Highly recommend to readers of mystery and/or romance.
This is a cracking read. An exciting story, believable characters to care about, plenty of suspense and tension and well written. What more could a reader ask for?
The night Lily’s sister disappeared was the night her heart was broken and she wasn’t entirely honest with the investigating sheriff. Seven years later remains are discovered which may be those of Iris, her missing sister. Their mother always believed her daughter was alive but she is dealing with cancer. It falls to Lily to return to the one place she never wanted to see again to oversee developments.
There are lots of twists and surprises along the way as the reader, alongside Lily, learns exactly what did happen that night up on the ridge. Without giving any spoilers I can say everything wasn’t quite the way it seemed.
Loved it!
The story starts out with the protagonist Lily Logan being questioned by a sheriff. There’s been an earthquake, the earth shifted, and now her sister, Iris, is missing. Her mother Ava Logan wants the interview to end so she can have a drink. They are at their desert getaway. There is mention that Lily is the good sister and Iris the bad one. There’s mention of Lily’s boyfriend Alex and that her father died 3 years earlier. The characters are introduced as is the geography, the desert town with an earthquake fault line. The story setup is intriguing, the writing tight and compelling, and the dialogue authentic and crisp. As the story progresses the reader learns that Iris has been missing for 7 years. And Lily, now twenty-five, is going to do what she never wanted to do, return to Borrego Moon. At this stage I don’t know why she doesn’t want to return. But as the story progresses all the pieces fall into place. The way the storyline comes together with reflecting back to what has changed keeps the intrigue heightened. Lilly has inherited Borrego Moon ranch, where she is to return to help ID remains that have been discovered. Are they Iris’s or someone else’s? Her mother now in stage 4 cancer asks her to go. Her mother’s BFF Roxanne enforces Ava Logan’s wishes in such a great way; she a psychic. Two other characters that enter the story are Pom Pom Ava’s dog and Miss Fit. If you don’t fall in love with the names you will certainly fall in love with the dogs, adorably and perfectly cast. Antics and all. When Lily arrives with her dog, the first person she runs into is her ex-boyfriend, Alex. Now divorced and with a child. The love they left behind was no fault of their own. As we learn about what is causing tension between them the sparks heat up. This author shines with descriptions of the emotional impact each has on the other, with descriptions and detail to food, to digging into a mine, to so many marvelous detail that the reader feels like she/he is watching a movie. I love this author’s writing, storytelling, and attention to detail and will surely look for more from her.
I’ve read a couple of Kat Drennan’s books, and this one so far is my favorite. This one has three elements I absolute love: Romance, mystery and suspense. The inter-play of the main characters, Lily and Alex, while living with the biggest secret was played. I especially like the variety of Mexican dishes the author peppered throughout the story. This added to the authenticity of the setting.
An absolute page turner. I loved this book and would give mroe than 5 stars if I could. There is nothing to not like about it. It’s well written with great style. Loved all the descriptive scenes that had me feeling the grit and dust of the place. And the romance was off the scale for edge of your seat emotional and sexual tension. The characters felt real, their situation real too. The thriller/mystery side of the book hooked me within the first page and never let up until the end. I can’t wait for more of this series. Highly recommed!
Romance, Danger, Suspense…everything needed for a great book!
