has become the “how to get girls by being an arrogant jerk” and is about to be turned around on him by none other than his high school rival.
Mia also graduated from The Shiz but her acting career hasn’t catapulted quite like Max’s. But you see, she is a triple threat just waiting for the perfect role. In the meantime, she works for the Meow Squad. It pays her rent and most importantly…it provides health insurance which is a must for up-and-coming actresses. Mia freaks out when Maximillion Plaza specifically requests for her to be their delivery person. First the first time in ten years, Mia will have to face Max wearing…the Meow Squad cat suit. Mia and her jilted friends quickly devise a plan to make Max pay for all of the men who followed The Max Hilton Playbook and ended up breaking their hearts. Mia will implement each technique with the hopes of bringing Max Hilton to his knees. However, Mia is uncertain if the “terminator” actually has a heart and if she can get through the plan with her own heart intact.
This is the first Annika Martin book that I’ve read and let me just say this…Annika has one sick sense of humor and I love it! Who comes up with a food delivery service named Meow Squad with women wearing cat suits making the deliveries? I mean, really? I could go SO many different directions with that BUT…I won’t. I read the majority of this book while driving on a daycation with friends who were giving me the side eye every time I burst out laughing. With laugh-lines still in place, I give Breaking the Billionaire’s Rules by Annika Martin 5 out of 5 propellers.
