New York Times bestselling author Lara Adrian introduces the first novel in a thrilling new vampire romance series set in the darkly seductive Midnight Breed paranormal story world. As a former assassin in the Hunter program, Asher is one of a small group of Gen One Breed vampires who survived the horrors of a madman’s laboratory and the cruelty of the training that made him one of the most lethal … most lethal beings in existence. Now, twenty years after his escape from those hellish origins, Asher is a loner whose heart is as cold as his skills are merciless. But when he thwarts a killing under way in the middle of the desert outside Las Vegas, Asher meets a beautiful woman who draws him into a deadly game against powerful enemies—one that will test both his skills and his tarnished honor.
Naomi Fallon is used to getting out of dicey situations. Orphaned as a child after her mother’s murder, she didn’t survive twenty-six years on the street without using up most of her nine lives. But when her latest caper lands her in the Mojave against a Vegas gangster’s henchmen, she’s certain her number is up. Then he appears—immense, brutal, and far from human. Naomi’s never needed anyone’s help, least of all one of the Breed. But after one risk too many, only a man with Asher’s skills can keep her safe. Yet the solitary, seductively handsome vampire has enemies of his own, and a secret that will not only shatter her faith in him but her heart, proving what she’s feared all along—that trust is only an illusion and love may be the sharpest weapon of all.

What a nice start to this spin off series by Lara Adrian. Born of Darkness is a mix of Vegas gangsters and revenge.
We find out about one of the most feared of Drago’s Assassins, Asher. It’s been 20 years since his escape from a hellish upbringing. He lives a solitary existence in the middle of the desert. He’s haunted by what he was forced to do and sees himself as irredeemable, a monster.
Naomi lost her family as a child and has made her own family by helping and protecting children who have been abused, lost, or on their own. She does whatever it takes to survive, but her latest scheme results in her life being in danger.
Life changes for both of these two when Asher rescues Naomi and releases she’s a rare Breedmate. Both are strong characters who refuse to back down which leads to fireworks.
Hunter Legacy is a spin off of Lara Adrian Midnight Breed series. I don’t feel you have to read one to start the other. I started the Midnight Breed pre-blogging, but never finished. I just got side tricked.
Narration: Roger Wayne is a new to me narrator. I liked his pacing and wide range of voices. I felt he captured Asher and Naomi’s quirks and personalities well. The only issue I had was Naomi’s voice. It got on my nervous and took away a bit of my enjoyment, but still it was an enjoyable listen.
Born of Darkness gives us suspense, romance, and sizzling Vampires. Your heartstrings will be tugged.
Rated: 3 Stars
What a awesome start to this new spin off series by lara adrian!! In this first hunter series read we find out about one of the most feared of drago’s assassins Asher. When asher saves Naomi from a certain death from some thugs out in the desert the gen one breed will meet his match! Naomi has lived by her wits and her need for vengeance and no one will stand in her way not even a hot sexy vamp with a body full of beautiful dermalyphs and smelling and looking like sex on a stick!! Love me some breed vamps!! Can’t wait to see more in this series!!! Theirs a certain gen one hunter named Cain who got my attention too!!
Born of Darkness is the first book in Lara Adrian’s new series the Hunter Legacy and most definitely a great beginning to this series.
Asher is one of the Gen One Breed vampires who used to be part of the Hunter program but since escaping twenty years ago he has lived peacefully on a small ranch outside of Las Vegas until one night he stumbles upon a young woman nearly being killed by a local gangster’s henchmen that draws him into a deadly game with powerful new enemies and possibly ones from is past also.
Asher knows that with his skills he can protect Naomi from any kind of enemy, but will her finding out about his past shatter any chance at love they have?
I’m definitely looking forward to reading more books in this great series!
I was given an ARC from the author/publisher. All conclusions are mine and mine alone.
OMG!! If you think the Mojave Desert was hot before, wait until you read Born of Darkness. It is SCORCHING now!!!! What a thriller–so much excitement!. There is such a beautiful love story weaved within the pages that I couldn’t help but hope for a wonderful ending. And the sexual tension burned up the pages.
Asher is a Gen One living in the Desert miles away from civilization. He avoids the world only venturing out for feed for his animals. Everything changes when he stops for a fancy car parked on the side of the road. Screams in the distance have him running to the rescue, but for whom??
Naomi wants revenge. She has a been slowly whittling away at Slater’s casino empire. She thought she was in the clear. She didn’t believe they would catch on to what she was doing. She couldn’t be more wrong.
Naomi doesn’t want to give up even after the warnings from Asher. When her world totally collapses she has a decision to make, but will it be the right one? There was so much suspense I was glued to the pages. There were so many obstacles keeping the story interesting and exciting. It just built and built until it exploded. Where is my popcorn? nibble nibble Holy Scorched pages tossed the popcorn in the air.
