USA Today bestselling author Catherine Gayle presents the first novel in the Portland Storm hockey romance series.
Portland Storm captain Eric “Zee” Zellinger knows how to get the job done, but leading his once elite team to victory is fast becoming a losing battle. He can’t lose focus now—not with his career on the line. But when his best friend’s little sister makes him an offer he can’t … can’t refuse, Eric could lose the drive the team relies on from their captain.
Still in a downward spiral after a life-altering event in college, Dana Campbell is desperate to try anything to break away from the horror of that fateful night—even enlisting the help of the only man she trusts completely.
No matter how irresistible she is or how tempting the offer, Eric might not be able to cross that line—especially with the team’s chance at the playoffs on the line. Now, Eric has to take one last shot, but will he choose Dana’s Breakaway chance at happiness or the move that could secure his career?

This book is what got me addicted to hockey romance novels years ago! The story is moving and realistic, but also steamy enough. I picked it up over a weekend and couldn’t put it down until it was done and then I promptly ordered the rest of the series. Highly, highly recommend it!!
I read this 3 years ago. Having recently switched mostly to audiobooks and seeing this as part of a box set (Books 1, 2, 2.5, & 3) – it was a great deal to grab for a single credit on Audible.
This is a SLOOOOOOW burn in a lot of ways. Fundamentally, because Dana is trying to recover from a sexual assault that occurred when she was in …
It’s amazing at times what love can accomplish and overcome.
I really liked this story for many reasons. One being that the writing was well done. Another was that I love hockey and the story that surrounds it, I loved that they were not all champions and everyone came out on top. I loved the pace and the characters.
Now, what I do not understand is why the books are so cheap. The only negative thing I …
not new adult though…they are full grown adults living adult lives
I LOVE this book. It’s realistic.
After reading the series out of order and all over the place, I was quite excited to get to how it all started. I was not disappointed. This story could have been sappy sweet, but it had an edge, and a humanity to it that touched, rather than drowned, your heart
While our H was a little too sweet at times, he made up for it at others with his …
4.5
Eric and Dana. Wow…
Loved their chemistry and the build up that literally began on page one. Top read and thoroughly enjoyed.
(SLIGHT SPOILERS BELOW)
Dana went through horrible abuse that left her weak, and scared of any male contact, even from her father and brother. In attempt to try and ‘fix’ herself she follows the guide of her …
Really good story. You feel Dana’s suffering and the horror she would have experienced. Zee is patient and kind. So glad they found an HEA.
New author for me. Loved this story!
Catherine gayle never shies away from a sensitive topic and she does is intelligently, gently and with care. This book is a huge twist on the brothers best friends little sister trope.
Really great hockey romance- 4.5 stars
I grabbed this as a freebie since I like sports romances and love hockey, and hoped it snapped me out of my book funk. It was excellent. Not only does the author know and write well about hockey, but also the story is different and quickly hooked me. It’s a brother’s best friend romance, but much more than …
I stumbled on this book while searching for another Hockey romance series. I was intrigued by the synopsis (I always love a girl falls for the brother’s best friend story) but I had not read any of the author’s other books, so I was a little apprehensive. I was hooked within the first couple chapters. I really enjoyed Catherine’s writing style and …
Heard this one before? Girl has insecurity issues and asks trusted hot male friend to help her out and they fall in love in the process.
You’ve probably read it or seen it before but this is not that story. This is a torturously sweet story about the journey of a woman who was left emotionally scared and broken, but with the patient and loving …
I’m not even sure what I can say about “Breakaway” by Catherine Gayle. I’ve read thousands of romance books but I can’t remember the last time a book touched me in the way this book did.
When I first started reading, I had trouble picturing Dana in my head – I can usually visualize a character pretty quickly. But, it didn’t take long before I …
I wasn’t sure about this book since it deals with a rape victim but I thought it was handled well through out the story.
I really liked the story line and the characters. The biggest problem I had was that in order to read the complete story you have to read the next novel. The author leaves you hanging with questions unanswered.
Wonderful
i loved it
