Boss with benefits was a bad idea.
Getting pregnant by him…
Pure stupidity.
Cocky McCockerson was my first on a long list of firsts.
My first crush. My first lover. My first kiss.
When he left without a word he became… my first enemy.
12 years later he’s back from the military.
Armed with a panty dropping smile and enough swagger to charm the entire cheerleading squad.
And I’m the idiot … squad.
And I’m the idiot that agreed to let him stay at my house.
I was doing an excellent “ish” job of minding my business,
until I walked in on him in the shower.
We agreed. Just once.
Screw my broken heart. I can keep it casual.
His charm and big stick aren’t fooling anyone.
Just when my hatred was subsiding.
He secretly becomes my boss.
Guess I’ll hide this baby bump a little longer…

I love this author. She has a way of telling a story that makes the characters come to life. There was drama, conflict, pain, and love/hate, passion – all things that make a great story. It’s all about people changing and growing and loving again if they can.

The Twists and Turns of Love and Life
The Twists and Turns of Love and Life
When 18-year-old Mark Sampson left Brooklyn and his young lover Katie Marten, he thought just leaving was the best way to move on. When he left, he was headed down a path of juvenile delinquency, but joining the army and his subsequent tour of duty in Afghanistan changed the course of his life. He found purpose. After his enlistment was up, he settled in California, went to Stanford, and upon graduation, began to build a real estate empire of clubs in LA. Now, 10 years later he has returned to his roots in New York. And picking up the ties of the past is not as easy as he had thought, especially when he agrees to be the best man at his buddy Josh’s wedding to Cassidy, older sister of Kate, the high school sweetheart he left. And, he is also immediately thrown into the complication of shifting of his empire from the West Coast to the East Coast as he plots his transition by negotiating the acquisition of a local Brooklyn bar, Hey You!, the bar where Kate works. And, when Paul Getz, a rival from the past who had also pursued Kate and who had somehow followed the same professional path as Mark is interested in Hey You! and is intent on challenging Mark’s desire to buy the bar, things get very complicated. Everything seems to come back to Kate.
And, Katie Marten has a plan—not well publicized, but a plan. For the last 10 years she has lived in Brooklyn, working at Hey You! She has moved up through the ranks of jobs at the bar, gaining skills and knowledge, and now, while her title and pay is that of bar tenderer and wait staff, she basically runs the bar, and one day, she plans to own it. The current owner, Sean, a former drummer in an 80’s band, had used his royalties from the success of the group to buy the bar, but business and management of the bar is not his thing. He had been lucky that he had an employee like Kate to manage the books, the purchasing, and the employees. But unknown by Kate, he has had enough and has decided to sell out, and he is talking to a couple of guys, both of whom happen to be from the neighborhood. So, when Mark shows up for the wedding of her sister, Kate has to confront her past making its presence known in her present. And, when Kate, who is taking a long weekend away to Barcelona, Spain, is asked by her future brother-in-law, Josh to let his buddy and groomsman use her place while she is gone, she says “yes” assuming that she would not cross paths with Mark. But, Kate’s date of return is one day earlier than Mark’s date of departure, and the past becomes a very passionate part of her present when she finds him in her shower upon her arrival home.
Fate, friends, family, proximity and work seem to all align to throw Kate and Mark back into each other’s world. For Mark, that collision is karma—he never got over Kate, even though he was the one who walked silently away. For Kate, the flash from the past seems manageable—although her sister challenges the notion when Kate claims that Mark wasn’t that important in her world. But, ever since Mark, she has developed a relationship philosophy that included ‘never get too serious” with rules of “No dates, no texts, no nothing.” So, Kate is about to be thrown into the perfect storm of Mark, her job at Hey You!, and her sister’s impending wedding.
Aubrey Wright’s second chance at love story is a sweet moment of finding the missing pieces of life and of working to make those pieces fit in order to fashion a beautiful vision of what life could be with love and forgiveness instead of regretful shadows and thoughts of what might have been. Wright’s focus is always on the possibilities of love. With a knack for taking the unlikely and making it not only likely, but amusing, touching, and romantic, Wright always concludes in a HEA ending. Wright’s romances touch the heart and tickle the funny bone, leaving the reader with complete satisfaction.

