Gripping suspense and drama in the wounded warrior world
Breaking his Code is an interesting techno-thriller/wounded warrior romance. A circle of vets who are living in a world of recovery, rediscovery, and reinvention have formed a cyber-security firm and landed a BIG client, only to see heir vaunted new software malfunction at every turn. Camilla, veteran, bomb disposal unit survivor, and code-writing genius has to juggle her PTSD, her imploding work project, her strained relationships to family and friends, and a new man, West, who makes her feel like the woman she wanted to be – before she went to war. It’s a well-told story, with a cast of characters you come to know and care about. This is a high-tension read, with industrial sabotage and hacking against million-dollar clients on the business side, and lots of anger, angst, and fears on the personal side. The romance adds more to the drama, and the end of the book resolves only some of the dilemmas begun in the novel. Clearly, there’s a sequel coming, and I’m curious enough to want more. My thanks to the author and to Hidden Gems for the ARC, this review is voluntary, independent, and uncompensated, and Breaking His Code is a good read. Hooah!
As an Army Nurse Corps vet married to a retired special ops vet, with all the sh#$% that comes with that, Patricia Eddy’s Breaking His Code, was painfully real at times. As I read to be taken away from day to day reality, I had to put this book down several times. I came close to giving it up and removing it from my device. But in the end, I finished it and I am glad I did!
In her author notes, Patricia writes that the characters in this book are “beautifully broken” . I guess that can be said for most of us. To be human means that while we strive for perfection, we fall way short of that goal most of the time. How we live and deal with our flaws is what makes us who we are. Patricia seems to understand that, maybe better than most of us. Her writing reflects her empathy for those of us who have survived the less than perfect and are better people because of it.
So, what I discovered as I persevered, and continued to read, is Patricia Eddy’s Breaking His Code may be an escape after all. It gives the reader a chance to see life through someone else’s eyes and experience them fixing their mistakes. This novel gives us broken souls hope that indeed “what doesn’t kill us, makes us stronger.” Reading this novel may turn out to be a safe way to work through our own issues, away from the scary reality and fears that plague us.
It turns out that Patricia Eddy is an excellent storyteller! Breaking His Code is full of edge of your seat action as well as melt your panties love scenes. It is a perfect balance between suspense and romance. It was well worth the time I took to read it. I have already added the rest of the series to my wishlist!
I loved how Cam finds solace from her demons in online gaming as you mostly see this in males. It was nice seeing the female also gaming. The chemistry between West and Cam is amazing and I could feel why they would connect together. There is some miscommunication which drove me crazy and some suspense but overall the story just grabbed me and kept me hooked.
Terrific Story & Narration Gripping & Heartfelt!
Breaking His Code
Away from Keyboard, Book 1
By: Patricia D. Eddy
Narrated by: Kale Williams, Lisa Zimmerman
I enjoyed this book immensely, the story is well written and told, it drew me right in, grabbing my attention and holding it the entire time. The storylines and characters are realistic, easy to relate to and connect with. Camilla “Cam” Delgado, former military, an explosives expert who was injured while on a mission in Afghanistan. She suffered permanent damage from those injuries, being a computer geek and great at coding she currently works on programing security systems for a company run by Royce, her former boss while serving. Other than her job Cam does not get out much, she does go online to unwind, she also visits VetNet where she meets out Veterans. She friended West, former Seal, owner of Krav Maga studio that is struggling financially a new fitness center opened up taking away some of his business, he has plans to expand but needs to obtain financial support to do so. He has taken a like to Cam and wants to meet her in person and take the relationship to another level. Cam has insecurities and battles her own inner demons but agrees to meet him. Their first meeting ends in disaster but he does not give up on her. I adored both these characters, perfectly imperfect, had real life problems and issues. I admired Cam’s strength and West for compromising, doing something he did not want to do to further his goals. I loved how everything plays out in this book, the story is cleverly plotted with plenty of drama, a touch of angst, some mystery, twist and turns, thrilling suspense, heartfelt and emotional moments and some hot romance. Patricia D. Eddy, thank you for another great story and emotional rollercoaster ride.
