Kennedy
I stayed away.
I stayed away for years, even though it crushed me.
Because that’s what everyone said was best.
I distanced myself from the man I love.
I moved on, or so I told the world.
Went through the motions, and smiled when I wanted to cry.
But one look at the scars he hides so well, and everything crumbles.
Tragedy won’t leave either of us alone… not for long.
I can’t do it … either of us alone… not for long.
I can’t do it anymore.
I’m not strong enough to stay away.
Then chaos flashes into my life, destroying everything in its path.
It’s time to face facts.
I’m forced to accept the truth I’ve been railing against for so long.
Lincoln Hayes is the only one I trust.
The only one who keeps the nightmares at bay.
Linc
I love her. That’s never once been in question.
Thoughts of her came with every bullet that flew past my head overseas.
Every night, I dream about her and what we could have had.
She’s the only reason I came home.
The reason I stay, even though the very sight of her is torture.
I want her kiss. Crave her smile. Need her touch.
But after I watched my brother die in my arms, everything changed.
I may have survived, but I’m not the same man she knew.
I’m damaged. Broken.
Kennedy Townsend deserves so much more than I could ever be.
That doesn’t mean that I won’t watch her six.
Keep her safe, even from herself.
To do that, I just have to keep my distance.
Until she knocks on my door in the pouring rain.
Scared.
And every instinct I’ve got after years in the military comes roaring back.
Boots on the ground, active and ready.
I’ll take out any threat she faces.
Especially when she offers the second chance I want more than life itself.
There’s just one thing I haven’t taken into account.
The worst is yet to come, and I’m not strong enough to lose her again.

I enjoyed this book more than the first one and I think it was because of the interactions between Linc and Kennedy. Ugh this book was good and frustrating, but I enjoyed it immensely!

Kennedy has suffered lots of loss in her life…the death of her twin then her brother. While those losses hurt, that of her first love is the worse! The thing is, he’s around…but he ignores her. She tries to move on and even gets engaged to a prominent attorney but that relationship goes south. Now her abusive ex won’t leave her alone…will Linc finally open his eyes and admit that he can’t live without Kennedy? Another captivating book in the series. Lots of action and exes drama. Highly recommend this book.
Kennedy and Lincoln were in love until he left her without a warning. Kennedy has tried to move on with a guy that isn’t good for her. She still can’t get over Lincoln. Lincoln has trauma from the military and feels he can’t give Kennedy what she deserves in life. He is a hot cop but thinks too much. Kennedy and Lincoln belong together and nothing will keep them apart. A good read.

Linc and Kennedy have a past. After his brother dies while they are deployed he is broken and doesn’t want her to have to face his demons, but Kennedy has demons of her own. When she needs help he right there to watch her back. Can these two broken souls find healing together?
I am pretty new to April Canavan but am loving this series. Boots on the Ground will make you want to hug these 2 and tell them everything will work out. You will laugh and want to kill Royal. This one takes you for an emotional ride. Love that we get the entire group from the previous book too. Looking forward to reading the next in the series.
My heart was broken because I felt the characters struggles but I am a sucker for a second chance romance and that’s exactly what I get. The characters have amazing chemistry and I kept rooting for them to figure it out and make it work.
He will always watch over her to keep her safe and protected
Boots on the Ground is the second book in the Birch Police Department series and is about Kennedy Townsend and Lincoln “Linc” Hayes. After reading the first book, Balls to the Wall, and really enjoying it I had high hopes for the book….and they were met. The story will lay waste to your emotions in more ways that one as it takes you to the highest highs and then plunges your to the lowest depths of agony, fear and hatred only to then take a turn into scared and anger.
This book is well written, has a fast-paced, tight and very engaging story-line. The characters you just fall in love with, no other way to say it. The book can be read as a stand-alone but if you read Balls to the Wall first you get a better understanding of the characters and relationships. I can’t wait to read the next book in this series.
I received a copy of this book and am leaving my honest review. My opinions are all my own.
A beautiful story in which a lot happens but where you especially feel how deep the love of Linc and Kennedy is.
Linc lost his brother during the war and is still struggling with intense memories. Back home, his memories cause nightmares and feelings of not being good enough. He distances himself from anyone who means anything to him, including Kennedy, the love of his life. But in doing so, he drives her into the arms of another man who abuses her and nearly kills her.
Kennedy is a strong woman with a past that can make you crawl into your own shell. But she survives all this and is a support for the people around her. She finds her happiness in Linc when he finally realizes that he can’t live without her either.
Linc, a man who feels he has fallen short and could not save his brother when mortally wounded. Who finally comes to believe in his own worth and so passionately shows his love for Kennedy.
Strong ending in which Kennedy can fight her demons and fears

5+ on this one. This series just gets better and better. Linc and Kennedy’s story has it all. I could go on and describe what happened in this book, but my suggestion is READ it for yourself. You will not be disappointed! Can’t wait for the next book in this series

Another great story at the Birch Police department. Kennedy and Lincoln’s story was just as good as the one before. I loved all the drama and the happy ending. I can’t wait to see who finds love next at the station.

