Welcome to Darmid, where magic is a sin, fairy tales are contraband, and the people live in fear of the Sorcerers on the other side of the mountains.
Rowan Greenwood has everything she’s supposed to want from life — a good family, a bright future, and a proposal from a handsome and wealthy magic hunter. She knows she should be content with what she has. If only she could banish the idea that … idea that there’s more to life than marriage and children, or let go of the fascination with magic she’s been forced to suppress since childhood.
When Rowan unknowingly saves the life of one of her people’s most feared enemies, that simple act of compassion rips her from her sheltered life and throws her into a world of magic that’s more beautiful, more seductive, and more dangerous than she ever could have imagined.
Rowan might get everything she ever dreamed of — that is, if the one thing she’s always wanted doesn’t kill her first.

At first I didn’t think I was going to like this book. I even thought I’ll read a little more and if I still can’t get into the story, I will just delete it. By midway through the book I was liking it and wanting to know what was going to happen next. By the end of the book, I really, really liked the story! I just purchased the second book in …
4.5 stars. This was an enjoyable read. The first half was very compelling—I had to keep reading to find out what happened next. Loved the plot and characters. Later the pacing slowed and focused more on the romance with the characters’ emotional and physical reactions to each other, and I was antsy to get back to the main plot threads. A …
It was an interesting idea behind the book and the writing was not bad. However, it takes more than that to make a compelling and heartwarming story. A story needs mystery, drama, chemistry and twists in the storyline to get the reader’s attention and love. This book fell short on all four points.
The storyline was dragged out and slowed paced. …
Interesting take on a world full of magic. Excited to continue the story and see what biases, misconceptions and judgments can be overcome in the series, as well as watch the characters grow in to their magic and power.
Definitely Teen Lit, but a good read despite. The author has some interesting ways of looking at the fantasy genre.
This was a fun story and I enjoyed several of the characters but I found some bits slow while other bits were too fast.
Great read
I really loved it and cant wait to read the next one.
I enjoyed this book enough to buy the sequel. The characters were believable and the romance was nice, built on friendship first, and not steamy, but it went forward and made you want to read more. Actually the story line was the best part even without the romance.
I very much enjoyed the only interplay between the main characters. The emotional development was most engaging. However, the end let me hanging, so I had to buy the next book.
It starts out slow and confusing but rapidly builds up to the point that you don’t want to put it down!
Loved the story and the characters. Read this book on vacation and had to buy the others.
I really liked this book and the characters. Unfortunately, not enough to pay for the rest of the series.
Couldn’t put it down!
This book was an eye opener to the plight of indentured servants, many who were trapped for years in a process that they couldn’t get out of even though they did not make the choice.
Fantasticlaly written and very well-researched–this novel of colonial America is outstanding!
The author displays her vast knowledge of early New England history through a captivating plot filled with fascinating characters. Terrific read.
I loved this book. I’m a big history buff and this book had a authentic feel so many historical books don’t. Very engaging read.
The reality of being indentured was interesting and well written but the characters were so annoying. The bad decisions and the miscommunication or lack of communication between the characters drove me crazy.
This was the second book in a series, however it could definitely stand alone. The first one was the Widow’s War. I highly recommend both, just got the third one. Can’t wait to read it. Good History,,, strong women