I confess it’s several years since I read the Breed series so I’m happy to finally start this spin off series. Asher was a assassin known as a hunter for the late and definitely not lamented Dragos. Now he’s living a quiet life on a ranch outside Vegas when he stumbles across three men clearly about to execute a young boy.
Naomi has a unique way around machinery and that’s enabled her to twist some of the gaming machines in a casino owned by the man she believes had her mother murdered. She hadn’t expected to get caught so easily and yep now she’s in big trouble. Luckily one of the infamous Breed shows up and saves her but when he notices her birth mark everything changes.
Ok I’ve always loved the Breed stories but this felt like a much quicker read than I remembered and its not even a novella ! Still I did enjoy it although the love was a little quick for me although I cannot fault the newer, more free Breed because it’s allowing the author to go in whole new directions.
5 stars
Asher is a vampire, created in a lab to be an assassin. He escaped twenty years ago and lives in the desert alone. On the way home one night, he comes across three men about to kill someone. When he intervenes, he finds the small person to not be a child but a beautiful woman. He takes her home and when she gets cleaned up, he sees the birthmark that makes her a Breedmate. Naomi is a small woman determined to take down the owner of a casino. She lived on the streets along with her best friend. They now run a house for homeless kids where they can come to get out of the weather, eat, and sleep safely. When the casino owner learns its her stealing from him, he wants her dead. Asher promises to keep her safe but can he keep his heart safe?
Awesome story with action, sex, and vampires. Loved the characters. Asher is handsome and strong, Naomi is beautiful, independent, and has a loving heart.
This is a great start to a new series. The Hunter’s have a horrible history but they are not evil . Asher finds Naomi when she needs a hero and he quickly finds he can’t live without her. Naomi starts out scared of Asher but she very quickly realises there is more to him that she first thought and even after she finds out about his past she still falls for him. I look forward to more of this series. I love this author.
3 stars- I liked it
Asher, a former assassin in the Hunter program, is a loner who has spent the last 20 years living in the desert outside of Las Vegas. When he thwarts a killing in the middle of the desert he meets a beautiful Breedmate who draws him into her war with a Vegas kingpin.
This was a great start to a spin-off series. While Asher may be free of the chains that bound him in his youth he still doesn’t actually live his life. He hides away in the desert and doesn’t interact with others. Meeting Naomi shows him how lonely and isolated his life has become. She shows him how to live and love. As with most Breed males, Asher was a protective alpha male who struggles with his feelings. His past as a Hunter was heartbreaking and made worse by his Breed ability.
Naomi was an extremely smart and compassionate woman. Her quest for vengeance against a casino owner was understandable but it overrides her clear thinking as well. I adored her dedication to helping homeless kids and running a shelter with her friend Michael. While I did think she should have known that her vengeance would have extreme consequences, it was still heartbreaking that it did. I liked Naomi overall, especially since she brought love and life to a man who thought he couldn’t have either.
Overall, this was a good couple and a good start to a spin-off series. I can’t wait to see what happens in the next book, which I hope is Cain’s.
ANOTHER WINNER IN THE WHOLE SERIES! She is an Amazing writer that only writes exciting page turners!
Loved it!!! I have been remiss in getting back to reading the Breed series by Adrian but this book did not miss a beat. We have Asher, a Gen One Breed male who is quiet and reserved and he has his reasons for that. Then we have Naomi who is a special person in her own right and is set out to right the wrongs done to her and her family. The two meet and the chemistry is off the rocks, filled with action, suspense and most importantly true mated love, this story did not disappoint. I am especially intrigued by Cain, who we meet in this story and cannot wait to read about him next. 4.5 stars!!!!
Quick get away. Fast read, absorbing.
I don’t know where to start here. I guess I should say first, it was an entertaining book. Nice sexy scenes between Asher and Naomi. It was edited well.
But I was hugely disappointed. I’m a romance reader. I read pretty much any kind of romance but paranormal romance is a favorite. It was the subgenre that lead me to read romance at all. To this day, I love me a good vampire romance and Lara Adrian’s Midnight Breed series was one of my first and favorites. I loved nearly the entire series, until after the revelation and the kids started having romances, but it was still good.
This spinoff is like a fan fiction set in the Midnight Breed universe. In fact, I am pretty sure that the story could have been contemporary romance or romantic suspense if you just changed the main characters. The casino plot line was weak. And the romance was way too sudden and rushed. I didn’t feel it at all.
