Deep, interesting characters
Allison “Lex” Luther gets her first exposure to vampires when she comes across two of them trying to kidnap her niece. After the encounter, she finds out that she has magic and that her baby niece does too. Her niece’s powers makes her highly sought after by vampires as it allows them to walk in sunlight. Lex needs to learn how to use her own new powers so she can protect her niece.
I enjoyed the characters from this book as they all had depth to them. Boulder, Colorado also made a nice change of pace from the usual Urban Fantasy setting. Also, while the book covered some darker subjects like death magic, PTSD and kidnapping, the tone of the book leaned towards the lighter side and never became too bleak.
The only issue I had with the book as the tension at times was lacking. I have to believe that was from the author’s focus being on developing the characters and the world for the series vs. making the plot her priority. Now that the author has laid down a solid foundation of characters and world building, I look forward to seeing how the series progresses from here.
This was a well paced urban fantasy staring witches and vampires. A woman returns from military service to her hometown and family. She just seems to be treading water in her life. At the convenience store where she works she stumbles upon a man and woman who have just kidnapped her infant niece. She attempts to stop them, but is unsuccessful. She vows to find her niece no matter what. As the kidnapping investigation progresses she hooks-up with several vampires and witches. She also learns that she has some emerging special powers as well. With the help of her new found friends the case is resolved, but she finds herself now inextricably intertwined in the “old world” of witches and vampires. This was an easy read with interesting characters. It moved along at a good pace and a had a few twists and turns to hold my interest.
I absolutely love all of Melissa Olson series. If you want to out introduced into the world of urban paranormal fiction read these books. The characters come alive for you. You feel everything they are going thru. I am not one who gives out spoilers. Reading this authors books has opened me up to a whole new world of fantasy. Thank you Melissa for writing your wonderful novels. Keep them coming!!!
So this was really good. It was a Kindle Unlimited urban fantasy, so I was expecting it to be interesting but not polished. I was really impressed! This world has three “Old Races” running around next to humans: werewolves, vampires, and witches. Fairly standard rules to their behavior (I’ve never been a fan of people who let their vamps go out in the sun willy-nilly). Our main character is Lex, a former soldier who is trying to protect her dead twin’s daughter from being sucked into the magical Old World that want to exploit her gifts as a null (magic neutralizer – aka a logical reason for vamps to be able to walk in the sun). Lex discovers she is a border witch with an affinity for death. In order to protect her niece, she has to make a deal with the controlling powers in her region (a complex hierarchy of vampires). Her audition for protection is to join Quinn, a vampire enforcer, in tracking down the people responsible for her niece’s kidnapping. The book had some nice twists, several really well plotted conflicts, good world building, and plenty of room for mayhem. I will be looking forward to more from Melissa Olson!
I have never listened to Kate Rudd before but something about her voice allowed me to settle straight into the book. She pulled me straight into the story and I was easily able to tell who was who by just hearing them. Brilliant.
I loved this story and especially the characters. Watching Lex figure out what is going on around her and reacting to it had me sucked in and listening avidly. I was a little sad when it ended but then I realised that it’s the first of a series….can’t wait to listen to the next one!
Boundary Crossed by F. Olson and narrated by Kate Rudd is a fabulous witch and vampire story with a very unique story line! I had hooked right away as our gal is working in a store when two people come in to buy diaper but don’t know anything about it. When she goes over to help, she sees her niece in the stroller! They where kidnapping her. That’s when they kill our hero. But that doesn’t stop her. It is a great story with strange magic, action, and a touch of possible romance.
The narration was spot on!
This book was nice and refreshing. When I stated reading from the first word it had me hooked me I could not put it down. US Army Sergeant Allison “Lex” Luther could not get her life under control when she got out of the service because of losing all of her team and losing her sister after that and leaving a daughter and husband behind. Lex thought she had to take care of her niece after losing her. But now would be time to get the book to find out what happens. It is worth it to have this book and the next two.
I loved the first of this trilogy, but the other two–and particularly the third–were huge disappointments.
The start of the series. Love that we learn right along with Lex. No telling, just Story, with interesting characters.
