Not nearly as good as The Magical Midlife series…not even close.
I love this book. A kickass heroine who doesn’t take any crap from anybody. This is the second time I’ve read it. I tried to find similar books for a couple years and never did. It’s the bomb!

My Rating:
I recommend you put Ms. Breene on your “To Read” list. I’ve read at least 10 of her books, many of them twice. I’ve not found one I would not recommend.
First, thanks Katie for Born In Fire. I haven’t laughed so hard since Don Quioxte in 2019.
Generally:
Our protagonist is Reagan. Reagan isn’t easy to like at first. She comes off a bit pretentious. No worries. I’ve learned to trust Ms. Breene.
Reagan is a bounty hunter in New Orleans. She was strutting down Bourbon Street in her black army boots, made for kicking in teeth, black leather pants with gun holstered on her leg, and a sword strapped to her back. A little girl broke away from her parents and ran towards her. She stopped to pick up a string of pink beads on the street. After picking them up she said to Reagan, “Pink’s my favorite color.”
Reagan stared back at her, struck mute. Then replied, “Mine too.” The little girl smiled and ran back toward her parents.
“So is mine?” She thought, “No way!”, but worse, “Why wasn’t that kid afraid of her?”
The next scene isn’t impressive when a reader ought to learn why the kid should be afraid of her. Maybe women in leather with guns and swords don’t seem all that odd to me? But Reagan grows on you. She is a supernatural bounty hunter.
I had the impression of a female “Dog The Bounty Hunter” vibe going on, but with less concern about fashion or appearance. But this girl, and… well… I’ll get to that later. I wasn’t buying it. I believe it was the audio.

First. I like Ms. Breene. I like her sense of humor and her affinity for swords. She writes strong women protagonists who face adversity straight up and struggle though even when they may need die trying. They’re real life type characters who are usually funny as well.
For me this demonstrates Ms. Breene understands the complexity of human relationships and isn’t afraid to expose the inconsistencies all humans have and hate about themselves.
So when she creates complex personal relationships among her characters, if you’ve ever done any honest introspection, it can be downright fun to laugh at the “you” that you see in her characters.
The Conclusion:
First, a sincere thank you to Katie. Love the little gift box things you and associates do. Thanks for the laughs, suspense, sexual, and otherwise. Specially for cutting open your veins and pouring scary parts of your soul into your work. That takes courage. I appreciate yours for risking it and getting paid off for the risk.
I was fortunate I have a version of the audiobook “Born in Fire” that contained the first chapter of the next book. When Born in Fire ended, I was not in the position to stop the audio, so heard the first part of the next book.
I’ll be reading the series whatever it’s called. I did find a blog that has a suggested reading order I may follow. It isn’t the published order which usually makes more sense to me, but that’s only because I’ve studied writing so intensively and know how the fifth book becomes the first book.
If I’ve neglected to mention it, Ms. Breene, your Finding Paradise series was absolutely my favorite of your books and I’ve read a lot of your books. Shanti books twice. I was so saddened to learn that Finding Paradise is now firmly in the rear view mirror.

