Her head throbbed as she stumbled up the stairs. Music vibrating and the sound of partygoers fill her head as she walks into one of the dark, empty rooms. As she sits on the bed, she hears the unmistakable sound of the door locking behind her. She is not alone. The body of college student Chrissie Lowe lies curled into a ball – long red cuts along her arms suggesting how she had met her death. … met her death. Detective Jenna Alton is called in to investigate.
Purplish bruising on Chrissie’s upper arms and thighs make Jenna believe there is more to Chrissie’s death than others suspected, and she soon finds herself following the trail of the student’s last few moments, leading her to the scene of a party that had ended just hours before Chrissie’s body was found.
When Jenna hears reports that Chrissie was seen going into the bedroom of a college football star, she knows that finding out what went on behind that closed door could be the key to finding out how Chrissie ended up dead. But then another partygoer dies in an apparent accident at the campus gym just hours later, and Jenna is convinced the deaths are connected.
Facing a wall of silence from the student population, Jenna has to act fast to find the killer, but soon another student is found dead on the campus. As Jenna sends in one of her deputies undercover, she prays that she hasn’t just sealed his fate. Can she find the killer before any more lives are taken?

Chrissie Lowe, a freshman at college, is beyond excited when a senior, the captain of the football team, invites her to his house for a party he’s throwing.
Hours later she is found in her bathtub, arms sliced, and very dead. Bruising all over her body and examination by the Medical Examiner reveal assault by multiple men and her system filled with an assortment of drugs. At first look, her death is looked at as a suicide.
But then … various members of the football team are found dead. One looks like suicide …one looks like an accident. But is that what they are .. or is it homicide?
Detectives Kane and Alton, along with their other team members, face a wall of silence from most of the student population.
And then a third student is found dead.
This is a well written crime fiction with solid, unique characters. Although this is 7th in the series, this one is easily read as a stand alone. I highly recommend starting at the beginning…. how the main characters got to where they are is remarkable reading. The ending was spine chilling.
Many thanks to the author / Bookouture / Netgalley for the digital copy of this crime fiction. Read and reviewed voluntarily, opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.
This story keeps you going from the beginning to the very end. When Jenna and David return from vacation they are thrown into crime almost immediately. Jenna the sheriff becomes more frustrated with the case as she begins to find out about serial rapists happening at the college and the quarterback who is the ringleader and because of his cockiness it is difficult to pin the crimes on him. As that is going on some of the football players who were also involved are now happening to die or be killed it is difficult for the coroner to determine the cause of death, accident or murder. All of this keeps the story moving along and there are really no slow parts, if you think there are it is only describing a crime scene or at the office. Overall, I really enjoyed the book the characters and really would have wished to have found this author earlier to have read the books before this one. Will keep you turning the pages until the very end. I received this book from Netgalley.com I gave it 5 stars. Follow us at http://www.1rad-readerreviews.com (less)
The team of Jenna, Kane, Wolfe, and Rowley are back and solving crimes but they didn’t expect to be called out not once, not twice, but more for deaths at the university.
The first death of Chrissie is tragic, a bit shocking and relevant to campus life and the goings on one must be aware of. Drugged and raped by football players and sent back to campus where she committed suicide….or did she?
The attitude of the team of jocks was shocking to the least. And the reality that money talks and the power of money is really shown here, but the sheriff, Jenna, is different. She cares about the community and is not impressed by testosterone and wealth. She and Kane are quite the team and become invested in the outcome of these crimes.
Chrissie is one death but when some of the football players are killed, it becomes a case of who is seeking revenge? Her parents aren’t able and Chrissie’s sister isn’t capable. Her brother, Jack, was on a secret mission and is missing along with his team. Maybe her friend Phil who wanted more than friendship?
But then football players are attacked and it seems maybe a rival team or a member of the team that was let go is seeking payback?
Then there is the mysterious stranger watching everyone…who is he? And when they assign one of their own to.getting close to Lyons and the team, things ratchet up as his life and his friend Emily’s life are endangered. Emily is the eldest daughtet of their best at discovering what he can from the dead, Wolfe. Wolfe has two othet daughters and is at odds with the team using his assistant and his daughter. It becomes scary and the atmosphere has you looking over your shoulder. The intensity and concern for Jenna and her team becomes nerve wracking and meanwhile someone is setting up his own ending to the drama.
The series is terrifuc and even if this is your first book in the series, it can be enjoyed as a standalone mystery. Loved the ending. 4.5
We all cannot be wrong, if your not the Black Rock Falls Train with Kane and Alton, it’s not too late. I highly recommend you start with Book 1. Technically each book can be read as a stand alone, but you can watch the growth, the introduction of new characters, and the subtle build of relationships. Each book, this included is a true suspense, true thriller. All her books deal with real life atrocities that happen in our world today, bringing awareness to the reader from different point of views, with a light enough touch to not overwhelm, but can be triggers. This book deals with bullying and gang rape in college. The book is mainly told from Jenna’s point of view along with the killer. I say killer, and that in itself is a twist. In all honesty I figured out who it was and I am ambivalent with the ending. I understand, and it could have gone so many ways, you can’t please everyone. I absolutely love the title, it is well past time to Break the Silence. Book 8 please 🙂 Thank you D.K. Hood, Bookouture and NetGalley for the awesome opportunity to read this arc. I freely leave my thoughts and opinions and highly recommend this series to anyone who likes, suspense, thrillers and relatable characters you can grow and love.