I listened to the Audible edition, Kale Williams and Lisa Zimmerman are fantastic narrators and voice artists. They do an awesome job portraying the characters, bringing them to life, giving each their own distinct voice making it easy to follow along and tell who is who. They grasp their character’s persona, capture all their emotions and project them into their performance. They are entertaining storytellers and pleasure to listen to. Thank you for the great listen
I’ve read book three in this series, and it compelled me to pick it up from the beginning. Just as in the third book, I found myself drawn to the main characters who are both a little broken from their past experiences and come together beautifully when they finally bare themselves to each other – faults, flaws and all.
Cam is smart, strong and determined, but her past mistakes and time spent serving left her lonely and wounded, both of which haunt her. West, as her counterpart, so badly wants to fix what he sees broken – in her, in himself, and in other wounded people – but needs Cam’s trust to finally get himself there.
It’s a thrilling story with plenty of action, sexiness and a satisfying ending.
Patricia Eddy did a tremendous job with this storyline. It all makes sense, logically developing an interesting contemporary subject. It made me really think about what our Veterans do for us in a more intimate way. IT security is on all our minds and it also gives a glimpse of the tremendous effort and detail involved for those serving the industry. The story was so well done, it could stand alone without all the sex scenes…although some of it rounded out the relationship between characters. This book stands out in a crowd of average such stories. Kudos to the author. (One thing I don’t know is how accurate the IT and Veteran issues are, but they seemed realistic to me – certainly to go into the amount of detail provided there was some real work put into it – highly appreciated.). Thank you to the author.
Ok read. At times it is all over the place, had to re read some parts. West and Cam both have past trauma and have different ways to cope. The beginning starts off really good but dies down and gets really slow. But it ended on a high note.
Breaking His Code by Patricia D. Eddy is the first book in her Away From Keyboard and is Cam and West story. Ms. Eddy is a new author to me and I’m anxious to read more about the rest of the guys on the K & R team especially Royce and Inara.
Camilla Delgado need to find out where the bugs are at in Oversight’s program before Emerald City Security signs off on the Coana hotel. But first she needs to find out why bugs keep happening, get her boss and former CO, Royce, to tell her what’s wrong and also help others in a VetNet chat room. She’s a former EOD (Explosive Ordinance Disposal) when a IED damaged her leg and hip. Plus West Sampson wants to play Halo when she gets home but wait did I mention he wants to date her? There will be a betrayal within the online chat room she belongs too all while trying to fix what’s wrong with their program so that the company stays in business.
West Sampson owns a dojo whose business has declined due to the new CrossFit gym nearby. He’s former Navy SEAL POW who needs money to teach a class for amputees if he can secure funding. When he meets Cam he doesn’t expect fall in love with a prickly coder especially when he decides to take on a K & R rescue mission where nothing is guaranteed especially coming back alive. Can Wes and Cam get beyond their pain to start a life together?
This is a new to me author, it will not be my last! A beautifully written story of Cam and West, both former military and both scarred and imperfect. After challenges are overcome true love is found. I am looking forward to meeting the rest of this series! Glad I found you Ms. Eddy!
First book in this series I read. I love that they are prior military. Cam was injuried pretty bad on a mission and now works for Royce in security who was her LT when she was overseas. He has his own problems to deal with. Then there is West he’s a Navy Seal. He’s trying to keep his buisness venture going anyway he can. These two meet online playing war games of all things. There is betrayal, intrigue, secrets and family ties to be mended. Really enjoyed this book and can’t wait to read the next one.
This book Breaking His Code was given to me in exchange for an honest review. This is the first book in the Away From Keyboard Series and what a way to start a series. I absolutely loved getting to meet these characters and to see Cam and West come together was truly inspiring. This book just had me on a roller coaster ride with my emotions. I absolutely loved it I can’t wait to see what comes next for this series.
I love West and Cam’s story. They have both been through so much pain and anguish and they struggle to make their relationship come together.
I need to hear more about Royce!
