An indentured servant finds herself bound by law, society, and her own heart in this novel set in colonial Cape Cod from the author of acclaimed The Widow’s War. Indentured servant Alice Cole barely remembers when she was not “bound”, first to the Morton family, then to their daughter Nabby—her companion since childhood—when she wed. But Nabby’s new marriage is not happy, and when Alice finds … not happy, and when Alice finds herself torn between her new master and her old friend, she runs away to Boston. There she meets a sympathetic widow named Lyddie Berry and her lawyer companion, Eben Freeman. Impulsively stowing away on their ship to Satucket on Cape Cod, Alice finds employment making cloth with Lyddie. Yet as Alice soon discovers, freedom—as well as gratitude, friendship, and trust—has a price far higher than she ever imagined.

This book was an eye opener to the plight of indentured servants, many who were trapped for years in a process that they couldn’t get out of even though they did not make the choice.
Fantasticlaly written and very well-researched–this novel of colonial America is outstanding!
The author displays her vast knowledge of early New England history through a captivating plot filled with fascinating characters. Terrific read.
I loved this book. I’m a big history buff and this book had a authentic feel so many historical books don’t. Very engaging read.
The reality of being indentured was interesting and well written but the characters were so annoying. The bad decisions and the miscommunication or lack of communication between the characters drove me crazy.
This was the second book in a series, however it could definitely stand alone. The first one was the Widow’s War. I highly recommend both, just got the third one. Can’t wait to read it. Good History,,, strong women
A very hard life for her
interesting story in an interesting time period. Characters well drawn and compelling
Educational and entertaining
I liked this book a lot. It was a good follow up to her other book “The
Widow s War” and very interesting as to the customs of that time.
So enjoyed this. Revolutionary time period. Great characters and vivid description. Storyline was very good and kept surprising me. Enjoyed.
interesting look into the world of indentured servitude. the colonial period is one of my favorite times to learn more about. the description of weaving, harvesting flax, and making yarn, i thought interesting. i enjoyed the lead female character and was empathetic to her situation esp in this time of “me too”.
Fiction based on fact, I love American history & this book is chuck full of learning. Time frame is pre-revalution era. It is part of a series but stands on its own.
A moving historical drama. Rich in little known history. Interesting reading.
Travel to a time and place you’ve probably never thought about. Inhabit the mind of a person you could never have been.
Although I only gave it 3 stars this was really quite a good book. I think my dilemma with the book was the sometimes long long long self reflections in the book. Dithering is not one of my favorite traits in characters. The protagonists ability to survive is not matched by her decision making or the authors writing of her thought process. . But then again it is the authors interpretation of her age. Well I would recommend reading this book.
Engaging historical fiction.
Bound is about an child indentured servant growing up. Very engrossing. I also read The Widows War by the same author, Sally Cabot Gunning. The Widows War is a well written historical novel seen from a woman’s point of view. Social conventions and lifestyle for the time period were accurate.
I loved this book!!! well written and interesting and a new spin on colonial historical fiction.
Interesting book abou indentured servants at the brink of the revolutionary war.