This story is fast paced, full of action, drama, suspense, mystery and intrigue.
Great characters and storyline.
I can’t wait to read the next book
This was an ARC through Hidden Gems and this is my honest review.
This book was way more intense than the last one. I am shook. I was not quite expecting so much ache.
Both Kennedy and Linc were struggling with trauma and trying to cope with their pasts. They danced around each other for a bit but it was only briefly and I have loved that about these books. I can only take so much of the back and forth.
Way more emotions with this book, I mean heavy deep rooted emotions. This book is going to be triggering for those set off by abuse. Some of the dialogue used towards victims will be upsetting. That being said this book keeps it real, be ready for that.
This book is a hard hitter with sorrow, hope, and redemption in equal measures. We’re only two books in and this series has been incredible. I’ve got to go back to the prior series and start front the beginning, I hadn’t realized I missed so many stories before these.
Well I have been waiting to read this story since I read the prequel in an anthology. Not going to lie here, since then I became a fan of Aprils and will be reading through her books soon. So there are some trigger warnings so read at your own risk. I want to say that if I could give more than five stars I sure as heck would. Lets meed Linc and Kennedy. These two grew up together since they were kids. Kennedy is younger and also Linc’s best friends little sister. Ohh I am liking where this is going right? Unfortunately Linc thinks he doesn’t deserve her. He has been struggling since he came back from the war. It is heartbreaking to read. Then you have Kennedy who seems to lost herself at a young age. She has issues that she needs to get through. Lets not forget about the crazy ex she has. Her ex has that mentality that if I can’t have you then no one can. Will Linc get out of his head and claim what is meant to be his? Will he step up and protect her? Will she finally break and make a move? We have a lot of intense moments. I mean I literally cried when I was reading. I went through a lot of emotions as well anxiety. Get ready to be gutted when you read this story. You will love it.
This book was absolutely amazing. Linc and Kennedy loved each before war. After war, and the death of his brother, Linc made the decision to push her away. Their story is captivating and the twists within the pages will break your heart at times. Worth reading and rereading.

I first encountered Kennedy and Linc in a prequel that was part of an anthology. I couldn’t wait to read the rest of their story! It was totally worth the wait!! Their story is SO GOOD!!! In love and ready for a future but a loss during a deployment changes Linc and makes him doubt he can give Kennedy what she needs in life. When a danger arises in her life, he realizes that life is too short to deny the love he feels for her. The danger will bring tears to your eyes!! She experienced so much trauma and it’s not over yet. This story is so good, so intense, includes some steam, and such a perfect ending for these two amazing characters. I can’t wait to see what comes next in this series. The other characters in this series are terrific to read about so I can’t wait to read each of their upcoming books.

Second chance put into action – finally!
Boots On The Ground (Birch Police Department Book 2) by April Canavan is a great former military, law enforcement, second chance romance. Linc and Kennedy knew they were meant to be together years ago. Deployment and tragedy, along with the resulting trauma, caused Linc to withdraw and reject Kennedy. In turn, Kennedy ends up in an abusive relationship, suffering trauma herself.
The plot of this book is so emotionally driven from both Linc and Kennedy’s perspectives, with their individual traumas at the forefront. While PTSD is a serious topic in normal times, it is even more timely at the moment. Current events of our world have created unprecedented traumatic situations for many. Trauma is all it’s forms is worthy of attention and I loved that it featured prominently here. I also appreciated Linc’s choice to work on getting better.
Overall, this book blends the emotional depth of characters with romance, suspense and danger to create a highly engaging and attention grabbing book including a long time coming, lighthearted and loving HEA.
I read an ARC of this book and voluntarily share my review.
WOW! So much emotion, so much love as Kennedy Townsend and Lincoln Hayes try to move on from a past that they can’t change. When Linc left for the military, he wanted Kennedy to wait for him, but what he saw during his deployment has changed him. He now wants someone better for her and he doesn’t believe that he is that man. Kennedy waited for Linc, for years, but he continued to push her away. She almost married another man, but was left hurt and broken. Linc knows the man she almost married hurt her, but she won’t speak about it. Kennedy comes from a law enforcement family and is a 911 dispatcher at the station where Linc is assigned. He is always watching out for her and as Nox says “he has her six”. A totally absorbing story as slowly Linc and Kennedy try to work things out while danger stalks her. I loved the close-knit family and the author’s creative (and humorous) writing that brings such authenticity to her characters (love of tacos; 4 bottles – lol). I am so looking forward to the next book in this amazing series! I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation for an honest review. (by paytonpuppy)
This is a well written roller coaster which is intense, heartwrenching, filled with danger, and off the chart’s chemistry, with witty banter, and was an entertaining read.

Linc and Kennedy are taken through an arduous path before they get their happy ever after. They both have issues that they need to address in order to find their way back together. I enjoy the journey of this couple, the support of loved ones who flesh out the story and all the emotions.
This is the 3rd book I’ve read written by April Canavan; I can’t wait to read more of her books.
This is the second book in the Birch Police Department Series; Kennedy & Linc both love each other but he won’t admit it and she stays away because that’s what he wanted. She pretends to go on with her life but after everything is destroyed in her life he’s the only one she trusts.

This book is an intense emotional roller coaster ride. Get ready to go through all the feels! I laughed, I cried, I cheered and cried some more. Lincoln and Kennedy’s journey is heartbreaking, traumatic, steamy, and absolutely beautiful. They have both been through a lot of trauma, but they are able to help put each other back together. I loved Kennedy!! She is a warrior who loves tacos and carries around a machete. I have been anxiously waiting for their story and it definitely did not disappoint. I loved it!! This book is amazing and I am looking forward to the next one!!