This is a beautiful second chance love story that had you desperately wanting a happy ever after for Mark & Katie but there was more than pride getting keeping them apart. After Mark left Katie 10yrs ago without a word she was devestated as she was so in love with him & it made her never want to love again so she would never get her heartbroken but when Mark turned up at the bar she worked in she was shocked but was expecting to see him as he was best man at her sisters wedding him being the grooms best friend & had known each other since kids, Cassie & Josh knew how the two felt about each other & about what had happened to her after he left. Katie hated Mark but there was still that sexual chemistry there & eventually they give in one night saying it would be a one off time & then she found out that he had bought the bar she ran which annoyed her as she had wanted to manage & maybe own it herself one day. They tried to stay away from each other but sometimes they couldn’t stop themselves, he told Katie about the letter he sent after he left telling her he loved her but as she never got it she didn’t believe him thinking he was lieing but she wouldn’t tell him say what the letter said. Whilst they were in Mia I fir the wedding she found out she was pregnant & didn’t want to tell him fearing he would leave again but when she told him he was shocked but happy they didn’t tell each other how they felt about each other especially as he was her boss now. However, Paul someone they knew 10yrs ago who took a fancy to Katie then & wouldn’t leave her alone was now one of Mark’s business rivals one being the bar Katie worked Paul wanted to buy it himself but the owner sold it to Mark which angered Paul, so when Paul found out after stalking her at the wedding that she was pregnant he threatened to tell everyone & ruin her sister’s wedding but also Mark’s name in business telling them how he had got one of his staff pregnant & he also sent an email to Mark anonymous of course saying the same unless they both agreed to stay away from each other. However his blackmail failed as all it did was make Mark & Cassie to tell each other that they loved each other & had never stopped. They got their happy ever after she also found out there was a letter & why she never got it, Paul was kicked out of the business world & was running some small time office. This story had so much going on there were tears, hurt, lies, sexual chemistry, laughter & lots of love leaving you with a smile on your face.

Kate and Mark’s story started at highschool and ended abrupt. He left without a word.
Years later they meet again. Both affected by their earlier story together. Both afraid of feeling again. Keep it simple!
It was a really good second chance story with likeable characters – except Paul. A well written story.
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book
This series is fantastic so far. If you haven’t read Josh and Cassidy’s story, don’t hesitate to do so. Anyways, Katie is Cass’s little sister who happens to be a bartender at a NY bar. One night Josh and Cass meet up with Mark at the same establishment. Unbeknownst to the other three, Mark is thinking about buying the bar to add to his portfolio. Katie sees Mark and is completely annoying and rude with him. Well, they have history and it’s immediately clear things didn’t end up well for them. Flash forward ten years, and the couples are getting ready for Josh and Cassidy’s wedding.
There is drama, miscommunication, blackmail, intrigue and anything else you can think about. I really loved this story except for the times you just want to throttle Katie because she’s so damn stubborn. I understand she’s hurting, but damn give a break girl. Everything eventually works out.
If you can get past Katie at times, the story is fantastic! You’ll understand why Katie can be “emotional” towards the end. You’ve got to read it to find out.

This review is not going to be long. I am not a huge fan of a review rehashing the entire plot and spoiling it for everyone.
I liked the first few books that Aubrey Wright wrote. But this book I thoroughly enjoyed. Her style of writing keeps evolving. I cannot wait to read more of her books.
I received an ARC of this book to read through Booksprout in exchange for a fair review. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Interesting, intriguing, romantic, second chance at romance all help to make this a good book. The characters had chemistry while in high school.mark left Kate broken hearted but he also broke his own heart. Kate becomes a player in order to protect herself. Mark becomes a millionaire. Years later, their paths cross again. Will this become their second chance at love or is history going to repeat itself? Good book. The characters are relatable, well written and developed. Both characters are stubborn and keeps you on the edge of your seat trying to figure out what happens next.