I know longer support the ezines who suppress free speech but you can find K.F. Breen among some of those social media sites. She has some great Youtube videos that would be nice on Rumble or Bitchute as well!
I stumbled across this author while searching for something to read on KU. I wanted something supernatural and definitely romantic. When I started this book I immediately became hooked to the story and the characters. This series is interlocking and definitely needs to be read in order to get the most out of the series.
I love a badass strong female character and this book/ series has it in spades. And to love a strong woman takes an equally strong man to make such a dynamite romance. The characters are quirky and enjoyable. They don’t ‘act’ like typical characters and I absolutely fell in love with that.
If you are looking for a romance with witches, shifters, vampires, demons, and everything in between this series is perfect. Thankfully the whole lot is on KU so you can blast through them and fall in love with them like I have.
K. F. Breene is such a fun author!
I flew through the first three books of this series. It’s just the right amount of danger and humor and action.
Loved this! Such a fun read.
So, this is my first time reading K.F. Breene, and I am seriously trying to figure out what the H-E-Double-Hockeysticks (Haven’t heard that one in a while, have ya? LOL)…took me so long.
KF’s weaved a trilogy that has had me by the lady-balls. Reagan and her story of magic, monster-fighting and mysterious ancestry had me flipping pages and reading well into the night to find out what happens in this sharp-tongued protagonists’s world.
Funny, fun and action-packed, Born in Fire will give you a dry-witted heroine with bad-assery and an equally banter-loving, sexy vampire that will keep you devouring the pages and savoring every bite.
Demon Days and Vampire Nights is a book series that I can’t stop reading and wouldn’t want to.
awesome series, loved the humor and characters great fun…..
Though some would say the book is not the best work of K.F. Breene, I’d say it is the proof of her wonderful writing. She has a way of introducing the characters no one has and this first book of these serie is exactly this: learning about them, their aims, and their relationships. The originality of her stories is there and there is no need for cliffhanger to read the rest.
This book is lots of fun.
The heroine is smart, poor and hiding explosive magic secrets. She is sarcastic with a big dollop of humor; I laughed out loud a few times.
She gets mixed up with a sexy vampire, of course, and has to control herself from jumping his bones. I like that she ends up with friends at the end of the book. Nobody should be a monster living all alone.
Absolutely brilliant. KF Breene is top of the list as my favourite author. This paranormal story is full of action and drama, magic and the characters make me laugh out loud. The writing is outstanding and the worlds so believable and vivid you feel like you are in the thick of things.
Oh man oh man K.F. Breene is dominating my lists of ‘must-reads’ and ‘best reads’ again!
I absolutely LOVED this book. It’s part of a series though so make sure you get the whole box set, because even though THIS part of Reagan & Darius’ story has ended, it is not over, not by a longshot. 🙂
This book had me in stitches so many times I must ask the Author if she is a fan of Terry Pratchett`? I had this odd sense of Pratchettyness in this book – it was really fun and I loved it, there were many scenarios I felt resembled Pratchett’s writing style. It was awesome. In some ways, Reagan reminded me of Susan and Darius reminded me of DEATH many times haha.
Then we meet a married mage duo where the husband reminded me a lot of Rincewind and many situations reminded me of the Guards. hahaha
You will only get it if you read Pratchett, but I can’t help it – it had me in stitches and brought excellent content to the book this way. And no I’m not saying she has stolen anything from Pratchett it’s just that it was as if she herself has read his work and has done her own twist – it was brilliant.
I have noticed some stating that they didn’t like the “Romance” or that they didn’t understand it – and I would like to say that it’s because there practically isn’t any haha.
Basically what we have with Reagan and Darius is romantic tension, lust, and Darius talking dirty a few times because he’s got no filter (which was fantastic – the vamp is a breath of fresh air). And yes there was a couple of dry humps – but they were induced and influenced by more than what you would normally have – and Reagan is trying to keep her level head – he’s a vamp after all! haha
I loved the tension, it was humorous and sweet at the same time. It’s a slow-moving romance, the attraction is there – but it’s not a meet & rip type of thing. Normally I’m all for “meet me fuck me” types – but this slow-moving one was written really well and it’s made me just want to read the 2nd book, even more, to find out if they “finally do it” if you get what I mean. haha
This book had a very interesting world and Reagan’s secret is very very important. The book is well written, funny, stuffed full of LOL situations and I had no problems picturing the scenes.
I have read some other reviews mentioning that we don’t know much about what they look like (Darius and Reagan especially) – and that is true. We do know that Darius has dark hair and we know that he has honey coloured eyes with green specks and that they are beautiful. We know he’s a head taller than her – but we don’t know how tall she is. We know he’s very handsome, muscular, wide etc – but we also know that Vlad is more beautiful.
We don’t know much about Reagen though – this is true. We know she is very beautiful to others, but that she herself doesn’t really picture herself as something super special, at one point she’s very uncomfortable with beauty and beautiful things and almost pictures herself as dirty.
And all though I would appreciate more explanation about what they look like because I too like to picture it – this didn’t ruin the book for me or them. I find that by leaving some things up to interpretation I could make my own version of what they look like. And I liked that. 🙂 For all I know we find out more in book 2!
5-holding my side laughing-stars for this book!!
And maybe a new bookBF in Darius…..
I love strong female characters and K.F. Breene has given us one in Reagan, a supernatural bounty hunter who is trying to stay under the radar. Living in a supernatural world that tries to keep itself hidden while living in the mortal one, her job of hunting down mages and weres isn’t easy, but she makes it fun. Add to that, coming to the attention of an elder vampire who’s hot as a certain realm she’s trying to stay hidden from, her complicated life makes for fun reading.
Born in Fire is action packed and funny. The heroine Reagan is snarky and badass and a bit of a loner, but seems to find a surrogate family in the end. Darius is a vampire who teams up with Reagan for a case and he just has me baffled. He has his moments of humor and Reagan seems to bring out the more personable side of him, but I’m intrigued to find out more. I’m definitely going to continue the series to find out! **4.5 STARS**
I just loved this book so much. I couldn’t put it down then found myself super sad that I hadn’t read it slower to make it last longer. It is so funny! I just love me some witty banter and this book really rocked it. Is it too much to ask to be Reagan when I grow up?!
Loved loved loved
Intriguing plot, great characters and lots of action.
I rarely actually laugh out loud when reading…but there were moments in this book I had to mark my page to catch my breath. Interesting take on the genre, well thought out, with a host of supporting characters that you want to get to know and the little puzzles you love to figure out.
I love a sassy, funny heroine!
First book in a series. I’ve read them all. Enjoyable reads.