After Cain’s visit to Asher, I kind of think he’s a bit stupid. I mean, hello? Sure let’s go see Michael for such a flimsy reason and put everyone in danger after Cain FOUND you. Uh, duh? Yes, Naomi was lacking intelligence there too but she didn’t have a big warning ahead of time. And as the girl was safely with her roommate, there wasn’t any emergency need to go like Tyler being left at the doctors office. The whole plot was very predictable because of this. You knew exactly what was going to happen. Naomi was fearing a freaking car accident? Really? Was she high? He just helped rob a dangerous casino mobster type person and you seriously are only worried and thinking car accident?!!!
I could go on about how less than brilliant these two were regarding the danger they were in. Just saying, Tyler needed help yes, go get him, but sure go home alone with a kid after nearly being killed a couple days ago by the people of the guy you just robbed! Again! When your roomie is missing. And of course, walk right into the casino to cave into his threats. Uh, yeah. Because he’s totally going to let you go. But sure Cain had to warn her…
Other than some blood drinking and a breedmate talent, this book wasn’t paranormal romance and had no actual bigger plot. I almost didn’t care how the book ended, I was that devastated. It doesn’t even seem to be written by the same author as the first Midnight Breed novels.
I sincerely hope that the next book makes up for this one.
I love this book and this author…what can I say? She is fantastic with plotting and Born of Darkness is no exception! I absolutely love this book. It’s a keeper for sure!!
Not as suspenseful as her other books but entertaining.
Lara Adrian’s Midnight Breed series is my all time favorite paranormal romance series, so when I found out she was writing a spinoff series I was more than a little excited. This series takes place approximately 20 years after the original series. I will make note that you can most definitely read this without having reading the Midnight Breed series. However, for anyone who has, we do get to revisit with previously loved characters (and it’s amazing so you probably want to pick it up for that reason alone!).
Asher is one of Gen Ones who were created, imprissioned and used against their wills by the insane Dragos. His past is full of memories and demons he’d rather forget. He lives a solitary life away from most of society on a farm, only venturing into town for supplies. When he happens upon Naomi and saves her from attackers set on killing her, he’s ready to be gone just as quickly as he appears. That is until he discovers Naomi is a Breedmate. He abs the Order are sworn to protect Breedmate at all costs, so he’ll need to babysit her until the Order can send someone to get her. Not that Naomi plans to just sit around and make that task easy.
Naomi is a woman on a mission. She has revenge to serve up and she wants nothing to do with a Breed Vampire, though she can appreciate her plans have left her with no one els3 to turn to. He may be the only one who can keep her safe long enough to do what she must, but can she trust him? With both keeping secrets and running from the monsters of their pasts, they may be perfect for each other, if only they can trust each other long enough to realize that and seal their bond.
This book was so enjoyable. I love that we get new characters and adventures in the Midnight Breed world while also reuniting with past favorites. This had the same kind of action that the original series did so well along with intriguing characters and a stellar romance. I cannot wait for more books in this series!
“On your back, vampire. It’s my turn to torture you.”
Paranormal Romance was how I actually got introduced to the romance genre and at first it was my absolute favorite, but in the recent years I found myself shying away from it. I’m not sure if it was the lack of great material out there or what, but Contemporary Romance ended up taking over my life and PNR got pushed to the wayside and when I think hard on that, it’s incredibly sad. If there is one author who could pull me out of a PNR funk it would be Lara Adrian! She was my favorite back then, and she’s still a favorite of mine now. When I saw that she was doing a series spin-off of her INCREDIBLE Midnight Breed Series, I about FREAKED the freak out! That was AMAZING news because that series will go down as one of my all time favorites in the PNR world.
BORN OF DARKNESS, book one in Adrian’s NEW Hunter Legacy series brings us Asher and Naomi, two unforgettable characters with heavy demons in their past…and present. Their connection is immediate even though they don’t know what to make of one another. They have their preconceived notions, but those end up going to hell the minute they touch. Their journey was so entertaining, so sexy, and so hauntingly beautiful, I couldn’t put it down. I don’t remember the last time I was so damn excited about a new series starting, and after devouring BORN OF DARKNESS, I just know that the PNR community is SO READY for this! Get ready to FALL IN LOVE with a different brand of vampire…get ready for the HUNTER LEGACY!

Knowing nothing good can he happening he ventures out to see what is going. Naomi knows her life is about over until this strange man walks in to save her. One look at Naomi and Asher knew he had to protect her finding out she was a breedmate he knew he had to contact the Order. Naomi has been trying to get back at Leo Slater for killing her mother. Now it looks like Slater is after her after her last antic at his casino. Now she has put her best friend Michael in harms way too. Can Asher keep Naomi safe and ignore the chemistry between them.
