This is a quiet build, and fascinating look into the brain of a recovering gunshot victim. Most of the story centers around recovery, the challenges faced by brain injury, and only toward the end of the book is there any real attempt at find out “who-done-it.” The main character is fascinating, and despite her injury and challenges, I would have liked her to be less passive. Specifically at the end when the real would-be murderer is revealed, the resolution would have resonated more had she be instrumental in thwarting him (FIND the dang “call button” despite that left hand challenge, make THAT the pivotal personal triumph) rather than rescued by an accidental passerby. Despite this — the story kept me hooked, the characters believable, and I’d love to read others by this author.
Best Book Ever. The characters were wonderful, the story tense, the ending satisfying. This is the first book I’ve read by Freida McFadden, but I will be looking for more. I loved her voice. Could not put this book down.
I don’t know whether that counts as a review, but I don’t see any point in recounting a description of the story that you can get on the book page.
A cracking good read.
A compelling mystery to unravel whilst simultaneously giving one a superb and pretty unvarnished insight into someone suffering an acquired brain injury. It’s a story of resilience and friendship, rife with humour.
Terrific storytelling, found myself glued to the book to the very last page and then rather reluctant to let the story go.
I’ll certainly be reading more from this author, already purchased The Devil Wears Scrubs just waiting to open.
Hilarious description of her husband’s suggestion for this book’s plot and I’m frightfully glad that she ignored his “sage” advice.
I received an ARC of this book and unhesitatingly post a review.
I was very surprised I liked this book since I did NOT like the author’s first book. Charlotte should have died but somehow survived. The reader feels her struggles trying to salvage even a little of her life. Going through rehab with her was spot on. In addition, there is a mystery to solve… who did this to her. You decide on the perpetrator and two chapters further you change your mind. Very good read.
You will cheer for the right couple to have their happily ever after
This opened my eyes of people with brain damage. We don’t really know if they are hearing us and understanding but cant respond..
Pretty good. Keeps you guessing even though you’re pretty sure who did it!
Excellent read. I would love to read more books from this author.
Great read.
This is a wonderful intriguing read. An interesting perspective on what it is like to be the patient with brain damage, from the inside looking out. Wrapped nicely in a mystery. The story unfolds in the present but also in the past. A unique book that I continued to think about after I finished it.
Well-done suspense and romance. Good writer.
Really a great read! Different in that it’s from the point of view of the surviving victim and their recovery. The victim has to solve there own crime in dire health.
I truly lived this book. I would read it every night when I went to bed and found myself staying up way to late because I couldn’t put it down.
Tragic and entertaining at the same time. Speaks for the survivor determinina
tion that can keep us going forward after tragedy strikes.
Great read. Kept me guessing
“Brain Damage” written by Freida McFadden is a story told in first person . The main character , Charly is a woman who has suffered a gunshot wound to the head . The story alternates Charly’s life before and after the injury . Charly has a great sense of humor making me laugh out loud more than once . The other characters are realistic making you feel that you know them . If you have ever wondered what a person who survives a gunshot wound to the head experiences ; this book is informative . Who shot Charly ? I enjoyed every page getting there.
This book fascinated me because of the protagonist’s brain damage and eventual partial recovery. The other characters were less interesting. Her husband was not only unlikeable but menacing in a stereotypical way. Her friend Jamie was interesting but too likeable to be real.
I guess her struggles made the book fascinating, but other aspects of the plot were unrealistic.
Loved this book….don’t give up on this book…keep reading you won’t be sorry!
not my type of read. It was too strange, couldn’t stay interested.
Really good read! Interesting and believable
