Trevor Noah’s unlikely path from apartheid South Africa to the desk of The Daily Show began with a criminal act: his birth. Trevor was born to a white Swiss father and a black Xhosa mother at a time when such a union was punishable by five years in prison. Living proof of his parents’ indiscretion, Trevor was kept mostly indoors for the earliest years of his life, bound by the extreme and often absurd measures his mother took to hide him from a government that could, at any moment, steal him away. Finally liberated by the end of South Africa’s tyrannical white rule, Trevor and his mother set forth on a grand adventure, living openly and freely and embracing the opportunities won by a centuries-long struggle.
Born a Crime is the story of a mischievous young boy who grows into a restless young man as he struggles to find himself in a world where he was never supposed to exist. It is also the story of that young man’s relationship with his fearless, rebellious, and fervently religious mother—his teammate, a woman determined to save her son from the cycle of poverty, violence, and abuse that would ultimately threaten her own life.
The stories collected here are by turns hilarious, dramatic, and deeply affecting. Whether subsisting on caterpillars for dinner during hard times, being thrown from a moving car during an attempted kidnapping, or just trying to survive the life-and-death pitfalls of dating in high school, Trevor illuminates his curious world with an incisive wit and unflinching honesty. His stories weave together to form a moving and searingly funny portrait of a boy making his way through a damaged world in a dangerous time, armed only with a keen sense of humor and a mother’s unconventional, unconditional love.

Love the book. Love him.
WOW. I never would have guessed at what his childhood truly contained. It was both enormously educational, entertaining and gripping all at once. It gives you a window into his unique perspective on race and the issues that surround it. I was astounded and inspired and frankly it opened my mind to issues I had never considered to date. ABSOLUTELY worth the time to read it and then some.
I found Trevor Noah’s stories honest and powerful. I’m so glad he chose to share his story with the world.
One of the best books I have read in a while. Tears from crying and laughing. Loved it.
A great memoir of Trevor Noah before he became famous. I need to know how he came to the US and made it to the daily show.
This was not what I was expecting, it was much better. Noah manages to bringing to life the horrors of apartheid while celebrating the optimism and determination that his mother displayed throughout his childhood. He finds humor in the most dire situations. The book is both entertaining and eye opening.
Pretty good story. A bit all over the place in the telling- jumping back and forth through time and place in a way that is had to follow. Love the good attitude of the main character and his mother. Felt like you not only knew the mother personally but thought she was fantastic.
Buy this as an audio book – you need to hear it in his own voice! Plus, he speaks African languages and mimics people throughout. Wonderful story – wonderful guy!
Trevor Noah is an excellent write and his story is heartfelt, inspiring, and a total eye-opener regarding apartheid and what it really means. Should be in every HS social studies program. Quick read, funny and wonderful!
A must read.
I didn’t think I enjoyed memoirs until I read this book. If you’re not into memoirs, read this book. If you’re into memoirs, read this book.
I enjoyed this book so much I read it twice last year for two different books groups. BORN A CRIME was one of my top five reads for 2017.