Good story but just too much computer stuff for me. I liked Cams relationship with her boss and I suspect we will learn more about Royce. I like the premise of beautifully broken people finding their way. Cams physical disability plus dealing with her past, West emotional distance made for a good story. Better than the insta love, two perfectly beautiful people. Bonus is west’s love of coffee. Nice quirk.
Cam and West meet on a forum for military vets and began to game together, teasing each other, and basically getting to know one another.
When West asks her to meet him for coffee, she agrees despite her misgivings and then freaks completely out and makes a mess of the whole thing. West isn’t sure what’s going on or what he said or did to cause her to run.
Cam is a strong independent heroine, she has survived a lot and suffered through more. Her past has left her broken both physically and emotionally and she refuses to depend on anyone. That attitude eventually causes fissures in every one of her relationships.
West has his own nightmares even as his current situation is making it impossible to fulfill his dreams. With financial issues at the core of his problems, he looks for alternative methods of easing the burden. When one of his decisions lands him in a firefight, he realizes he may never see the woman he loves again.
While this is definitely a romance, it’s also filled with all kinds of angst that Cam and West both must deal with separately in their lives. There isn’t a lot of Cam and West time as we see them both struggling to fix the problems they face. West’s was pretty straight forward but Cam’s included a much trickier problem and one that landed us with a bit of a twist.
I had a hard time connecting with these characters as a couple due to too little time actually getting to see them together. I loved what I saw of West and would’ve been ecstatic if the problem Cam was facing would have allowed him and his friend Ryker to step in and assist with bringing down the bad guys. Unfortunately, this felt like two stories. Cam’s definitely took over the bulk of the book with her relationships with both her best friend as well as the man that once saved her life.
Despite that, this is very well written with a fast pace and excellent secondary characters that were well developed. There was so much potential for it to really take off but it seemed to bog down around Cam’s job and her other issues. Perhaps I was expecting something different as this was my first book by this author. However, it really shines when it comes to the military angle, PTSD, some veteran issues, and running code for security software. I’ve heard great things about some of the other books in this series and I do intend to move forward.
This is the first time in reading this author with the books themselves being the tempter that I gave into. Yeah I also started from the beginning in this series with the others in my sights. Camilla is one fascinating character that draws you in with her right away. West is the one who will get behind the facade to where this will seal it when it comes to this story keeping you hostage. They also have some danger and adventure to keep you running along side. You will get to see several facets in this on what love can accomplish when it starts. Raced right through so I could get to the next one.
I loved this first book in the series, Breaking His Code: Away From Keyboard Book #1. I liked that the leads both had to learn to trust in order to make a relationship work. Usually we read about how one person needs to work twice as hard as the other to make a relationship work but when they both need to work equally as hard it works for me.
For Cam trusting is something she doesn’t do with anyone, since her family kicked her out especially after she was blown up while in the military, everyone shares with her but she shares with no one until Sampson West. Gamers make such strange bedfellows. Women game just as much as men, it’s just not something we see everyday and Cam AKA Camilla Delgado works had and plays hard. She also gives back to her fellow vets with chat rooms, forums, information, etc. I want to be like Cam when I grow up. She’s there for her fellow Vets with what ever information she an give them even if it’s just someone to talk to.
Both being Vets with PTSD is hard enough but add trust issues and it’s a rough relationship, but love always finds a way.
If you want a story that has you on the edge of your seat from the opening page – look no further. The story of Cam and West not only had intrigue and deception but it also had strong characters that the reader cannot help but fall in love with. Then the author throws in sub-characters that are so interesting that their story is needed ASAP – I am so glad i already have the next book in the series on my kindle. A job well done – Patricia Eddy – stand up and take a bow.
That’s a tough one to read through. Took me quite some time to read till the end – had it even put aside for several months. Cam and West are quite different but also a little equal. Lots of secrets from their individual pasts treat them every time to break up and apart. Lots of insecurities and the unknown of a future together rule the book.
I really liked reading West and Cam’s story. It was angsty and suspenseful! Great read!
Amazing and spectacular! A real page turner. Fell for the characters, the story was AMAZING. Another masterpiece from an amazing author.
